Vote C -

1974 Mud - Lonely This Christmas

2006 Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This

Vote D -

1987 Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind

2002 Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground

In Vote C the oldest contender still in the contest is up against one of most recent. Mud did get more straight votes and a higher percentage in their first round vote than Leona did, but Leona could benefit this time from being newer. In Vote D the contenders had very similar vote totals and percentages in Round 1, albeit with the Pet Shop Boys marginally higher on both measures, so this could be a close one.

Mud easily in the first vote but the second is a lot harder, i've gone Pet Shop Boys although I love the Girls Aloud track too.
The right winner for both of those. Rage have to be a strong contender to win this poll overall with them seemingly attracting voters who aren't engaging with this otherwise (nearly twice as many total votes in their round than the other simultaneous one!)

Vote E -

1995 Michael Jackson - Earth Song

1997 Spice Girls - Too Much

Vote F -

2001 Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid

2008 Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah

In Vote E Michael Jackon gained considerably more straight votes in round 1 than the Spice Girls did, but the Spice Girls had a marginally higher percentage of their vote, whilst in Vote F Alexandra had both more staight votes in round 1 and a higher percentage of her vote than Robbie and Nicole did.

Mud’s classic being beaten by an X Factor winning song is just  . (No disrespect to Leona who’s obviously one of the most successful X Factor winners - I’m sure she wouldn’t class it as her finest work herself.)

And the other result is wrong too in my view, though SOTU is great.

I’m fast losing interest in this - not because of the discussion here but because the electorate is so obviously skewed.

Much closer results there! Shame to see Mud go but Girls Aloud was the right winner in the second one imo (though I like the Pet Shop Boys song too).

Gonna need them to stop giving that awful Alexandra thing such easy matches.

Had it been Bleeding Love (not a Chrismtas #1 i know) beating Mud I would have said fair enough but that generic winners song bollocks I can't....

Anyway these are two pretty weak votes, can't say i'm particularly massive on any of them. Spice Girls and Robbie/Nicole I suppose.

1995 Michael Jackson - Earth Song - 40.2% (260 votes)

1997 Spice Girls - Too Much - 59.8% (386 votes)

Vote F - 521 votes cast

2001 Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid - 43% (224 votes)

2008 Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah - 57% (297 votes)

Probably worth pointing out that all four songs got less votes in Round 2 than they did in Round 1, with Alexandra's votes more or less halving, and Michael Jackson's reduced to exactly a third of what it was before. Of the previous 8 songs in Round 2 only one of them, the Pet Shop Boys, got less votes than hey had in Round 1.

Vote G -

1984 - Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas

1998 - Spice Girls - Goodbye

Vote H -

1975/1991 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite

In Vote G we have the song that gained the highest percentage of the vote in Round 1, Band Aid, versus Goodbye which got slightly more straight votes than it. In Vote B Queen got comfortably more straight votes in round 1 than Jackie, but Jackie got a sligthly larger perecentage of his vote.

Vote I -

1985 - Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone

1996 - Spice Girl - 2 Become 1

Of the final pair the Spice Girls were comfortably ahead of Shaky in both measures in Round 1, but Shaky seems to be taking an early lead so far in Round 2.

Ridiculous that the Spices are beating some christmas classics!

Bet Shaky gets beat too although 2 Become 1 has become their classic xmas track so that would be a little more bearable!

Voting numbers are such a tiny proportion of the population that an organised fan base is getting their faves sailing through against actual christmas classics that chart every year and that have sold millions :P

Pointless exercise if you arent doing it across all media via a phone or internet vote to appeal to all parts of the population....

It’s not just that - I have no confidence that the people voting are weighing up the merits of the songs properly. Like when Buzzjack does polls of course they’re slightly skewed because the forum represents a particular demographic but I have every confidence that the people voting will have done the research necessary and will have at least tried to put aside their prejudices and vote fairly. This vote seems to be largely coming down to “Which one was out when I was growing up?”

I do realise it’s just a little Twitter poll and not worth getting worked up about. :arrr: :D

Goodbye beating Band Aid wtaf lol!

One of those ITV "The Nations Favourite..." programmes would probably have got a better demographic mix but it is what it is.

224 - 2001 - Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid (Down 91 votes on round 1)

122 - 1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite (Down 125 votes on round 1)

By perecentage

80.8% - 1975/1991 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

73% - 2009- Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name

69.3% - 1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me

59.8% - 1997 - Spice Girls - Too Much

59.1% - 1998 - Spice Girls - Goodbye

58.2% - 1996 - Spice Girls - 2 Become 1

27% - 1989 - Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas

19.2% - 1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite

So of those eliminated in Round 2, Band Aid II had the most straight votes, very closely followed by Shaky, whilst Mud had the highest percentage of their vote of any eliminated contender in the round. We've lost the last bastion of the 2010s now, with the elimation of Clean Bandit, leaving us with the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, and even then Queen is the sole representative of the 70s and Human League are the only 80s contenders remaining. Aside from the second coming of Bo Rhap, the 90s are now soley a Spice Girls zone, but they do at least have three fingers still in the pie so to speak, as all 3 of their yuletide toppers are through.
