The unexpected comeback of Willow (Smith) to the chart but took off a little too late in the year to make the cut

One of the most pleasantly surprising top 10 hits of the year! Not heard the live version before, the studio version is perfectly good for me, but both versions are fab.

One of the year's big EDM scene hits which eventually made its way into the UK top 20 too

(I do prefer the original but this remix was great to see be a smash!)

Another Anne-Marie song by request, a bit of an underperformance for Nathan Dawe but it did spend a few weeks in the top 40

Biography

Rag'n'Bone Man

As a bearded bloke with a great big voice trading under the unabashedly old-fashioned name of Rag’n’Bone Man, Rory Graham shattered the mould for music stars who broke out of in the 2010s. Then again, he was bound to break something given the power that pours out of him on “Human”, his debut single in 2016. The fusion of blues and hip-hop established the singer/songwriter—born in 1985 in the town of Uckfield—as one of the decade’s most unique new arrivals. It’s also an arresting showcase for the booming baritone that Graham himself was surprised to discover when he tried singing a Muddy Waters song at an open mic in the mid-2000s. Until then, he’d spent his teenage years rapping for hip-hop and drum ‘n’ bass crews in his hometown. His take on vintage blues—as well as soul and funk, two words he has tattooed on knuckles—still reflects his love of the more modern sounds and sensibilities provided by collaborators like producer Two Inch Punch a.k.a. Ben Ash on Rag’n’Bone’s 2017 debut album Human. With “Giant”—a 2019 match-up with Calvin Harris—Graham got another chance to show how his old-school gusto and soulful delivery can heighten a song’s intensity without overwhelming it or blunting its pop appeal. Even with all of Graham’s potential force, he knows the value of restraint, too. - Apple Music

P!nk

From the start, P!nk made it her business to be different: “Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears,” she sang on 2001’s “Don’t Let Me Get Me". “She’s so pretty/That just ain’t me.” Even as she rose in fame, she retained the whiff of an outsider—someone too frank, too unapologetic, too real for the show: not an icon, but a human being. As a girl, P!nk (born Alecia Beth Moore in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in 1979) loved Madonna and Janis Joplin, and tried her hand at opera, show tunes and punk rock. She started performing in clubs as a teenager, taking her name from Steve Buscemi’s "Mr. Pink” character in the Quentin Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs: quippy, edgy, ready for trouble. After the demise of her first group, Choice, which was briefly signed to LaFace Records, P!nk released her 2000 debut, Can’t Take Me Home, co-writing more than half the album’s tracks. A year later, she released M!ssundaztood, a leap forward both artistically and commercially, bridging the immediacy of club pop with songs that were confessional, genuine, frustrated and raw (“Family Portrait”, “Just Like a Pill”). That style paved the way for artists like Halsey, Kesha and just about every other major female pop star in her wake.

While her attitude was central to her appeal—whether she was tilting towards rock on 2003’s Try This or tipping back to dance on 2006’s I’m Not Dead—what really set her apart was her versatility: It was hard to imagine another singer capable of tackling something as bitterly sarcastic as “I Got Money Now” (“You don’t have to like me anymore/I’ve got money now”) and then shifting, with total credibility, to “Dear Mr. President” or “Who Knew”—who could be a punk one minute and an embracing, almost maternal comfort the next. She also set new standards as a live act, incorporating aerial dance and acrobatics into her extravagant stage shows. (Check out her performance of “Sober” at the 2009 VMAs for proof.)

In 2012, The Truth About Love marked another career high, tackling marriage, parenthood and the heft of Real Adult Emotions with a frankness that was funny, touching and refreshingly unsentimental (“It’s whispered by the angels’ lips,” she sang on the title track, “and it can turn you into a son of a bitch”). Speaking to Beats 1 host Zane Lowe about 2019’s Hurts 2B Human, she described the album’s title track in classic P!nk fashion—welcoming, human, but with an edge: “Everybody is going through something. And the point is, it’s all about your village, it’s all about your people, and the circle you create around you to get through all the bullshit in this world.” - Apple Music

Meh at this, I'm surprised it even landed here at #100 as it seemed to come and go very quickly.

