I suppose though as that sort of pop was fading a bit by 2002 it could've easily gone the way of S Club, who at the time Steps split also seemed like they were on top of the world.

I think in hindsight ending on a high worked out better for them and allowed a greater comeback for phase 2, even if the way it ended at the time was a bit sad and unfortunate.

Good point, the pop landscape was definitely changing. As much as it hurt I think they probably called it quits at the right time, it just could’ve and should’ve been done better.

I do like after the love has gone but it misses the sparkle of some of their other singles and i feel the same about loves got a hold on my heart.

While still a good album I def feel it doesn't hold up as good as step one and buzz.

With the value of hindsight i do agree that splitting was probably right but another album would have been successful for them and they would have had another 3 or 4 top 10 hits before they bowed out. I think how the split was done will always remain wrong mainly by the way H and Claire handled it but thankfully it has all come right again and ended up making them stronger.

I think they would have lost their run of top 5 singles but managed another platinum album potentially if they released one more after the GH before the break up. It all depends on what they released I guess, Alive by S Club just wasn't a great lead single compared to the previous three leads (although I do like it).

Alive for me wasnt all that great, with Steps if they had a good lead they easily would have had another platinum album but good point about about losing the Top 5 streak with the singles but still would have got top 10s.

Still, they decided to release Deeper in places they’ve done worse.

I think they either should’ve gone all promo with the Steptacular era over there or not bother. The fact that some songs were a (minor) hit like SYBM showed there was still some interest in them.

I agree, the fact Say You’ll Be Mine almost made the top 20 after After The Love Has Gone just made the top 50 showed that there was still a fan base for them here.

Agreed @Padamic_Tension

And..even the fact that Chain reaction reached top 50 with zero (?) promo makes me believe they could’ve done better with some singles over there.

That's right, I forgot about Chain Reaction making the top 50 off no promo.

In hindsight I guess we were lucky in Australia that we got Stomp and Buzz, as it looked like for a while that we wouldn't get them.

Definitely would have done better but the cost to do promo may have had a financial negative result.

Silly question maybe..but is it more expensive to release a single in Australia then in the UK/Europe back in the days?

The promo would definitely cost more, as you’re paying for flights, accommodation, transport etc.

Realising wise I’m not overly sure sorry.
