Little Mix are one of the most successful artists in my chart's history and if this is to be their final entry then I would like to thank them for all the memories and brilliant music they've provided. 'No' feels quite similar to L(SL) in both style and substance but this just works better. It's not quite as brash with the vocals but their voices still get some time to shine, especially with Perrie's extended 'so baby read my lips' before the final chorus. I'm sure they will be popping up again as solo artist but I really hope we will see them back together one again. Tour is going to be emotional.

This was not originally a highlight from Madison's album but she released a life performance of this and 'Follow The White Rabbit' from her live concert onto YouTube and I watched it for FTWR but it was her performance of 'Sour Times' that really caught my eye. It's such a great performance that really brings the track to life and is what actually convinced me to get tickets to see her on tour in April. The Weeknd keeps up a 7 year streak of landing entries in my top 100 with his collaboration with Doja Cat. The reaction to this one seemed quite muted for Doja's standard which I would attribute to this being a much more traditional and slower track than most of her other singles that were blowing up from the album at the time, which is a shame because I found this one to be such an earworm. This shows that me that Doja could release some brilliant pure-R&B tunes if she wanted to.

I still don't use TikTok or have any idea what she does in the videos that made her famous but one of the platform's biggest stars, Dixie D'Amelio managed to bag herself a #1 hit in my charts with 'Psycho'. She must have got much better writers and producers working for her this year because I've heard her two songs that have reached the UK Top 100 and they are both absolutely dreadful, In comparison, this is so much more polished and a hell of a lot less cheap. There are 8 credited writers on this track including Dixie but between them they've certainly hit upon something catchy and a large improvement on what went before. Rubi's guest rap verse isn't too bad but if you want to cringe, just google the video of her thinking a Drake lyric from his new album is a reference to her. Despite it's low position on my last.fm chart, the website has told me that it was the song I played the most in a single day during 2021 so that's a nice record for it to have!

It took the video release for this one to really hit me but this is hip-hop at its purest so was always going to win me over. It's maybe not as flashy as the tracks with big name features and has no hook to fall back on; this is essentially just one verse with a spoken intro and outro but it absolutely makes the most of that one verse. Cole is the goat and uses this song as a punchy takedown of the broke and lesser rappers who love to cap on their tracks and send shots his way. The video is simple but effective and this is definitely the best use of a Martin Luther King Jr. sample this year :heehee:

I was never too keen on her breakthrough smash hit but this is such a great song and deserved to smash in the same way. Tate was a finalist on the US TV show 'So You Think You Can Dance' and highlights all her skills in this brilliantly choreographed video that shows her portraying a waiter performing a routine with a colleague throughout an empty restaurant. Tate was some nice uniquities in her voice that the simple and raw production help to emphasise. This disappeared from the chart just as Christmas music was beginning to take over and it's a shame that it hasn't yet made a comeback.

After 5 years away, we can welcome back Charli XCX to my EOY countdowns :cheer: I hadn't really heard much of her hyperpop releases of recent times but I've been going back through them and enjoying them after she exploded back into the mainstream with this perfect pop record. The song is brash, loud, memorable and endlessly replayable. The video is absolutely iconic with Charli audaciously dancing her way through a funeral. Her follow-up wasn't half bad either and is still to come in this countdown. The album has now very quickly established itself as my most anticipated and I can't wait to see her on tour because I know she's going to smash it.

There was just something about collaborations with artists named Jay on this album. Kanye has done a lot of stupid stuff over the past few years and the quality control on some of his tracks (looking at you 'Lift Yourself') but there's not many artist who are still capable of creating something as stunning and haunting as this. Kanye's verse sees him reflecting on his mother's death and then telling a story about how poverty, violence and drugs effects the poorest families and is some of the most focused and poetic bars he has spat in years. The verse is all the more hard-hitting for the beautiful production and the gospel 'Jesus Lord' adlibs sprinkled throughout the verse. Jay Electronica's verse is the high-point of the album. He absolutely murders his verse with some crazy flows and metaphorical and symbolic schemes. The song then ends powerfully with an outro by Larry Hoover Jr. pleading for his father to be released from prison and thanking Kanye for bringing his case to the president.

Kicking off the top quarter of my chart are the current queens of R&B, Summer Walker & Ari Lennox. And just like with 'Jesus Lord' this is another entry where the featured artist completely steals the show. Summer sounds great but Ari's vocals are just insane. Her rendition of the chorus sounds like velvet to the ears. A proper 'hair stand on end' moment the first time I heard this. This is just a beautiful old-school R&B track with some fun jazzy elements in the production. I also love the little call-back to Cardi B's interlude in 'Bitter' where Cardi tells Summer to write about how she makes her own money and then one of the lyrics in this is "got my own money".

I didn't have too much hope for this one on paper. Everything I'd heard previously from ArrDee had been pretty poor and the sample is one of my absolutely favourite songs from childhood (T2 & Jodie Aysha's 'Heartbroken') leading to a situation that could easily go wrong, But, ArrDee manages to deliver a career best performance and that sample is just too good not to get hyped with. This is just a throwaway party song where the sample is the most important part of the song and that suits ArrDee as it masks his slightly sub-par lyricism. The chorus apeing the flow from the bridge of 'Heartbroken' is TOO catchy. It's stuck in my head for weeks after every listen. Fun video too :lol:

'You Right' and 'Good Ones' are my recent faves here. I agree that pure R&B suits Doja Cat well and I'd love to hear more, but it's nice that she's more versatile than that! I haven't listened to Charli XCX's hyperpop either but this was a great return nonetheless, definitely deserved better chart-wise.

Yeah I'm glad that Doja mixes it up a lot. I love the wild flows she uses in a lot of her more rap influences records.

 

Good Ones really deserved a top 40 peak :(

A year after it smashed records across the world, Olivia Rodrigo's debut single 'Drivers License' lands at #23 in my EOY countdown. What really needs to be said about this song? It turned Olivia from a young actress on a Disney show to the biggest pop star in the world almost overnight. I'm sure it's success was not harmed by the controversy surrounding her High School Musical co-star, but the song is more than good enough to stand alone from that, especially with it's wonderfully constructed bridge. This is also the first song that appeared in my top 10 of the year on last.fm to appear, it's position slightly skewered due to spamming the album. All this praise for the song and she still has 3 more #1 hits to appear in this countdown.

Good Ones is Charli's best since 1999 for me! :wub: I love You Right too, and much of Planet Her - annoying that TikTok basically killed its chances of a decent chart run dead lol.