All You Ever Wanted should've been in its place. This is just a bit boring.

This was a lovely surprise reaching the top 10 though I do think both artists are capable of better!
I quite liked Anywhere Away From Here - I know it wasn’t well received here and had the ignominy of being #10 on the reshuffle chart.

also general disclaimer that this isn't the FINAL FINAL EOY, it excludes the most recent week of sales so the OCC's version will be ever so slightly different.

Biography

When his life was cut short in the early hours of February 19, 2020, Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke was, at the age of 20, more famous than he’d ever been, yet nowhere close to where he was likely to end up. He exploded onto the scene in 2019 with “Welcome to the Party,” a song that somehow plays as enticing as it is menacing, exemplifying Brooklyn’s rising drill music scene at its sharpest. His voice across it—gruff and road-worn beyond his age—carries the delivery of a supervillain, daring his adversaries to try and stop the mayhem he has planned for the city.

Pop Smoke was from the far-flung Canarsie neighborhood, and his verses radiate a singular kind of Real Brooklyn energy. (A great deal of his "Welcome to the Party” video takes place in front of the long-standing jerk chicken staple Peppa’s.) His slang (“sturdy,” “dap me up”) was largely New York City-centric, which helped songs like “War,” “Christopher Walking,” and “Dior” reverberate quickly through, and beyond, the five boroughs. Fans worldwide got indoctrinated upon accepting his 2019 debut project’s invitation to Meet the Woo; a sequel, Meet the Woo 2, was released just weeks before his death. Pop Smoke worked well with the stars of his city, nabbing collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Bronx heartthrob A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and fellow ascending voices Lil Tjay and Fivio Foreign. He’d even have no problem setting his own tone on his Travis Scott collaboration “GATTI,” from the JACKBOYS project. Canarsie had Pop Smoke famously calling friends and associates his “woos,” but his enemies mostly went nameless, barely worth mentioning. As fast as things were moving for him, he couldn’t have had a second of spare time to give to anyone who didn’t believe. - Apple Music

Biography

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin once joked that the two biggest challenges in his life were trying to follow Radiohead and trying to follow Brad Pitt. The Pitt reference was personal, of course—Martin had been married to Pitt’s former fiancée Gwyneth Paltrow—but his self-assessment still felt remarkably apt: Coldplay isn’t just one of the most popular bands in the world, but also torchbearers for a kind of mainstream art-rock whose roots reach back through Radiohead, U2, Pink Floyd and even The Beatles. Yes, the music is anthemic enough to fill arenas—“Clocks”, “Speed of Sound”, “Paradise”, “A Sky Full of Stars”—but detailed and atmospheric, too, stretching the conventions of modern rock without ever losing the emotional thread.

Formed in London in the mid-’90s, the band debuted with 2000’s Parachutes. Seasons have changed—the arty experiments of 2008’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, the electro-rush of 2011’s Mylo Xyloto, the eclecticism of 2019’s Everyday Life—but the core of their sound has been consistent: Propulsive, uplifting, grand but vulnerable. In crowded bars and lonely bedrooms, the effect is more or less the same: At the end of the day, Coldplay came for the heart. - Apple Music

Higher Power is decent enough for late Coldplay but most likely won't be going down as one of their classics so this is a fairly respectable position for it

Biography

Lady Gaga

Some may dismiss pop as inauthentic. But for Lady Gaga—one of popular culture’s greatest, most extravagant creations—the inauthenticity is the point. No artist has more defiantly embodied that provocation this century than the one born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (in New York in 1986). Never wedded to the same image—one minute wearing a dress made of raw meat at the MTV VMAs, the next a coat of Kermit the Frog puppets on German TV—Gaga personifies pop’s surface obsessions while simultaneously upending them. In a sense, her creative identity had crystallized by age 21, having been a child pianist, aspiring actor, and burlesque performer. Each of these facets powered her career’s most distinct parts: the celebrity fascination of her first two albums, 2008’s The Fame and 2009’s The Fame Monster; the subversive layering of 2011’s Born This Way and 2013’s ARTPOP; the sincere reverence of 2014’s Cheek to Cheek, her jazz standards album with Tony Bennett; and the rootsier songwriting of 2016’s Joanne. If 2009’s “Paparazzi” reveled in the flashes, then “Born This Way” celebrated inner light: In translating her diffuse identity into world-conquering art, Gaga has become a beacon to anyone else who’s felt like an outsider. Her loyal following—a.k.a. Little Monsters—has affirmed a deep connection to her message of self-love and self-expression, despite pop’s fickleness and her chameleonic exterior. She played out a simpler version of her path to fame in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born: But while her character’s ascent was abetted by her lover, Gaga’s was all her own. - Apple Music

