It's a new year, and a review of the year I've never revisited in any shape or form, including never playing all those tapes and VHS videos I recorded, so there'll be a lot of "no don't remember that one" and many of them I wont have heard for 30 years. So we start of 1992 with a classic 60's song entering at 1 - no apologies, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore is the greatest version of a Four Seasons song, bar none, and The Walker Brothers widescreen, emotional production has the epic Scott Walker's vocals at the centre. I have always loved this song, but from the 90's on it developed into adoration as I became convinced it was, and is, one of the greatest records of all-time, and a song I turn to when I need to get some stress emotion out of my system. I cry buckets if I singalong to it.

Back in the '92 scene Wet Wet Wet make my top 10 with a bound, Goodnight Girl becoming only the 3rd single to do that since their debut great Wishing I Was Lucky, though I would say it hasn't aged as well as I thought it might. New at 10, The Beautiful South get a 2nd top 10 with Ol' Red Eyes Is Back, not one of their biggest hits in the UK charts, but it follows A Little Time into my top 10. At 14, Marc Almond follows-up Scott Walker's Jacky with the wonderful My Hand Over My Heart, which was criminally just a minor hit, when the record is heartbreaking and touching in the tradition of Scott Walker. Bit of a theme going on! Marc's 11th year of charting, since Tainted Love topped my charts.

Donna Summer returns with another Magic song I don't recall, so that's malcolm McLaren and Work That Magic. I must play them! Enigma have a 3rd entry with Principles Of Lust, ABC Say It for a decade of charting, Snap! have Colour Of Love, Danii Minogue is back with a track I recall hazily, Mariah Carey Can't Let Go, and I haven't heard that in decades, Bonnie Tyler recharts her 1985 smash Holding Out For A Hero, Shaft revamps the kids TV show theme to Roobarb & Custard for a dance entry, and Michael Jackson gets an early debut for album track Heal The World, by virtue of being listed on my playlist for that week - album tracks were still banned by my chart rules, but it would have been top 10 easily if I was.

John, I selected this year as a start for 90s "Gražios Dainos" charts, will post the first hitlist very soon, but obviously it's very different in compasion with yours.

Only one song from your top 75 was included in my top 20 + three others (Those Were The Days, Fairytale Of New York, Holding Out For A Hero) were hits in the previous years.

Hi Alex, I checked out your charts and quite a few I charted too, just not in the same exact weeks, I'd say your top 20 is 50% I like or love and 50% I've never heard of

12th January 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for the 1966 classic from the Walker Brothers as Marc Almond makes it two top 3's in a row with My hand Over Your Heart at 3, and the highest new entry at 7 from Shakespear's Sister, their 2nd top 10 since You're History went top 3 in 1989, though Siobhan has loads of others as a Nana. Stay is an epic ballad, and an instant "woah" moment on first hearing. Blue Pearl grab a second top 10, ABC rocket into the 20 for the first time in 5 years, Say It! Enigma make it 3 in 12 months, and New Kids On The Block get a 4th, and highest peaking after Hangin Tough, Right Stuff and Tonight all peaked at 20.

The Blessing remix their 1991 flop and return again with Highway 5 at 22, Kylie covers classic 1970 Chairmen Of The Board's Give Me Just A Little More Time at 28, and Kiss smack into the 30 with their Argent cover. New at 33, Cicero debuts with Love Is Everywhere, sounding a little like a cheesy Eurodisco version of Pet Shop Boys. Most likely due to Pet Shop Boys co-producing, Neil helping on backing vocals, and Cicero being signed to their Spaghetti record label.

At 54, Bjork debuts with Hit. OK, it's The Sugarcubes, but she's very much there. Voice Of The Beehive are new at 60, with the minor hits still coming, Perfect Place, and Buffy Sainte-Marie returns for the first time in 20 years to my charts, with the fabulous Big Ones Get Away, political and relevant as ever in 2022 as it was 1992. Still charting in my charts in the 21st century with a song she recorded aged 75, and still fab and still fighting for First Nation rights in Canada and elsewhere aged 80-odd.

Ce Ce Peniston is back with another jaunty House dance number, We Got A Love Thang, Crystal Waters is already in Megamix territory, not usually a good sign for a long-term career, and Quo enter with Rock Till You Drop. And that has proved to be an actual mission statement for the much-missed Rick Parfitt and still-touring/recording Francis Rossi. My playlist oldies that week featuring 50's ballad doo-wop stylee hits. It can't be nostalgia, as I wasn't born, so it's just cos I like them and was in a 50's groove.

