30. BROCKHAMPTON ft. Danny Brown - BUZZCUT

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,173,000 (Platinum) Weeks on chart: 8

Chart run: 3 - 14 - 1 - 3 - 8 - 14 - 20 - 22 - X

This was a big hit for BROCKHAMPTON around halfway through the year, from their latest album ROADRUNNER, which has contributed a few other songs in this countdown. It’s energetic, a bit chaotic, but a banger without a doubt.

29. Hayley Williams - Inordinary

Chart peak: 03 Sales: 1,196,000 (Platinum) Weeks on chart: 8

Chart run: 5 - 11 - 3 - 8 - 11 - 15 - 13 - 17 - X

This album track from Flowers for Vases ended up becoming a big hit in its own right, out-performing the actual single My Limb for a few weeks. It’s an introspective song (as is the album as a whole) which sees Hayley reflect on her life and the people she’s met along the way.

28. Wolf Alice - Smile

Chart peak: 02 Sales: 1,288,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 7

Chart run: 3 - 5 - 2 - 2 - 18 - 25 - 38 - X

Following The Last Man on Earth, Wolf Alice went a tiny little bit rockier. Y’know, just a bit. The vocals are performed in a very distinctive way, and once you know the lyrics, it’s impossible to not join in.

27. Hayley Williams - My Limb

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,265,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 9

Chart run: 1 - 5 - 4 - 9 - 13 - 16 - 18 - 31 - 30 - X

The final song in this countdown from Hayley Williams now. My Limb is a dark rock song which sort of mirrors Simmer, her previous lead single, in just how brooding and atmospheric it is. It’s a song about the struggle to let go, a theme which runs throughout the album.

26. Willow ft. Travis Barker - t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,288,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 11

Chart run: 1 - 1 - 3 - 17 - 24 - 24 - 30 - 36 - 37 - 36 - 39 - X

Pop-punk made a pretty decent comeback this year, and my chart was no exception. Willow scored two weeks at #1, and while it dropped pretty quickly, this song stuck around for a long time. It’s high-energy and brilliantly angry.

25. Olivia Rodrigo - deja vu

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,426,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 7

Chart run: 1 - 2 - 12 - 9 - 17 - 24 - 27 - X

deja vu is my favourite Olivia song, thanks in part to the beautiful production which eventually builds into something almost psychedelic. When the song reaches its peak, with the lyrics almost shouted, it’s impossible not to feel something.

24. Lorde - Solar Power

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,288,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 12

Chart run: 1 - 2 - 3 - 1 - 4 - 5 - 8 - 16 - 24 - 31 - 34 - 39 - X

Solar Power was Lorde’s long-awaited return, and while not everyone was satisfied I certainly was. It’s a mellow song with echoes of George Michael and other 90s artists, which was apparently the intention, and although it’s relatively restrained throughout, it still builds into something decently anthemic.

23. Måneskin - ZITTI E BUONI

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,334,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 12

Chart run: 1 - 1 - 4 - 8 - 14 - 19 - 22 - 28 - 32 - 38 - 40 - 40 - X

The winner of Eurovision exploded onto my chart earlier this year, and scored four massive hits around the same time. Here’s another one; there’s still one to come. ZITTI E BUONI doesn’t sound like many other 2021 hits, so I’ve loved seeing it smash even if it’s been a bit overshadowed now!

22. Elio ft. Charli XCX - CHARGER

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,311,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 8

Chart run: 1 - 4 - 8 - 5 - 12 - 16 - 26 - 28 - X

Charli teamed up with rising pop star Elio to remix CHARGER early this year, and it became a big hit for me. Both artists’ sounds mesh together really well, and Charli’s take on the song turns it into something great.

21. PinkPantheress - Just for me

Chart peak: 06 Sales: 920,000 (Platinum) Weeks on chart: 10

Chart run: 6 - 10 - 12 - 16 - 23 - 26 - 28 - 32 - 36 - 39 - X

PinkPantheress has to be one of the most interesting artists breaking through right now, and this song is no exception. This song in particular draws on various 00s sounds to create a picture of being utterly obsessed with someone. Little details in the production (the repeated ‘me, me, me’ fading into the background, the car sound effects when she sings about driving) fill its short runtime with everything the perfect pop song needs.

deja vu is probably the Olivia song I'd be most likely to listen to right now if I wanted to! It hasn't suffered from overplay

Glad to see all 3 of Olivia’s singles here. What a perfect run! :cheeseblock:

My other favourites are ’tis the damn season, Angels Like You, Renegade, We’re Good and Save Your Tears

I really loved My Limb , Hayley's best solo song for me.

Idk if I could choose a fave, but My Limb would definitely be up there for me too!

It's time for the top 20! From here on I'll be giving each song a bit more focus, with artist histories and YouTube links for each.

