Posted November 2, 20213 yr "I don’t think I’ve ever been in more pain in my life than I was making that record. It’s very hard for me to listen to. It’s very hard for me to sing those songs…because they came from a very, very black hole in my heart." Lady Gaga on “Chromatica” for British Vogue - I guess it explains the lack of live performances/promo for the era... Thoughts? (and please be sensitive - I can see where this thread ~could~ end up going..)
November 2, 20213 yr Author This breaks me to hear. The album that gave us so much escapism and light in such a dark year being borne out of such pain and darkness for her :( Thank you for the gift Gaga, it will continue to lighten our lives as we celebrate and dance through the darkness. I love her uncontrollably :(
November 2, 20213 yr Bless her! This indeed explains a lot, especially combined with the pandemic, and it makes total sense. I think overall it would be the best to end this era and start with something new. As much as I love the record, she shouldn't sing or promote this if it hurts so much and brings her back to a dark period.

She apparently confirms the tour is still going ahead in the same interview which surprises me somewhat. Maybe it'll be a Chromatica tour but largely focus on songs from other eras too? We shall see ~
November 2, 20213 yr Heartbreaking... but not hardly news in the sense that we can see there is something uncomfortable around that album as a whole. But I SO hope the tour will take place in some form. She seems to be happy now so I bet she is able to sing Free Woman at least in a medley. Edited November 2, 20213 yr by Sour Candy
November 2, 20213 yr I still don't understand what she means with a very black hole in her heart and why it's so hard for her to sing the songs on this album.
November 2, 20213 yr I still don't understand what she means with a very black hole in her heart and why it's so hard for her to sing the songs on this album. She starts the quote with "I don’t think I’ve ever been in more pain in my life than I was making that record", so I think that explains everything. Singing those songs probably remind her of the darkest times in her life and bring her back to those feelings.

November 2, 20213 yr Author Ok but where is the real reason? I don't want clues, I want to know the truth. I guess we don't always get what we want? That's also not how trauma works.. it doesn't have to be shared with anyone until the person that experienced it is ready to share it ~ Surely that is something you can understand?

You don't need to ask me if I got it because you know I got it. I'm not forcing her to tell me the real reason, but she talks about it in every interview she does so don't expect me not to be curious to know.
November 3, 20213 yr It's probably a combination of several reasons, the profound essence of "being Lady Gaga" until the end of time being one of them. And I'd guess the relationship with C. Carino wasn't healthy either. @1455608753219424256
November 3, 20213 yr Author You don't need to ask me if I got it because you know I got it. I'm not forcing her to tell me the real reason, but she talks about it in every interview she does so don't expect me not to be curious to know. The reason I asked if this is "something you can understand" is because in your previous post you literally said: I still don't understand what she means with a very black hole in her heart and why it's so hard for her to sing the songs on this album. Isn't it obvious that she has been through trauma throughout her life and and career - what more do you need to know. Do you need to know specific details of the trauma? Time, date, location, perpetrators et al? How morbid if that is the case! It's surely enough to get that she has had ups and downs and possibly depressive states (sometimes caused by shocking events, sometimes caused by... NOTHING AT ALL, just your mind entering dark places , we don't need to know why she feels low when she does so).

It's surely enough to get that she has had ups and downs and possibly depressive states (sometimes caused by shocking events, sometimes caused by... NOTHING AT ALL, just your mind entering dark places , we don't need to know why she feels low when she does so). That doesn't answer what I asked. She said the same thing to ARTPOP and Joanne, and now she says it again about Chromatica, and it's not just me thinking that. Her pain is due to her being a superstar when she after a while found out that she didn't want so many commitments and having to live up to fans' expectations, but she knows that now it's too late. The best way for you to get over a trauma is to tell someone about it and reframe it and as long as she doesn't open her mental valve, she won't get better and she's going to keep giving obscure testimonials like this on the next album and the next album and on and on…
November 3, 20213 yr ^ I have to say I agree. When I first saw this quote I just felt alarm bells ringing because I knew she had certainly said the same about ARTPOP and that she had said something similar about Joanne. I don't need to know the ins and outs of her trauma but I would much rather she never performed/released another album again if it's going to be traumatic for her.
November 3, 20213 yr Author What if the music helps her to process her thoughts, but relistening to it back or performing it and reliving it is what causes the pain? Also who are we to justify someone else's pain and trauma and how one should deal with it or express it? People cope in different ways - I am sure she didn't intend for the music to hurt her but if it does in its aftermath then that doesn't mean she can't attempt music again for catharsis. She also repeatedly talks about how the music heals others - it's a selfless act to support others which has been her mantra since day 1! Suddenly we are all experts in how someone none of us has met should deal with her dark thoughts and there's a one size fits all.. The best way for you to get over a trauma is to tell someone about it and reframe it and as long as she doesn't open her mental valve, she won't get better and she's going to keep giving obscure testimonials like this on the next album and the next album and on and on… Who's to say she hasn't / doesn't talk to people about it - just because she doesn't explain it to YOU doesn't mean she doesn't talk about it!?
November 3, 20213 yr Who's to say she hasn't / doesn't talk to people about it - just because she doesn't explain it to YOU doesn't mean she doesn't talk about it!? Well she's been saying this for the last 8 years so: either she hasn't opened up with anyone yet or whoever talked to her about it was useless in trying to help her.
November 3, 20213 yr Wait and you'll see she's going to say it again about the next album and you'll accept that excuse again.
November 3, 20213 yr Maybe it's something that she goes through with albums? They come from different places, serve for different purposes but have clearly always been her way to process her feelings, starting from TFM. It's not that deep really if you think of it. She's also a perfectionist, like most artists are, and it can be very consuming. I think it's great that she has found some happiness now. Edited November 3, 20213 yr by Sour Candy
November 3, 20213 yr Author Promoting the album may have caused her to enter more emotional turmoil - some people here want her to promote so badly despite the consequences to her well-being and if she did it their way, we wouldn't HAVE a Lady Gaga in the music industry creating music at all so I'd be grateful we actually get music and so much content from her while she is still able to. I'd rather Gaga made the music and then avoided the pain of promoting it so she can continue releasing music rather than making an album, promoting it until she damages herself (like Born This Way) and then suffer for years after it. What are a few extra thousand sales over the MENTAL and PHYSICAL well-being of a human being (and not just any human being, the most important human being in my life and the lives of many people that frequent this forum). I just don't get it.
November 3, 20213 yr On a side note: I think that bizarre and creepy yet fantastic Eli Russell Linnetz photoshoot from 2018 represents her mindset during the time. I can totally see it going hand in hand with songs like Alice and 911. Maybe it was the original 'Chromatica'? Just a speculation but it's fun to speculate. We still don't know why and when this photoshoot was done, do we? https://www.wmagazine.com/story/lady-gaga-e...-bizarre-photos Edited November 3, 20213 yr by Sour Candy
