16 Boy In Space - Remember Me | 17-2-1-3-7-9-11-11-15-20-25-23-18-25-23-30-39-x

 

With a growing array of hits in my chart, many Boy In Space tracks fall into the midtempo or ballad category. That's obviously no bad thing when he's achieved a total of eight #1s, but that didn't stop Remember Me feeling like a breath of fresh air when it arrived in March 2021, its breezy vibe making for one of his best tracks so far. The second single from his debut EP FRONTYARD, Remember Me came out on a Thursday, immediately charting at #17 that week before rising to #2 in its first full week - perhaps a shock but it was against Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI's first collaboration, Unstable. Nevertheless, it overtook a week later and notched up a stronger chart run than its predecessor despite what looks like a slower start!

15 Conan Gray - Telepath | 1-2-5-7-8-13-13-17-14-…

 

The fourth and final appearance from Conan Gray in this year's EOY comes from his final release of the year. Telepath is unashamedly 80s inspired, with production that could easily have been on the same album as Blinding Lights and a chorus that puts Conan up there as one of the best and most exciting pop artists of the past few years. Unlike Overdrive and People Watching, which got unlucky in missing the top spot, Telepath earned an easy #1 peak, and it's well-deserved as it's his highest EOY position to date too! I can't wait for the parent album to finally arrive, assuming all of these singles are eventually going to appear on a full-length project (hard to tell these days). Either way, when is Conan finally going to get the support he needs to achieve a second hit? The material is there but the playlisting is not, come on Spotify!

Maniac was my favourite for a while (and its EOY position doesn't reflect how big it continued to be in 2020 for me) but Telepath could be challenging it these days!

It's not often that I listen to leaked songs these days - I find they either take away excitement for when the song finally drops, or they make me feel sad when a song never surfaces in its final, polished version. The Kid LAROI's SAME ENERGY was an exception, because it appeared on my Spotify Release Radar playlist months before its release. I was confused but I listened anyway, knowing full well it was likely an illegal upload. Sure enough, it was removed quickly, but not before I got a download copy...! I didn't give the song too much attention in case it did arrive properly one day, hence I didn't chart it at any point, but I was thrilled when SAME ENERGY was confirmed to be a part of the F*CK LOVE 3 tracklist in the middle of 2021. The final version isn't much different beyond a little polishing to the production, but that's fine with me - the catchy chorus remains and Laroi's vocals are at their best. At just 1:33, SAME ENERGY registers as the third shortest hit in my chart's history (behind Lil Xan's Slingshot, which is 1:30, and Sarcastic Sounds' say goodbye, which is just 1:27 and still to come in my EOY...!). It debuted at #2, becoming the third of seven songs blocked from a #1 peak by Laroi's own STAY. Though it had just two weeks top 10, SAME ENERGY has yet to leave my chart with 27 weeks top 40 and counting - it's certainly solidified itself as a big Laroi favourite.

13 Why Don't We - Love Back | 6-1-2-2-5-7-12-17-20-22-21-31-24-…

 

After scoring a record FOUR EOY top 10 hits in 2018, boyband Why Don't We haven't actually returned to the top tier since, and 2021 is more of the same in that regard. However, Love Back is their best attempt to get back there yet, becoming their best EOY position since their 2018 takeover. Released less than 9 months after their second studio album came out, Love Back is a roaring pop track with an anthemic, singalong chorus that was love at first listen. The production is bombastic and adds so much energy to the track, as do the boys' vocals, a particular shout out goes to Zach who leads the chorus. Lyrically it's one of my favourite WDW songs too - "I still got your halo hanging on the corner of my bed but when I looked closer, that shit was cracked" is an excellent opening line. Love Back debuted at #6 after a midweek release, and unsurprisingly became the boys' record-matching thirteenth #1 single the week after (a record they've now broken with Jonas Blue collaboration Don't Wake Me Up, which is bound to feature highly in next year's EOY at this rate!).

