Jessica Louise Nelson (born 14 June 1991) is an English singer who rose to prominence as a member of the British girl group Little Mix. They became the first group to win the British version of The X Factor, and would go onto become one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. Nelson initially auditioned as a solo act on the eighth series of The X Factor in 2011. After being eliminated as a solo performer, she was later brought back with three other contestants to form the girl group Little Mix. Nelson released six studio albums with the group and achieved five UK number-one singles. Following Nelson's departure from the group in December 2020, she signed to Polydor Records as a solo artist in 2021. In 2019, Nelson presented a BBC Three documentary based on her experiences with body image and online bullying titled Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out. In her documentary she also spoke about the impact cyber bullies have had on her life and mental health after she rose to fame with pop band Little Mix. The documentary broke multiple records, becoming BBC Three's top factual title since the channel moved online and on BBC One was watched by 3.3 million viewers. Classical crossover in dance music is hardly new; in the ’70s, disco remixes of orchestral staples were all the rage. But when Clean Bandit turned Mozart’s melodies into deep house on their 2014 debut, they somehow made it seem natural, rather than like a novelty. But then, two founding members of the London group are themselves classical musicians: Cellist Grace Chatto and violinist Neil Amin-Smith played together in a college string quartet when Chatto’s boyfriend, Jack Patterson, recorded a performance and began chopping it up over beats. Somewhere in between that “eureka” moment and writing 10 songs in the two weeks before their first gig, Clean Bandit (rounded out by Patterson and his brother Luke, a drummer) forged their sound: a lively, springy fusion of pop and dance, buoyed by classical music’s sense of scale and a conductor’s intuition for featuring the right soloist at the right time. In the case of their stratospheric 2014 breakout hit, “Rather Be”, that soloist was Jess Glynne, an all-but-unknown singer whose soulful but unpretentious tone control made her the perfect fit for the song’s memorable keyboard riff. German songwriter, producer, and DJ Topic refers to his sound as "melancholic dance music." Anne-Marie’s bold, booming voice has resonated around the world, both as a consummate dance-music collaborator and a brassy pop powerhouse. Born Anne-Marie Nicholson in Essex in 1991, the singer/songwriter never thought she’d make it far beyond her small village, but she was already making waves in London as a child, performing in prestigious West End theatre productions and becoming a karate world champion. U.K. drill MC Digga D spits gritty bars over low-end bass lines, trading in the dark, often violent lyrics associated with the genre. Digga D first emerged as part of West London crew 1011 before releasing a string of solo singles in 2017, including "Kill Confirmed," "Play for the Pagans," "No Hook," and "Next Up." The Metropolitan police launched a campaign to remove all of his videos in 2018, after they amassed significant views. This backfired, as Digga D fans re-uploaded them in multiple locations, leading to the police issuing a CBO (criminal behavior order) to the artist; this required him to screen all of his releases through the authorities, where they would not permit anything that incited violence against individuals or even certain areas of London. Singles that went through this process include "No Porkies," "Mad About Bars," and "Who?" “Back Again” might seem like a strange title for a debut single, but not for Joel Corry: When the British DJ/producer dropped his first record in 2015, he was already well known to UK audiences from his appearances on the MTV reality show Geordie Shore. While that program captured its cast members’ romantic misadventures with tongue firmly in cheek, Corry has treated his musical career with far more seriousness, faithfully updating the sounds of classic house with a sleek contemporary touch. Born in London in 1989, Corry was just a boy when the slinky sounds of UK garage catapulted underground dance music into British pop around the turn of the millennium, but he brings the same crossover spirit to his own productions. While 2015’s “Back Again” and “Light It Up” flirted with big-room EDM, Corry looked to the past for his breakout hit, a 2019 cover of Monsta Boy’s 2000 UK garage classic “Sorry” that paired soulful vocals with crisp, jittery drum programming. He’s pursued a similar approach on subsequent singles like “Lonely” and “Head & Heart”, updating the piano chords and organ stabs of ’90s dance pop with 21st-century production values. While Corry’s timeless hooks are perfect for radio, he’s careful to always have something special for the dance floor. As he told Apple Music: “With all my records I like to do my own VIP mix”—that is, a club-ready version that’s a little tougher and heavier. Swedish House Mafia

No artists represent the exuberance of the 2010s’ EDM boom quite like Swedish House Mafia. Stockholm natives Steve Angello, Axwell, and Sebastian Ingrosso only played as a trio for a few years, but they burned brighter than virtually any of their main-stage peers, perfecting a winning fusion of radio-ready choruses and earthshaking drops—and then pulling the plug at their peak. In the circus-like atmosphere of the EDM scene, they were living proof of an adage often attributed to P.T. Barnum: “Always leave them wanting more.”

 

All three DJs cut their teeth in the European progressive-house scene of the 2000s, and by 2007, they were informally calling themselves Swedish House Mafia. But not until 2010 did they release their first single under the name: “One,” an attention-grabbing epic whose Pharrell feature testified to the trio’s aim to conquer pop along with dance music. The next two years were a whirlwind of supersized hooks, armor-plated snares, and cheekily grandiose anthems like “Save the World,” a song that epitomized the heart-on-sleeve yearning of early-2010s EDM. Then, in 2012, they announced their farewell tour, which took them from autumn into the spring of 2013. They left behind the mix album Until One and the singles collection Until Now, the closest they came to releasing a proper full-length, along with two live albums and two documentary films. Five years later, the three reunited to headline Ultra Music Festival, teasing the possibility of future work together—and suggesting that as long as house music rules clubland, there’s a chance that Swedish House Mafia might return to reclaim their throne. - Apple Music

 

The Weeknd

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex, and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Like the work of collaborator Lana Del Rey or early booster (and fellow Toronto native) Drake, Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy, and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character.
