The change to introduce different paid/free ratios to the singles chart came a few years later - in July 2018, when video streams were counted for the first time. I think an OCC article at the time specifically stated that streams for the album chart weren't affected. But yes, it's by the by in terms of your overall point.

Does video streaming still not count towards the album chart then?

I do wonder if there’s a way of making streams only count towards the album if you’ve looked up the album in the first place. So you don’t have to listen to the whole album but you need to be streaming from within the album. Then the ratio could afford to be higher than 1,000th per track. It sounds tricky though.

Album sales are just in terminal decline tbh. I can't see how any change to streaming ratios is going to change that other than artificially.

Problem with implementing it is that it'll probably make an even bigger mess since most people probably don't actively seek out the most apropos album to stream tracks from. They'll just search it and add the first result that comes up no matter how random it is, either sticking with it forever (by adding it to their own personal playlist), or be subject to whatever fluctuations the algorithm decides for future listens. For instance, I just searched up "Lose Yourself" and the first result was neither Curtain Call nor the 8 Mile soundtrack, but the 2014 Shady Records compilation album, and I believe in the past it's also often come up with the "Just Lose It" single which in either case is just the same as not counting the song at all. Maybe to some this is a more just chart that puts cherry picking into perspective but I think it'd just make the chart impossible to interpret and meaningless (...more so).

Point I don't think anyone has made yet: I wonder if the Adele album would have got better streaming numbers on day one if she had dropped it without any single beforehand. The dropoff from absolutely record shattering first day streams from 'Easy On Me' to merely very good first day streams for the '30' album tracks is definitely unexpected, but notably the previous record holder for the biggest day 1 album bomb was Drake's album which dropped with no singles.
On that note, I wonder if Easy On Me would have been the leading track if she had just dropped the album with no lead single (imagining she didn't drop a video for it either). Or would one of the other tracks have connected more immediately with the audience?

I was thinking the opposite that because she's one of the few artists who does insane physicals, she might have been better leading up with 3-4 singles dropping separately then the album. I could have seen her get 1.5-2.0m for dropping a second single.

Im sure if she dropped an album a la Drake, all tracks would have been near 3 million on release day, like EOM did

and then drop during the week like EOM did

Don't think a longer campaign would have benefited album sales, maybe the opposite, people get tried

long pre-album campaign are only used by artists that cannot get hits and release 4/5 singles to see what sticks

on Amazon:

5 Mariah

7 Wham

15 Pogues

Adele's tracks dropping quite a bit, OMG is the highest album track at #20

and the lowest at #60

All Too Well sudden climb to #32!

George Ezra's Xmas Amazon song is up to #64!

Adele's tracks have actually stabilised quite well on Amazon, mostly only dropping a couple of places since yesterday or staying put, and 3 of them have gone back up. Not bad considering how many Christmas songs have surged since yesterday (11 in the top 50 now!)
Looks like it's been officially announced that I Drink Wine is no longer the 2nd single

Where is the announcement?

This is really good news if so!

On Spotify, Adele has the whole top 5, and 8 of the top 9. My Little Love rebounds to a new peak of #3.

#36 abcdefu

Christmas songs at #23, #28, #37, #43 & #50.

Quite shocked to see my little love go up to 3 tbh it hasn’t been performed or anything
my little love and i drink wine will probably fight it out for a charting position, i think I drink Wine will manage it though! I’m not so sure she will occupy the entire top 3 now but will see based upon today’s sales as shivers seems to be catching up
I hope it gets replaced by something else in time for Friday... I find the voicenotes a bit jarring
