A spirited & dreamy progressive electronica rework of the title track from Parra for Cuva's recent, flawless studio album Juno. I wasn't blown away at first but it slowly took over my brain and it snatched a #6 peak near the end of its 2 month run on my chart.

I discovered Jasper Tygner through the Altar playlist on Spotify where Change Your Mind, the preceding single to this was playlisted and have been following him ever since. His Eyes Open EP is fantastic and his is music has a habit of growing rather than fading. This track is one of his more uptempo ones. I love the melodic UK garage style of it and the barely there vocal is hypnotic to say the least.

Dance divas Rebecca & Fiona have been pretty much a mainstay on my chart since it rebooted last year, scoring 6 successive top 10 hits and counting. This poptastic track, not a Moloko cover, has been one of their best for me. It's pure dancefloor euphoria with hook after hook.

Super duo Hildegard, consisting of Ouri and Helena Deland, make an appearance with some fun car alarm racket. The duo says “Jour 1” is “about processing by partying, and the clarity that sometimes comes with it.” They drew inspiration from Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century nun and writer. I recall confirming or considering this for BJSC at one point before it was sent by Persephonia. I thought it was too niche and complex at the time.

Signed to the Musical Freedom label, BYOR is a DJ who is generally too generic and playlist fodder for me but he had a brief run of 2 singles which were very to my taste (CamelPhat-esque with pleasant female vocals). This was one of those singles. ‘The Cure’ has the perfect amount of bounce, wobble, and groove to get you romping through the dance floor in your living room

Taken from Paris Green's debut album Fear, 'Maya' is a fantastic breakbeat song boasting glitchy vocals and rich synths which glide beneath the chattering drum patterns. Paris Green is a Dutch DJ who has been on the rise since being discovered by Kolsch on his BBC Radio 1 Residency show. A lovely ambient mix has also been released.

I went through a bit of a trap, electronic phase at the start of 2021 and Juche fed into this nicely with his weekly releases. This track in particular was top notch. I loved the energy, vocal sample layering and intensity of it. To this day I haven't a clue from which song the vocal sample is from despite it sounding incredibly familiar lol~

37 DJ Counselling - Reflection

A 6-minute deep house epic with D&B elements and luscious strings. This was a big mood piece for me at the start of 2021 and calmed my anxiety during some really tough times. DJ Counselling has jokingly referred to the song as his Christmas tune due to open hi-hat sounding like a sleigh bell. Doctor Blind posted that DJ Counselling gave him Bonobo vibes~

I've been a huge Kelly Lee Owens stan ever since discovering her through Aeroche sending "Melt!" to BJSC and her album Inner Song was in my top 5 of 2020. I didn't think too much of "Jeanette" upon the album release and thought it was a bit of an odd post-album single choice. But as it happens, it went on to spend 3 months on my chart following the single edit release so I guess you could say I was a bit obsessed.

35 Jacques Greene - I Won't

One of 2 new singles included on his ANTH01 compilation released this year, "I Won't" had an interesting run on my chart, spending nearly its whole run in the top 10 before crashing out due to ACR. Greene has been making music “about the club” for over a decade, and this hazy electronic banger is another fine example of that.

Hey Kath. Loads of great choices there! “Jour 1” was entered when I hosted - was quite interesting seeing that one predicted to DNQ when it quite easily made it in the end, though I guess it was probably a favourable draw for it. I obvs loved it. <3

Speaking of Persephonia entries, great also to see Godford here. My fave of their singles this year was “Can't Get Over You” which was on my BJSC potentials list but they have had a lot of interesting singles out this year.

 

Also want to show some love for “Jeanette”, that one may be in my Top 100 of 2021 - I haven't checked - but it reached #5 in January following “On” (#4) and “Luminous Spaces” (#2) last year.
