Ooh new Christmas songs also sounds like a great idea ;)

I'd rather here shite new ones than the same old shite old ones.

ArDee belting out Jingle Bell Rocks with guest slots from SWITCHOTR, A1 and J1, Russ Millions and guest slots from D Block Europe would be preferable to hearing All I Want for Christmas again.

Nah I don't mind having them around. A lot of the current hits aren't that interesting anyway lol (besides the tiktok-boosted ones like Seventeen Going Under, but that's already peaked in the top 10 regardless)

Restricting it to newer Christmas songs would just mean the Amazon/Alexa exclusive tracks shooting to #1 every year (if anything needs to be disqualified it should be those lmao)

Christmas charts used to be exciting but X Factor domination and then streaming of the older hits has, for me, removed a lot of the fun of the seasonal charts. It might not be so bad if it was only the Christmas Day chart that was full of the older songs, but now it’s pretty much the whole of December that they take over, and in pretty much the same order year after year

I would permanently exclude any track once it reaches 52 weeks in the top 40 or 100 weeks in the top 100. The charts are already “manipulated” with the weighted streaming ratios and limiting of three tracks from one artist- both of those changes were introduced to keep a bit of variety and unpredictability in the charts, and I think the Christmas season charts definitely need more variety and surprises now.

My solution would be to double ACR tracks that are at least 15 years old. For example Mariah would have been only top 20 the week she was number 1 last year. Would also allow modern perennials like Underneath The Tree and Santa Tell Me the chance to shine over the likes of Mariah, Wham and The Pogues.

There’s been talk about having different levels of ACR before - at least with only one level the chart remains reasonably transparent and you can see more or less what’s really happening. More than that and I think it could become a bit of a mess.

there was a drill football song this year so a drill Christmas song surely can't be ruled out, I'm half expecting someone to try it this year.

I mean if you don't mind having a chart that doesn't reflect the listening habits of the public in any way plus some very poor sales, I guess?

Simple fact is, people like familiarity and no amount of manipulation is going to change that at Christmas. While I do believe newer Christmas songs should be encouraged and think radio could do a better job of promoting them, the olds ones are classics for a reason - they don't age so it's not unreasonable for people to go back to them.

December is always pretty much a wasteland for new music anyway and when people go back over their favourites of the year and radios only play Christmas music, so it wouldn't exactly be an exciting chart nonetheless, the Christmas charts have always felt distinctive from the rest of the year and I personally wouldn't want to lose that.

Plus, I like the stats it throws up. It allowed Wham and Mariah Carey to get belated number 1s, the former after years of being the best selling number 2 ever thus altering chart history as we know it, little quirks like that make it enjoyable!

No, keep them in as it has provided many of the classics to achieve new peaks such as Elton John, Wham and Mariah Carey to name but a few.
The whole chart should invent a different way of counting sales… give a different ratio to older songs, songs that are being played by the same people, being played by playlists etc etc… the whole thing of a specific xmas song selling millions of copies every year by being played by 95% the same people is hilarious
Well I certainly can't see streaming been replaced as the dominant form of music consumption anytime soon, nowhere near as quickly as it replaced the digital download if ever. So at least there's hope that somewhere down the line OCC will find the right solution to this and other issues it throws up for the charts.

How can streaming be replaced? It cant, unless there is an internet disaster or streaming will no longer be free, which is kind of strange to think of
For me there should be no chart rules. The chart should illustrate which songs are genuinely the most popular from that week. All of the rules that have been introduced are wrong in my opinion. If Christmas songs are the most consumed songs then they deserve to chart.
It's not like anything would actually change by starring out the old Christmas songs, the general public wouldn't notice and would still stream older songs, Majority of publicity for the charts (outside of a high profile release like Adele/Ed Sheeran) comes from December, I'm not sure they'd wanna lose that to keep a few chart geeks happy.

Please god yes!

New Christmas music I’d be fine occupying the top end of the charts as that’s what we need when we comes to December Christmas music but NEW music; there must have been a time before when new Christmas music year upon year or every other year was a thing these days if hardly ever gets a chance for new Christmas music to really shine. Even things like Christmas #1 don’t feel exciting either.

I’m a fan of Christmas don’t get me wrong but am I fan of the charts in December absolutely not!

I’ve accepted always going to be the same old songs what occupy and dominate and new Christmas music barely stands a chance (like look at Taylor and Little Mix’s peaks of their try for Christmas music).

We need to have some sort of either double ACR or a separate chart for tracks older than say 10 years old. I don’t see it changing though but I’d personally much prefer the singles chart in December if it were to do something with the old Christmas songs constantly occupying the top positions.

I really hate how dominant Xmas songs have become in recent years, especially now that they even chart in November

also hate people's habits in regards to xmas songs, basically going to Spotify and clicking the Christmas playlist and listening like a robot for 6 weeks without ever skipping a song or getting tired of hearing the same songs in the same order in a loop for ages

also hate how Alexa manipulates the charts and reports crazy unrealistic figures

but at the same time, it's what people listen so the charts should reflect that

Only Mariah and Wham have charted in the top 40 in November this year! This Friday is 3/12 chart ending 9/12!

If the music industry starts demanding the amount it should actually be receiving for streaming as far as royalties go then I'd imagine it would be replaced pretty quickly by illegal downloads, and a handful of CD/legal download holdouts - giving us thedaft harts of the early to mid 2000s revisited

Without giving it to much thought this seems like a reasonable solution.

For every Taylor or LM there is Leona and Kelly Clarkson, this way we get to see new perennials breaking as time goes by.