Ariana Grande

Armed with a mesmerizing, nimble soprano—and a vocal register often likened to Mariah Carey’s and Christina Aguilera’s—Ariana Grande began her career as a child star on Broadway and Nickelodeon before transforming into a pop and R&B powerhouse. Instantly recognizable thanks to her signature ponytail, cat ears, babydoll dresses, and breezy self-confidence, her slyly sexual personal brand has, like that of the Spice Girls before her, become an iconic image of young female power. But Grande is more than a symbol: Over the course of several albums and scores of hit singles—beginning with 2013’s “The Way” (featuring Mac Miler) through The Weeknd-assisted “Love Me Harder” and “Break Free” (featuring Zedd)—she has consistently outshined her male collaborators and deftly parlayed her stardom into activism. An LGBTQ advocate and outspoken feminist (“I’m tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY,” she tweeted in 2016), she uses her platform to confront issues like misogyny, sexism, homophobia, and bullying, spreading a message of love over all. Nowhere was this more clear than in May 2017: After terrorists attacked her concert in Manchester, England, killing 22 and injuring hundreds, Grande continued her tour. "Perspective changes your life,” she told Beats 1’s Ebro Darden. "You want to stay in the moment and try not to give into fear, because obviously the whole point of finishing the tour was being there for my fans. You want to set the same example and keep going.” And that she did: Her Max Martin-produced smash “No Tears Left to Cry,” an escapist dance-floor triumph released a year after the attack, sends a message of hope and healing, with a dose of hear-me-roar attitude. - Apple Music

Biography

“Everything about Lagos is me,” Wizkid told Apple Music in 2020. “That’s what shaped me, that’s what made me, that’s what inspires me every day.” In turn, Wizkid is shaping not just the sound of his city but the image of Nigeria worldwide. Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in Lagos in 1990, Wizkid hit the stage early, forming the group Glorious Five with church buddies at just 11. A decade later, he had regional success with his synth-kissed single “Holla at Your Boy,” which would appear on his 2011 debut solo album Superstar, but it was the lilting “Ojuelegba,” from 2014’s Ayo, that announced him as a force to be reckoned with. Afrobeats—the 21st-century fusion of styles like highlife and juju with house and UK funky—was on the rise, and for Wizkid, it was a case of right time, right place, right voice. Wizkid’s feature on Drake’s 2016 smash “One Dance” cemented his role as one of Afrobeats’ chief ambassadors, paving the way for 2017’s Sounds From the Other Side, his major-label debut. Assisted by global names like Ty Dolla $ign, Major Lazer, and Drake, the album embraced EDM and dancehall while further developing Afrobeats’ irresistibly airy grooves. It didn’t hurt that Wizkid’s blend of African and Caribbean styles coincided with reggaetón’s explosion, satisfying listeners seeking new sounds from a distinctly global perspective. In 2020, Made in Lagos fused more ideas still into his most cohesive whole and confirmed Wizkid’s role as a musical visionary—not just for African music, but for pop music worldwide. - Apple Music

Quite impressive for WYKBL making the Top 100 twice! Amazing what a consistent streamer the album proved to be.

Higher Power did very well to have the staying power to make the Top 100 after only being a mid table hit from a veteran act. It‘s really grown on me.

Essence has a really nice laid back vibe to it; nice to see that here too.

hmm, Essence is very middling background music, don't see what people thought was so special about it. and i've not even heard the Bieber version either.
