I'd never heard any music from Snoh until her appearance on Dave's album but when I saw on YouTube that she had just released a video for a track with Tyler, I felt I needed to check it out. What struck me straight away was that Tyler had definitely produced the beat, aside from his providing his guest verses. This sounds like it's straight off one of his own albums and that is not a bad thing at all. This is just a really fun track that leaves you wanting more. I've just found out that there's a 2nd Tyler feature on the album so I need to check that one out too!

#73 matches Jorja's first hit to become her equal 2nd highest finish in my EOY charts. I already knew that Jorja has such a stunning voice but her VEVO live performance of this was also just really fun which I wasn't expecting, especially for a track with quite existential lyrics. I remember her Glastonbury set being brilliant too a couple of years ago and the video I've linked above has solidified her an an artist high on my bucket list of those I would love to see perform live. There's not too many artists who's live performance sound near enough identical to the record but Jorja is certainly one of them.

I can't quite put my finger on my this one didn't connect with people (including myself) as much as a lot of their previous work has. This sounds suitably epic with dramatic harmonies and a brash, bold production but it's not able to get anywhere near the Little Mix top tier. I do still really enjoy this one though and it was only blocked off the top spot by Maisie Peters's 'Psycho' which was (spoiler alert) one of my absolute favourites of the year. Fair play to Leigh-Anne & Perrie for filming so many music videos while at late stages of their pregnancies too!

Drake has released a lot of dross in 2021 but he did manage one diamond in the rough with this 6 and a half minute pure Hip-Hop track with no hook that allows Ross & Drake space to breathe and just spit bars. Just like 'Calling My Phone' the true standout in this track is a high-pitched sample that plays in the background. This is sampled from Danish band Quadron's 2010 song 'Pressure' and is the little titbit that gets stuck in your brain and kept me going back. The song is lyrically just a typical brag track but the beat and sample really elevates it into sounding like it's something epic.

Kacey Musgraves's EOY History:

2021 70 Justified

After being unlucky to land at #101, Kacey gets her first of three entries in my top 100 with the main single from her album, Justified, landing at #70. This track is about her mixed emotions after her divorce and the contradictory feelings that arise during her emotional healing and growth. Despite the deep topic, the song is upbeat and bops along really well and the chorus is an understated earworm.

Lauren Jauregui's EOY History:

2018 46 Expectations

2021 69 Sorry

I really enjoyed Lauren's first single after leaving Fifth Harmony, 'Expectations' in 2018 but thought that most of what she released since was very forgettable so I didn't have high hopes going into listening to her first EP but I thought that I'd give it a go since I loved FH so much. And I was pretty blown-away by how mature this sounded. Every track from the EP is just really good and I think she's one of the most criminally under-looked artists out there at the moment, especially seeming that she should have already had a build-in fanbase. I'll talk about her more when we get to 'Scattered' but for now I'll say this a lovely slice of soulful R&B and I'd urge anyone to give her EP a listen and you might be surprised.

This and the last song (Sorry) have both been helped out massively by the relative quiet Christmas release schedule and have racked up a lot more listens and points in my chart than they would have earlier in the year. This one even managed to keep growing in my affections and get a #6 peak after the video was released. Maisie's verses are great as ever but Sarcastic Sounds's highly-autotuned vocals took a little while to get used to. But once they clicked, I think it fits in perfectly and became very sing-along-able.

Hi Lewis

2021 was the year of Maisie Peters for me!! She was my biggest discovery without doubt. It was nice to see her breakthrough into the mainstream a bit with 'Psycho' and the album too. Can't wait to see where she goes from here.

I'm with you where there was just something about 'Love (Sweet Love)' that didn't click and I'm not even sure what it was really. I love a good female vocal moment and Perrie is doing the most on the track so it'd normally be the sort of thing I love. Saying that, I loved 'No' and it was even more of a flop so oh well.

If it wasn't for Olivia Rodrigo, I would definitely be agreeing with you as having Maisie as my biggest discovery in 2021

Since 'Revenge of the Dreamers III' completely blew me away, I usually give most of the rappers on Dreamville a listen when they release something new and this was one of the most instantly appealing of those I've heard. This was apparently recorded to be the theme for Bas's podcast which makes sense, the intro sounds like the perfect lead into an episode. I don't know much about 'The Hics' but they appear to be a electronic/jazz band from London. I do like the female backing vocals that they provide on this one.

I do remember being allowed to watch the original High School Musical one Christmas at primary school as a 'treat' that 50% of the students didn't seem to be happy with.

I've heard Bas on Jungle's 'Romeo' but not any of his solo stuff - giving Smoke From Fire a listen now, sounding okay - I particularly like the chorus.

I don't believe I've heard that one before. I might have to give it a little listen later :)

Thanks again Pete :D

I was really surprised by just how good this was the first time I heard it in March. Before this, 'I'm A Mess' was the only track of her own that I had really loved and I wasn't really clamouring for more Bebe. But this just a simply great dance-pop track. It does feel like a little throwback, especially with the video with the final scene that more than resembles the iconic opening of 'Blade'. I might be tempted to say that this is probably the strongest track on 'Better Mistakes' but I was slightly over it by the time they album came out which meant that two other tracks were able to ride the hype and finish higher in this countdown.

The title track from Maisie's debut studio album lands at #65. Lyrically, the song seems to be full of non-sequiturs that describe some of her throughs as a 20 year old. This was written before Drivers License so the line in the chorus is not a reference to Olivia Rodrigo, even if the timing of the release certainly made it feel like it was. This song's really fun and a great opener to the album.

I've enjoyed quite a few of Bas's songs with J. Cole (especially Tribe and Let Go My Hand) but I haven't looked into much else of his! Smoke From Fire sounds pretty good though :)

I think Bas does his best work with J. Cole to be fair. :) Glad you enjoyed Smoke From Fire, it went largely unnoticed so it deserves a bit of hype.

Thanks Ansel :)

After the rumours surrounding Drivers License, Sabrina wasted no time in making the situation to her advantage with this released only 2 weeks later and gaining her first taste of UK chart success with this supposed 'reply' single à la Frankee. This is a really solid pop song and didn't deserve to fall away as quickly as it did. I'm excited for the album this year, 'Singular Acts I & II' were both great and I can't wait to hear how she follows them up. After 'Skin' and 'Skinny Dipping', maybe all the tracks are going to have 'skin' in the title.
