I don't think I've ever been familiar with a Steps cover at the time of release (apart from that dreadful Dancing Queen)!

Thats a fair enough point, i know some fans as we seen here on the forum bought extra copies to help get the number 1, even without that though i still think they would have got close to 20k which will still be alot more than this weeks number 1.
It was the opposite for me i was very familiar with Better the devil you know (a Kylie classic and huge fave of mine), chain reaction, tragedy and last thing on my mind and from the newer songs The slightest touch.

I vaguely knew of Better the devil you know as a Kylie song but I didn’t really know who Kylie was in 1997/98. Otherwise I was pretty limited to Spice Girls music at that time 🤣. Step One was the third album I ever got.

Oh I agree they would have sold about 20k but the record company would prefer they were #2 with 25k sold as they get more money out of that… I bet the band would rather have been #1 though.

Do you know of Kylies original now? Its such a huge Kylie classic among fans. Was the spice girls the first album you bough as you mentioned step one been third.
Is it just Victorious, The Slightest Touch and A Million Years that are “covers” on this album?

Oh god yes I do, I'm a big Kylie fan and I've seen her in concert twice. I prefer her version to Steps lol.

1. Spice (1997) - I didn't get it until my birthday

2. Spiceworld (1997) - Christmas

3. Step One (1998) - I bought it out of my own pocket money which I'd saved up so first album I bought personally.

As much as i love Steps , if given the choice i would have said no to them covering Better the devil you know.

The first album i got which was a present was Kylies debut album, the first album i bought from my own money after saving for what felt like forever was Kylies second album enjoy yourself. With Steps, i was working by the time they came on the scene so buying albums wasn't an issue, however i remember really struggling to get my hands on the 5678 cd single. I live in a remote town in Ireland so the local shop only had a selection of singles but luckily when i was off work one weekend i travelled to a city about an hour and a half away to do some Christmas shopping and i finally got my hands on the 5678 cd single while there and i was very happy as it was out a few weeks at that point

I think Steps themselves really wanted that number 1 and will be slightly disappointed they lost out, to be fair though the manic street preachers but in a great battle and going by this weeks chart they have stayed well ahead of Steps which means the manics won the battle fair and square. Im just a little peed of that they didn't release on another week even this week when it so easily would have went to number 1. Steps with all 3 albums since the comeback all could have been number 1s if released on the right week, at least Tears on the Dancefloor was a midweek number 1 for almost half the week.

I believe so!

I really am in a minority as I love Steps version of Better The Devil…

I agree! Dare I say it but I prefer the steps version to Kylies. I think Kylies sounds flat in comparison.

Yaaaay welcome to the party of… 2 now!

Room for one more? 😎

The thing is, I heard and loved Steps’ version before I’d even heard of Kylie (I didn’t know her until Spinning Around!), and then it was a while longer until I heard her version, probably not until 2002 when I bought Greatest Hits 87-92).

I do love Kylie’s original, but it’s Steps’ version that I have a sentimental connection with. It kind of feels to me like Steps’ song purely because of hearing it first!

3 is the magic number!

I do I understand that if steps version was the version you knew first, for me it was the other way around and from loving the original from word go it wasnt a song I wanted Steps to cover. At the time I remember thinking kylie has some great album tracks that would have been ideal for Steps to cover as singles

Still midweek #15 today, glad to see it’s stable at the moment!