12 Sarcastic Sounds - say goodbye | 1-3-2-3-7-10-13-29-24-23-29-38-x

 

Prior to this song, I knew producer Sarcastic Sounds only through friend and regular collaborator Powfu. I knew pretty much nothing about him, in fact, until I discovered this song on a couple of playlists and gave it a spin. It was the introduction I needed to Jeremy Fedryk's own music, though it took a few weeks to grow. I added say goodbye to my playlist, played it once or twice, and basically forgot about it, but something clicked when I revisited it a few weeks later. The track shot straight into my chart at #1, ending Boy In Space's second run at the top with Sucker Punch, and immediately outcharting anything with Powfu's name also attached. Two more top 5 hits followed with Sarcastic Sounds as the lead artist, and it all started with this cute, ukulele-driven track with surprisingly deep lyrics about depression, which clocks in at just 1:27 - not only is it my shortest #1 ever, it's also the shortest track to make my top 40 across the 10 years I've compiled my personal chart for.

11 Alan Walker, K-391 & Boy In Space - Paradise | 13-1-1-2-3-5-8-9-14-18-17-20-20-27-23-…

 

Like most DJs in my chart, Alan Walker's had a bumpy history with a varied level of success. His biggest tracks, pre-2021, were top 5 hits Darkside and All Falls Down, while UK chart smash Faded reached my top 20. With five years passing since his one and only UK chart hit, I wasn't expecting Alan to make such a huge impact on my chart, but a Boy In Space collaboration sealed the deal with complete ease. Debuting at #13 on just one day of availability, Paradise was an instant smash, becoming the first #1 for Alan and fellow producer K-391, and Boy In Space's eighth chart-topper, and his fourth of 2021. The production feels true to what I'd expect from Alan, it's got a great drop, and Boy In Space's vocals elevate the track so much. I really wish I had one more spot in my top 10, because Paradise was one of the defining hits of the second half of the year, and it missed out by a whisker at the last hurdle! :(

10 DVBBS & Powfu - Losing Sleep | 1-2-4-5-19-16-17-19-24-26-30-30-22-15-10-15-25-27-29-31-35-x

 

I quite liked the only UK hit by producer duo DVBBS - Tsunami (Jump) alongside Borgeous and Tinie Tempah - but it never made my top 40, probably would've been just outside on a particular week. They didn't actually chart for me at all until four years later as part of a minor Cheat Codes hit. A top 10 hit on Johnny Orlando's I Don't followed in 2021, and their first as a lead artist followed next. Losing Sleep gained my interest through Powfu's involvement - of course, he's been one of the breakout stars in my chart over the past couple of years. A much more upbeat track than Powfu's typical releases, he slots in alongside DVBBS's excellent production like a glove. It debuted at #1 in my chart, becoming the first #1 for DVBBS and third for Powfu - his first in over a year. I sent Losing Sleep to BJSC, where it made the final, but naturally didn't fare quite as well as it deserved...! Powfu still has one more song to come, being one of three artists to feature twice each in my EOY top 10 this year.

I remember Losing Sleep from BJSC now I'm playing it - it was quite a nice song, can't remember whether I pointed it or not but Powfu works quite well on this song!

9 Powfu feat. Mila Moon & Jomie - tinted green | 2-3-6-11-12-20-22-23-23-16-6-16-21-23-28-32-34-33-38-38-40-29-…

 

Two for two so far with Powfu in this year's top 10! For the first time, the Canadian singer and rapper has two tracks in my EOY top 10, though neither track quite makes it as far up as breakthrough hit death bed (coffee for your head) managed last year. That's not to take anything away from tinted green, though. The track served as the lead single from Powfu's second EP of the year, entitled tell me your feelings and i won't tell you mine, and features producer Mila Moon (who I can't find much about on the internet) and singer Jomie, who's collaborated with Powfu a number of times before (notably on Jomie's Some Nights, a top 10 hit in my chart in 2020). tinted green is a different type of track for Powfu - he doesn't rap on this track, and his understated vocals go perfectly with the ethereal production. It's a standout track in his discography, and it's gutting that it didn't quite manage a #1 peak in my chart - of course, STAY kept it off #1 in its fourth week at the top, so the competition was tight, but the fact it's the highest track in my EOY not to make #1 speaks volumes!

