Solar Power is gorgeous, it really did sound great this summer (and still does!). Wilshire was a highlight from Tyler's album for me, and I actually liked Body quite a lot, it's about time we had a drill #1 tbh.

Stormzy had two features this year with some indirects that led to some more unanswered diss tracks from Chip and this was the pick of the two. This is a dark and moody grime track that builds well with the basic but effective chorus and verses from Ghetts and Stormzy. But in the 2nd half. starting with Ghett's 2nd verse (where he takes on his alter-ego 'Ghetto'), the song goes up another gear becoming more aggressive and punchy and climaxing with a cinematic outro with a choir on backing vocals which is completely epic.

Titanium was the bigger of Dave's two tracks that comprised his first release since 'Paper Cuts' in 2019, reaching the top 10 in the official charts. This is sonically quite similar to the aforementioned single with a hard drill beat and short run time. Two minutes doesn't give noted lyricist and story-teller Dave much time to shine but every line he gets in here hits and gives the song a reason to live in the memory and justifies its existence in the aftermath of being left off the album. It's not deep and it's not even particularly crazy lyrically but it proves that Dave could really write easy hits in his sleep if he wanted to.

'Boy' was my instant highlight of the new tracks from my first listen of the album but didn't hold up as well as a different album track yet to appear did. Lyrically, this is in the same vain of Olivia Rodrigo's big hits this year, discussing the immaturity of her ex boyfriend with some pretty damning disses. The song was originally titled 'F**kboy' before Maisie decided on the pause before saying '... boy' and I think she made the right decision, it sound perfect. Signing Maisie is the best thing Ed Sheeran has been responsible for!

One of a new trend of tracks that are able to debut high in the official chart without being by established stars by blowing up on TikTok pre-release. Tjay and 6lack are fine on this song, solid if not spectacular, but what makes Calling My Phone such an earworm is the high-pitched (sampled?) 'I can't get you off my mind now' refrain that is weirdly soothing and makes this song such a relaxing bop.

I don't know what else I can say about this song apart that it's absolutely mental. It seems to have about 3 different hooks with the one of the title is based off (I'm a pirate, yeah, yeah, yeah) being god-awful in a way that becomes brilliant and stupidly catchy. It feels like it's about 8 different tracks in 1, the 'girls all over the world' part is excellent and it feels like the song could have been something special if it kept with that idea. I think this is a mess but I absolutely love it and cannot stop listening. I fear this is one I will be wishing I ranked higher this time next year.

Jorja released a pretty lowkey EP this year to bridge the gap before her 2nd full studio album. The lead single was Addicted, a quite unique sounding hit amongst her discography. The instrumental feels quite rock-y and is a move away from the R&B sounds her voice has excelled over earlier. This is just such a soulful record and even without any show-offy powerful or loud vocals, Jorja's voice still shines. This probably deserves to be higher but I haven't gone back to it enough in the last few months.

Kendrick's first proper release since the Black Panther soundtrack was highly anticipated and turned out to be as a feature on this track by his real life cousin. This song is very experimental which frequent beat changes and Kendrick in particular provides some wild flows. Lyrically, Kendrick is killing it as ever while Keem has some decent bars but also some completely confusing ones. But that is part of the songs appeal, it's slightly confusing and you never know where it's going to go next.

In something I never would have guessed at the start of the year, Bebe Rexha released an album I really loved and gets four songs into the EOY top 100, all as lead artist. I think a lot of her recent work has been generic (including some of the songs on this album) but that's not something that can labelled against this title track. The whispery, spoken interludes in this track really give it a weird edge that makes it stand out. This is a really fun track with strong replay value and a great introduction into what would be a near-perfect album if it wasn't for the maddeningly rubbish 'Amore' cover with Rick Ross.

Rosé became the second of of the four Blackpink members to release their solo debut in early 2021. If you've watched the Netflix documentary on Blackpink, you will know that Rosé loves to write music and play her guitar so it wouldn't have come as too much of a shock that her solo songs are much more indie and ballad-y than the fun, electronic k-pop of her group. Gone is the slower of the two tracks from 'R' and is a absolute lovely listen. It's just missing the little spark that 'On The Ground' had to elevate it even higher.

Nice to see Heartbreak Anthem here - I like the fact it's very much a Galantis song despite the famous feature, a shame you're not liking it as much any more!

Anne-Marie recruited Little Mix for this brash track that samples Lumidee's 2003 'Never Leave You', probably not with the intention of bagging her first hit in my charts but it ended up indeed being a positive side-effect. The signs were already on the wall though as I thought her previous single 'Our Song' was the best thing she had released up until that point. The video begins with a parody of the airplane scene from 'Bridesmaids'. You feel like this premise would have continued for the full video had Perrie & Leigh-Anne not been pregnant at the time. Anne-Marie & Jade certainly seemed to make it up by having a lot of fun in the rest of the video. :lol:

Ariana has had at least one song in the top 2 of my EOY charts since she debuted in 2014 so this is by far the lowest she has ever had her highest entry in my charts. I have no doubts that she'll be right back at the top end when she released her next proper single but for now she has earned a little break (even if it's been the busiest break ever lol). This was the strongest from the deluxe tracks on 'positions's but at only 2 minutes and 4 seconds it does still feel a bit unessential.
