12th - Experienced - 1.69

Highest Score: 5 - Herbs, Nina West

Lowest Score: 0 - Ghosty., GLOBALFUNQ, Hide&Seek, JSG, spiceboy

Ouch! 'Experienced' is solely an H vocals song, and is placed right in the middle of the album. This has to be the most bizarre song in Steps' back catalogue, a real outlier. Lyrically it's about a man losing his virginity to an older woman - presumably not a subject matter that H himself relates to! Was this track conceived purely to make H come across as being straight, so as not to put off female fans who fancied him? Oh, the 90s... :drama: Even if we overlook the cringeworthy lyrics, the tempo of this song really disturbs the flow of the album. This track is so notorious for all the wrong reasons within the fan base, that many of them simply and dismissively refer to it as "Track 7". Judging by the average score, I think many of us agree that this song should never have seen the light of day!!

11th - Too Weak to Resist - 3.46

Highest Score: 6 - Pippa, spiceboy

Lowest Scores: 0 - JSG | 1 - GLOBALFUNQ, Hide&Seek

In fact we were treated to two solo H numbers on 'Step One' and we mildly have more appreciation for this one. This song is essentially about cheating on your partner, but defending yourself by proclaiming that you're just a man and therefore felt "too weak to resist" cheating. Um... ok! 🚮 Could these bottom two songs be any less suited to Steps? I'd love to know what the band think of them.

No surprises so far. Definitely the weakest songs on the album, potentially in their whole Discography.

Not surprised at all, the weakest two songs out though.

Too Weak .to Resist more than doubled Experienced’s score. Though it really wasn’t hard to do that.

I think I've mentioned this is the Step On discussion thread a few months back but I would've swapped out Experienced and Too Weak To Resist for A Love To Last and Why?.

A Love To Last if I'm not mistaken is Claire & H, so H still gets some vocal time on the album.

Why?, again if I'm not mistaken this is a Faye heavy track which I feel would've been better than Words Of Wisdom.

Edited by PAJ

That would have been a better move as these songs aside it's a really strong album that I still really enjoy and still have a huge soft spot for the album.

Thanks for the replies so far! I'll have to listen to their B Sides again, in some cases it's been years since I heard them. I can imagine that they had B Sides more worthy of a place on Step One than the above two album tracks!

Any other responses will be appreciated  I'll post 10th and 9th soon. Any guesses which tracks they'll be?

I know what tenth & Ninth place is :kink: I do agree though, those two songs are definitely the worst in their back catalogue nevermind on that album. Atrocious. I love how they were fobbed off on H as well. Surely he knew they'd be missteps.

10th - Steptro - 4.08

Highest Score: 5 - Feel the Fever, Ghosty., GLOBALFUNQ, JSG, Nina West, PAJ, spiceboy

Lowest Scores: 1 - Hide&Seek

An intro has done better in this rate than two album tracks! A deserving outcome though. It's the only Steps album that uses an intro - entitled Steptro. The 56 second track gradually builds up until it climaxes with the group singing "this was the Last Thing on My Mind" - and then that track begins.

9th - Stay with Me - 6.35

Highest Score: 8 - ...ready for it, Spiceboy

Lowest Scores: 4 - Ghosty, JSG

From the intro, to the album's closing song! Stay with Me is a cover of an 80s ballad by Romeo's Daughter, originally called Stay with Me Tonight. The song and the album it came from weren't commercial successes, meaning that it was a relatively obscure song that many fans probably believed was an original song. Am I right in thinking that Lisa is on main vocal duties here? I think the song is fine, perfectly pleasant, but at the same time it's kind of a feeble way to end the album. Step One as an album really is a mixed bag!

The above video shows the Steptacular artwork, which was actually used as the American artwork for Step One - and rather curiously 'Stay with Me' is the only album track included on it (as track 6 of 11), with the other 10 songs all being singles! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Step_One#American_release

No shocks here. Stay With Me is nice. I think the four obvious ones are out now.
