For every Taylor or LM there is Leona and Kelly Clarkson, this way we get to see new perennials breaking as time goes by.

I’m so thankful Leona released One More Sleep in the sales era as it probably wouldn’t have even went top 100 if she released it two later. I love her but that song iirc got its peak and took off because of X Factor didn’t it. I think it just made top 40 initially then it took off after the performance but it was in the sales era it wouldn’t have done anything if released in streaming sadly.

Tbf aside from Ed who’s trying with Elton I can only really see Ariana having a shot at Christmas #1 with a brand new release and that’s if she chooses to do another Christmas project as her won song Santa Tell Me may eclipse any new material she puts out there.

How can streaming be replaced? It cant, unless there is an internet disaster or streaming will no longer be free, which is kind of strange to think of

Well exactly, it won't be. Unless something else were to come along in a couple of decades that we couldn't even think of that would change everything again, but that's unlikely.

If the music industry starts demanding the amount it should actually be receiving for streaming as far as royalties go then I'd imagine it would be replaced pretty quickly by illegal downloads, and a handful of CD/legal download holdouts - giving us thedaft harts of the early to mid 2000s revisited

Can u be more specific? :P

Yeh it was XF but also a performance on Johnathan Ross near to Christmas!

There are a few examples in other businesses, for instance the gaming business, i think there was sometime you could play anything for free, but now you need to pay for it, steam, playstation etc… honestly i would like to see the chart a bit more similar to how it was 10-15 years ago.. now its a mess artists and music fans have no identity, lost in this chaos of overconsumption..

I believe thats something that will happen in the future ( pay [more] for music) and this is based on pure logic.. whatever is wanted by many people gets more expensive. Now whether it will happen in 10-20 or 50 years we cant predict
Are you really asking for people to pay more money for music which they Can access online in some shape or form anyway?
There was never a time in the gaming industry where you could (legally) play anything for free...

Thats actually corrent, my point is that there is not easy anymore to access games free/illegally

Should they exclude Dua Lipa just because I don’t care for her?

Am I asking people something? With all this streaming i cant enjoy music anymore, we dont pay any attention to it we are mostly encouraged and meant to stream as much as everything if possible.

I know, I read that and I was thinking what? when??

I could play fifa / football manager for free ( copying a friends’ cd or downloading illegaly) i think now there are ways to prevent this.

These things change over time though. vinyl's went out in favour of CD Singles, which then went out of favour for digital downloads. Now that has been overtaken by streaming. There's no point keeping a market alive if the interest isn't there.

Yes artists still release vinyl's and some do CD singles as well but it's no longer the leading format.

I also don't think that last part is correct either. I don't listen to any pre-made Spotify playlists like NMF or Hot Hits. I'll find artists I like and listen to their albums. I'm sure there are many others like me.

I think the music 'industry' people are doing fine. It's the artists who aren't getting paid enough. But yanno, not like they matter to the label.

Lmao I was just meaning it's less likely for streaming to be replaced by some other "format" or way of consuming music because it is so radically different from any of the pay per copy formats of consuming music that came before it and the genie is out of the bottle now. We're never going back to a majority paid for sales market and who would want to tbh. We can complain about negative impacts as chart followers but I couldn't be without Spotify now. It could be replaced by a different form of streaming service that had its own impact on the way things chart but I still wouldn't expect something like that to happen for a long while if it does.

There are but you might be the minority as.. again i find ridiculous for example mariah carey’s song ti be credited with millions of sales every december because 95% of the same people stream it year by year. It just doesnt make sense to me. There were singles that exist almost in every house in the country for example candle in the wind/ bohemian rhapsody etc… how fair is to compare those singles with all i want for xmas and say, hey candle in the wind sold 5 m, am AIWFC sold 20m? 20m what?

Oh with that statement I agree, sales figures seem are completely different now but it’s just the way the industry is now. Unless the OCC, ARIA and others brings in rules (which I’ve got no idea what they could do) this won’t change.

Anyway perhaps it’s another discussion for another thread.

Well yeah the all-time record lists do look a bit of a mess at the moment with the discrepancies between 'sales' in different eras but i'm not sure what can be done about that.

We are not the ones who will decide, just sharing opinions which will not be taken into account, and mine was to have different ratios for same people streams, playlists, maybe even for older songs. Not only in the charts but on the sales they are credited with….
