Ed Sheeran has officially made history today. His song “Shape of You” is the first song in history to reach a mammoth 3 BILLION STREAMS on Spotify.

Well done Shape of You. Although just had a look and Blinding Lights is now on nearly 2.7 billion so should overtake it in the not too distant future.

I make that about £9 million for Ed just from Spotify SOY royalties unless I’m mistaken?

3bn streams on Spotify translates to £10,320,000 but of course the label will take a big cut of that so its unlikely Ed will get as much as 9m off it.

Then it also depends on how many songwriters the song has, think it's 6 or 7 for Shape of you

6 according to wiki because the writers of No Scrubs are credited as well which it borrows from.

I honestly think Ed will get much, much less than 9 million. Probably less than half.

 

I think T.I made less than 1 million from Blurred Lines (which was almost as big as Shape Of You) altogether (we found out this after a court case a few years ago), and this was including YouTube, all other streaming services, downloads and physical sales, uses in TV shows, films and adverts, radio airplay, plays in clubs, bars, restaurants, shopping centres, songs which covered and sampled it, and so on. Pharrell and Robin Thicke made about 5 million each from the song from everything together. So I think Ed making anywhere close to 9 million from Shape Of You just on Spotify I think can't be possible, although he probably made 10 million+ from the song altogether.

 

I know a guy who was in a semi-successful band in the 80's, and he said he usually gets a 15,000 pound or so every year (he gets it all yearly in December) in his bank account, mostly from recurrent radio play.
