I definitely feel like the optimal number of #1s in a year is somewhere between this and the 12 we’ve had this year!
Yeh a lot of unrememorable songs got to No1 back then but the turnover is too slow still now, 20 would be perfect!

Yeah when the #1 is turning over at a rate of per fortnight or more you do end up with some dumb forgettable #1s but it has equally been very slow over the past few years due mostly to streaming becoming the dominant form of consumption.

Ideally i'd say between 20-25 per year is a nice middle ground.

unironically a far better time for the chart, yeah, some of these are unmemorable (not Twilight though, that was really something different and fun, I'm thinking more the random late career Ne-Yo and Cheryl songs that even their fans would probably say are far from their best) but it's a lot healthier when there's a fast turnover that reflects just how much new music comes out in a year.

2012 was a good year that aside, there were all-time classics like Gotye and Swedish House Mafia and even a timely meme song could get a look in with Gangnam Style, along with some B-tier music artists also getting their day at the top.

I see much better songs from a time when the charts hadn't been infected by TikTok yet.

Rita Ora getting 3 No.1s in a year. Love to see it!!

So few names who are still managing to churn out hits 10 years later.

36 is a lot of No.1s in a year. I agree around 20ish is a good number.

A lot of these hits were YouTube viral hits though..... Which was a similar phenomenen

This is nowhere near a plausible comparison.
