Another Love went viral on TikTok in the last year.

I’m sure it did, but I don’t follow such things and because of it’s ACR, it didn’t really impact on the chart from what I remember.

I think it just has got to the point now where I’m too old to pay attention to all this, I’m not exactly getting much joy from it.

I do think they should do a Top 200, if only to ensure there are more than 100 hits from the actual year in question!

That’s a point, to be fair. We were still getting them up to 2013.

'Another Love' did spend 10 weeks in the top 100 in 2021 at the height of its TikTok virality, peaking at #60. 'Riptide' on the other hand hasn't been in the overall top 100 since 2015 (but it is pretty much always in the top 200 on Spotify so I'm not surprised that it sneaks into the EOY top 100).

EOY charts are pretty scuffed in the streaming era whether or not they allow catalogue songs, I think the fact that releases from Q1 / Q4 of the previous year have such a huge advantage is a much bigger 'problem' to which there isn't really a clear 'solution'.

Isn't a calendar year always a bit arbitrary no matter how you look at it? Even in the 90s Heartbeat/Tragedy by Steps had its success divided into two calendar years (#34 and #2) so it was #2 hit of 1999 despite being released in November 1998.

Not sure where you got those positions for Steps. Heartbeat/Tragedy finished 12th in 1998 and 19th in 1999. Both positions reflect how it performed each year relative to the other hits.

And to argue a calendar year is arbitrary, couldn’t the same be said for a single week?

I don’t know, I imagine most of you think I’m just being silly being bothered by this but it was something I always enjoyed looking at and now my enjoyment of it is fading.

I just googled the YE charts, but clearly looked at the wrong ones (OCC doesn't have them on their site). Anyway, the point is, the YE chart has always been special concept as no single ever has just stopped selling on 31.12.

I guess the difference is that in the past the almost all songs did the vast majority of their sales within 10 weeks or so. If you look at a year end chart from a year in the 90s say there’ll very occasionally be something like Tragedy that was hard done by due to having sales split across 2 years but it’s very rare. Now everything released in the second half of the year is hard done by in the year end charts.

One alternative would be to publish a rolling 52 week chart, say every quarter. I don’t know if anyone other than chart geeks would really be interested though.

Would that not just benefit the tracks near the beginning of the tracking though. I think they should do an update on a end of year chart in the next summer or something. That way it would give songs released towards the end of the year a chance to sell but still count towards the year chart that they were released in.
