Girl Groups - BPI Certifications (Singles & Albums) [including duos, non-pop acts]

Featured Replies

Even then, there are plenty of singles pre 1994 that has far less weeks at #1 yet outsold it. It's all relative of course to the different eras in general but it is still seems quite shocking a song that spent 8 weeks at #1 has only sold 400k.

I know. Plus it doesn’t help that it isn’t featured on any of the big Spotify playlists. It isn’t featured on any 90s ones which isn’t right.

Great article! Clearly very unlucky for older groups which didnt get the streaming push.. Are you planning to do the same for boy bands?

also regarding Stay, 1992 was the lowest year in single sales right? The 7" was dying and the CD single wasn't that popular yet

just emphasizes that it's impossible to compare eras

Nope, debut album is Platinumx2, 2nd album is Platinum

Wow, didn’t realise Awake and Breathe went Platinum. Thanks.

I've been a bit tentative about opening a thread for boy bands because I wonder where to draw the line, it seems less clear cut than the female groups. For instance would acts such as The Beatles and Oasis be included, or would the list focus on boy bands more along the lines of Take That, One Direction etc? But then there's other acts who fall into a grey area such as McFly and Busted. If I included any male band I think the list would be so much longer than this females thread, so a bit of a daunting task!

I'd say boybands in the sense of Take That

otherwise it'd have to include almost all bands in the history of music

A good point! I'll try and get a thread together for acts who would be considered to be boy bands, but I'll include artists such as McFly and Busted who seem to fit the pop category even though they played instruments. But I'll leave out bands such as Oasis, Kings of Leon and artists similar to them. In the eventual thread I'm sure people can make suggestions for anyone I've missed out who they feel should be included.

By the way, I've updated the first pages of this girl groups thread! If anybody can think of artists I've missed out, or if you notice any mistakes, please let me know. :D

First Aid Kit could also be added!

and Tegan and Sara’s ‘Everything is Awesome’ is certified silver.

Thank you! I've added those in  (Somehow it completely escaped my attention in 2014 that Tegan and Sara achieved a Top 20 hit! :drama: )

As interesting as it would be, a certain user is just going to spam the thread with weekly requests for sales updates for a certain Irish boyband...

who?

This is very fascinating to read. Is there a list of the biggest selling girl band singles in one list? Who has the biggest selling single? Surely Wannabe?

There's this list on Official Charts - https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/t...5-years__26540/ - but it's quite old, from June 2019! I wish they'd do an updated list. Wannabe is definitely still the biggest selling girl group single!

I think Martha Reeves and the Vandellas have a few single certifications too and Alisha’s Attic have a few album ones.

Great list!

I had search for Alisha's Attic at the BPI website a while ago and found nothing

but now I tried again and they're actually there listed as Alishas Attic

and they actually have a Platinum album with Alisha Rules the World and a Silver one with Illumina

No certified singles for Appleton! Album = silver.

EDIT: I had forgotten BLACKPINK! I've now added them in.

  • 3 months later...

@-Jay- "Kiss My (Uh Oh)" is now officially Platinum!

Edit: Love Me or Love Me was updated to a Gold certification earlier this month, as well.