20. Angèle - Bruxelles je t'aime

Chart run: 1 - 1 - 3 - 5 - 5 - 4 - 6 - 6 - 10 - 12 - 6 - [still charting]

Last year, Angèle had two major hits on my chart (solo track La thune and Dua Lipa collab Fever), and now she’s back with more. In a short period of time it amassed massive streams and reaches the year-end top twenty after just two months. Bruxelles je t’aime is a love letter to Brussels with a pulsing beat that makes you want to get up and dance!

Chart run: 15 - 3 - 2 - 4 - 8 - 17 - 20 - 25 - 31 - 37 - X

American Beauty has proven to be a real dark horse, storming into the top 20. It’s a quiet, restrained song which deserves to be listened to closely. Despite its summer release, now is the perfect time of year to bring it back out again.

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,357,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 8

Chart run: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 6 - 16 - 23 - 26 - X

MONTERO dominated the chart when it came out, and has proven to be a massive hit since. The iconic music video and subsequent live performances have shown that Lil Nas X really knows how to capture a moment and run with it, and he’s certainly done that here.

Lil Nas X's chart history:

Loving the Olivia appearances. Such a good run of singles from the album.

I loved Save Your Tears when the album was released but was completely over it by the time it started to take off. It's been played to death over the last year but I think I'll be back to loving it in a couple of years when a bit of time has passed.

Solar Power really stood out as something pretty unique-sounding in the charts. A great comeback single from Lorde.

Definitely agree on Olivia! I've managed to not overplay SYT myself so I still enjoy it a lot, hopefully you can get back there eventually too. And yeah, for me Solar Power wasn't the disappointment that some people found it!

Obviously, a masterpiece - I couldn't not bump it up a few places. Somehow, this really doesn’t feel ten minutes long - it’s a perfect length to tell the story exactly how Taylor intended. It's been really amazing watching this turn from a fan favourite into one of Taylor's biggest hits!

16. Caroline Polachek - Bunny Is A Rider

Chart peak: 02 Sales: 1,035,000 (Platinum) Weeks on chart: 12

Chart run: 7 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 - 7 - 6 - 17 - 25 - 31 - 39 - 37 - X

Bunny Is A Rider manages to take a fairly commercial sounding song (when the vocals first come in, it could honestly be by Mabel), and infuse it with Caroline’s distinctive offbeat style. The lyrics range from indecipherable (“Bunny is a rider, satellite can’t find her”) to bizarre (“dirty like it’s earth day”), and overall it’s a lot of fun even if I have no idea what she’s on about.

Chart run: 4 - 8 - 6 - 7 - 6 - 6 - 11 - 16 - 27 - 21 - X

If It Ain’t Me was a monster smash at the start of the year, and notched up six weeks in the top ten. It’s typical Dua, a la Break My Heart or Levitating, and I’m sure could’ve performed better than We’re Good had it been released as a single - I mean, it certainly did for me!

Dua Lipa's chart history:

2020 01 Physical (solo or with Gwen Stefani & Mark Ronson)

2020 07 SUGAR (with BROCKHAMPTON)

2020 01 Break My Heart

All Too Well, MONTERO and If It Ain't Me  all such great songs!

Hi, there!

Here are my picks of your lists so far:

81 Måneskin - I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE

57 Go_A - SHUM

39 The Weeknd - Save Your Tears

Giving Bruxelles je t'aime a listen now, sounding quite nice! Her voice is quite soothing on this song. I don't mind the Taylor song either (having not heard the original version), it works quite well as a single.

14. Sam Fender - Seventeen Going Under

Chart run: 30 - 33 - 28 - 26 - 7 - 4 - 9 - 8 - 15 - 21 - 28 - 38 - 39 - X

Off all the songs to take off in the UK this year, this is probably the one I’m most happy to see. Sam brings his usual style: a throwback Springsteen-esque sound with social commentary attached, which comes together to make a brilliant piece of music. Pop (or indie) justice at last!

Chart peak: 02 Sales: 1,472,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 8

Chart run: 2 - 3 - 5 - 10 - 10 - 8 - 15 - 20 - X

On Last Day On Earth, beabadoobee imagines what she’d do on her last day on earth (self explanatory, I know). You can hear The 1975’s influence pretty obviously, but clearly that’s not a problem because it’s the 13th biggest song of the year!

12. Pale Waves - Easy

Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,541,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 10

Chart run: 2 - 1 - 1 - 10 - 6 - 13 - 17 - 14 - 18 - 24 - X

Like the previous song, this is a nostalgic look at the past, which worked wonders for Pale Waves at the start of the year. It stuck around for a long time, and was slightly confusingly a hit alongside the identically-titled Easy by Rose Gray. However, this Easy won in the end, and finishes just outside the top ten.

Pale Waves's chart history:

2020 07 Change

2020 06 She's My Religion
