20 years ago, Britney released her 3rd studio album... 'Britney'. This was the album that stripped away the cutesy, girl-next-door image and launched her FULL THROTTLE into a raunchier and sexier direction. Led by the ICONIC single 'I'm a Slave 4 U', Britney had everybody talking (again!) with this album.

Largely considered as her most underrated and under appreciated album, 'Britney' was another switch up in sound for her and really took her from superstar to mega star. I love this album so much, it gives me so much nostalgia and it always makes me happy whenever I listen to it.

I have such a soft spot for Anticipating, it is sooo cheesy but so good :P

20 years!!! Wowzers. This is probably one of her most underrated albums. I’m a slave 4 u and I’m not a girl, not yet a women were played so many times - definitely two of the songs I loved the most back then.

This album is so fckng underrated. Fact!

Let Me Be, Lonely and Cinderella are highlights❤️

I really wish the singles campaign had been different for this album, i.e no Boys or I Love Rock & Roll, replacing with Cinderella and Anticipating (or even Before The Goodbye)

I think the original plan of doing two albums (one for Crossroads [or, at least, an EP, depending of how many songs they wanted to use] and another for Britney) would have been the best in my opinion. "I Love Rock n' Roll" makes no sense in the self-titled album, while it works perfectly for the film, for example.

Also, it was a bold move to release "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet A Woman" and "Overprotected" after "I'm A Slave 4 U", lol! 😆 I'm aware that the album was, sort of, labelled as the transition of Britney from bumblegum pop to a mature image, but it would have worked better to split them or release both of them before, not in between.

I see what you mean but it would need a break between - it was weird that she promoting a new image as a grown up with Slave 4 U then being America's sweet angel in Crossroads.

Maybe yes, maybe no (re: "need a break [in] between").

I personally think that Britney's image began to change (or, let's say, transition) with the music videos of "Stronger" and, especially, "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know", so Jive should have hold the release of her self-titled album to 2002 and focus on Crossroads in 2001 with an EP in my opinion, including "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", "Overprotected" and "I Love Rock n' Roll". Depending of the success of any of them (minus the latter because of its inclusion in a key scene of the film), it could have been attached to the album.

However, if we're taking into consideration that Q4 was one of the strongest quarters of the year back then, I see why Jive wanted her album to release later that year and the film to be in-between.
