ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Porter Robinson - Nurture

 

 

Congratulations to Porter Robinson then who had the best album of the year with Nurture. This served as his second album, a very long awaited follow up to 2014's 'Worlds' and it was clear he was really taking his time to make something special. Certainly an album that lived up to the mass hype from EDM fans, and proving I had nothing to worry about after I thought the lead single 'Get Your Wish' wasn't up to his previous work (it is a good song, but easily my least fave of the singles chosen). It's all very well thought out electronica/future pop with Porter exploring his emotions which was rather relatable for me in these past two depressing years. It's not all easy listening with some experimental moments though for me they have the right balance of electronic glitchiness and melody, then there's some really lovely moments as in the opening track 'Lifelike' and a tribute to his 'Mother'. Then there's the four stand-out singles which I'll get to in that rundown. It's great to hear a lot of his vocal on the record too, as he's clearly put a lot of work into the vocal textures and atmospheres here - and the production and compositional effort is unmatched by everyone else in this field. Definitely worth a listen if you're into any kind of electronic music.

THE FORMAT

Here is how my EOY chart works this year. The top 200 best 'selling' songs of the year (as determined by my points system) will be counted down, with a brief commentless mention to the 50 songs that missed the cut. The tracking year for 2020 takes into account points accumulated from chart #536 to the most recent #587. The points are baed on two factors; playcount taken from the chart dates inclusive, as well as weekly chart positions. Any plays from today onwards will count towards next year's chart. The chart points will be expressed as 'sales' totals for the tracking year. To keep it fair, any song that charted during the tracking year is eligible, including tracks that did not peak during the tracking year, which means there will be a few 'leftovers' from the previous year.

Good to see Poison finishing at around 201-250. Wish it was a little bit higher.

One of the real great tracks of Porter Robinson's album of the year, and one that could've been top 100 with better timing, though he has two songs still to come which could go top 100. Ytram is a name you may not recognise but he is in fact an alias of the better known Martin Garrix! He unveiled himself behind the alias in time for his second release under the name, although some fans suspected it beforehand as it is literally Marty spelt backwards. 'Fire' is in collaboration with Elderbrook which also got him his biggest hit in the chart since 'Cola'. It's a great melodic house track with clear melodic house influences and a direction I'd be happy for him to continue down (though sadly we've still only had one Ytram follow-up since).

Lane 8 managed to get three sleeper hits this year from the album 'Brightest Lights' he put out at the start of the year. The most recent of these to impact was 'Road' which appears to be the most popular of his on Spotify and is at #55 here. It's got a nice laidback beat accompanied by the lovely vocal of Arctic Lake, a great melodic house track - and with the sub-genre gaining popularity in my chart this year it is only right that one of its leaders has multiple appearances in the list.

We'll be seeing more of Lane 8 this year for sure, and next year too as he's about to put out another album! Meanwhile this still sounds lovely as ever.

Disclosure had a bit of a low key comeback this year putting out a non commercial EP, the highlights were for me 'Seduction' and this song which are more or less interchangeable but by the points system it's this that makes the top 200. It's a great standard Disclosure style classic-house record, nothing more or less.