8 Ulrik Munther feat. Maia Hirasawa - Jag älskar dig | 2-4-4-3-1-5-12-15-22-25-27-13-25-32-x

 

Amazingly, it's been a whole eight years since Ulrik Munther last featured in my EOY top 10. He took the top two tracks in 2013, with album track Heroes in Defeat (Change Your Mind) taking the #1 spot despite not being a 2013 release. Since then, though he's been an undeniably huge presence, he's only managed to court the EOY top 10 - Nån gång reached #11, while Before and Gloom. both managed #15 in their respective years. Ulrik's first 2021 release gave him the momentum to break that run, though. Jag älskar dig is based upon a track Ulrik's grandmother used to sing to him, and even features her sister, Ulrik's great aunt, singing said song throughout the track. It's an adorable love song, and guest vocalist Maia Hirasawa adds a great verse to a stunning song. It's full of heart, just like so many Ulrik tracks. Despite its title, the track is in English, though the hook features numerous different languages with their translations of the phrase "I love you." Jag älskar dig debuted at #2, behind Rita Ora's Bang Bang, though it finally made the top spot four weeks later, becoming Ulrik's tenth chart-topper and Maia's first.

7 The Kid LAROI feat. Mustard - STILL CHOSE YOU | 3-10-11-17-16-6-15-14-18-22-23-24-23-22-25-18-3-2-1-2-3-7-6-...

 

Only one artist in the history of my EOY charts has managed multiple songs in my top 10 in two consecutive years - Alyssa Reid featured at #2 and #7 in 2012 with Alone Again and The Game, and #7 and #10 in 2013 with Satisfaction Guaranteed and Running Guns. The Kid LAROI manages a slightly better record - he had three top 10s last year and another two this year, with this being the first to show up. Initially teased as the lead single from F*CK LOVE 3, STILL CHOSE YOU's release got delayed numerous times due to a sample clearance, before its original video (a team-up with the Lyrical Lemonade channel) was scrapped and STAY replaced it as the single. A fair decision of course as STAY is the better track and was such a gigantic hit, though STILL CHOSE YOU still had its moment to shine. A top 3 hit in my chart upon the album release (behind STAY and SAME ENERGY), STILL CHOSE YOU hasn't yet left my chart, with its infectious piano-led production courtesy of [DJ] Mustard and the catchy hooks present throughout. Lyrically, it's the perfect closer to the F*CK LOVE era, as Laroi announces that he's fallen in love again, so it made perfect sense that its music video was the formal end of the lengthy era. The video sent it back up my chart to a #1 peak, becoming Laroi's eighth #1.

6 Anton Ewald - New Religion | 1-2-2-6-11-14-20-21-24-34-40-36-x-39-…

 

I've been aware of Anton Ewald since his first Melodifestivalen appearance in 2013 but my interest in the show didn't fully arrive for a few years after that (beyond Ulrik Munther's general presence lol). Therefore, I didn't really give Begging nor Natural much attention and they didn't ever chart for me. I revisited them a lot in the lead up to Anton's 2021 Melfest return, though, and it gave me a lot of excitement. New Religion was an instant hit for me. Anton performed it on the second heat of the contest and it qualified to the final - which was great, but also annoying as it meant I had to wait 2 more weeks for the studio version's release (as per the rules for direct qualifiers)! It's got a huge chorus and production that's reminiscent of 5 Seconds of Summer's Youngblood and Why Don't We's Fallin' (Adrenaline). When it finally got its release, New Religion breezed to an easy #1, becoming Anton's first chart-topper and a track that continued to define my year. Anton had another top 10 afterwards, though DeLorean's chart run was short-lived, and third 2021 release That Should Be Me didn't do much for me. Nevertheless, New Religion is by far the highest Eurovision-related song in my EOY this year even if it didn't go on to win Melfest!

Telepath is so good - def agree he's had so many hit-worthy songs since Heather! :( For me, Jigsaw and Telepath are the best from his current era.

5 Benson Boone - GHOST TOWN | 1-1-1-2-3-5-8-7-…

 

The newest song in my EOY top 10 comes from a complete newcomer. Benson Boone came to prominence through American Idol, where he auditioned and later dropped out despite hype from both the judges and the audience because the show wasn't right for him. With a growing audience on TikTok, his debut single GHOST TOWN was released to much hype and made an instant impression, making the UK top 100. I heard the song a week or two later, with no knowledge of who Benson was, and I was immediately blown away by how good it was. Lyrically about a failing relationship, GHOST TOWN shows off Benson's amazing tone and strong songwriting skills against a piano backing track that lets the song speak for itself. Though several artists achieved their first chart-toppers in 2021, Benson was the only artist to reach the top with his very first single, and it's the highest debut single in one of my EOY charts since froy's sideswipe made #2 in 2018. I can't wait for Benson's new single ROOM FOR 2 which is due any time soon - it's not often I get so hyped for an artist based entirely off their debut single!