Hi there John!

Nice to see "Stay" debut in your top 10, I also like the big gains for "Stars" and "Can't Let Go" and the debuts for "We Got A Love Thang".

Great chart!

I rediscovered "Do You Feel Like I Feel", possibly it's my favourite Belinda song now (some years ago it was her UK # 99 flop "Blue Period" with Smithereens).

Her main hits didn't age well for me, but "Live Your Live Be Free" era had very nice singles selection, need to find some free time for listening a whole album.

"Everybody Move" is too dance, but Cathy's time will come in 1997 year.

Hi Alex, sorry for the delay replying been a bit hectic so not got round to 1992 charts a while!

Do You Feel is a goodie, Live Your Life too, she still was doing good stuff in 1991/2, Belinda :) Cathy Dennis, was 1997 the year she did Waterloo Sunset? Nothing springs to mind apart from that :o

cheers! B-)

It's a second number one in a row for Marc Almond, as Trevor Horn helps him to a gorgeous 4th chart-topper in total, including Soft Cell material. My Hand Over My Heart deserved to be bigger. Shakespear's Sister get a first number 2 as Stay outdoes the peak of 3 for You're History, and Cicero shoots into the top 10 and his love is everywhere, with a bit of Pet Shop Boys assist. @nd time round The Blessing get that top 10 slot for Highway 5, and Ce Ce Peniston rockets from 69 to 25 with her Love Thang.

Highest new entry is from The Wonder Stuff, this time with Kirsty MacColl on a 2nd chart feature, as they usher us in to the Cheap seats (my usual place) at 32, and The Stone Roses debut at 40 with Waterfalls, for a bit of an Indie new entry vibe. Talking of vibes, Paula Abdul's Vibeology is not as good as the non-single that went top 5 here, but it's in at 57 anyway. The Pasadenas cover 1973 Sound Of Philadelphia hit I'm Doin' Fine Now, as done originally by New York City, it's new at 43. There's a C+C Music Factory cover of U2, a dreary Curtis Stigers somehow making my charts, and a forgettable Karyn White. It's forgettable because I don't remember how it goes, as opposed to a quality comment.

26th January 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for Marc Almond, still holding off Shakespear's Sister at 2 as Zuchero gets a second top 10, and Randy Crawford gets her first since 1980's One Day I'll Fly Away which peaked at 6. Kiss get their one and only top 10 thanks to a brilliant 1973 Argent song written by Russ Ballard. It's difficult to ruin but Kiss gave it a good old go. The Sugarcubes get a top 20 with Hit, but Bjork will be along before too long with many more hits.

The Osmond Boys are the highest new entry at 23, showing I was really getting nostalgic for the 70's - not only Kiss in the top 10, but the sons of some Osmonds make it another generation of chartmaking Osmonds. It's hard to know which Osmond brother they belong to as they all have about 134 kids. I havent heard this record in 30 years. It's very 90's forgettable guitar boyband with an OK hook. At 34, the classic Movin' On Up enters for the gospel-tinged Primal Scream, a radio staple since. Buffy Saint-Marie's brilliant The Big Ones get Away makes the 40, and so do James, a bit frustrated at not being higher.

I Wonder Why Curtis Stigers leaps to 40, cos I got bored with it very quickly is my hazy recollection, but the charts don't lie! Simply Red pop in before Stars has yet to leave with For Your Baby at 39, and at 51 Jah Wobble is back, one of many I barely remember to enter this week: Visions Of You, with the featuring of Sinead O'Connor the most memorable bit of the decent track. Garland Jeffreys never really made it in the UK, but Hail Hail Rock 'n' Roll was one I recall liking, and it's not a rock record, it's 90's souldance with the Soul II Soul shuffle beat.

Daisy Chainsaw debut with Love Your Money, and it sounds exactly as you'd expect, shouty female vocal over buzz-guitar punky gothrock. Yes, I can like loud, annoying music too! Digital Orgasm sounds like a rave track, just about to play to confirm if Running Out Of Time is. Yes it is, and it's quite beat-heavy and girlie vocal, very 1992 and very dull quite quickly. Genesis I Can't Dance I don't need to play, as it's memorable for being very ploddy. New at 72, but No Son Of Mine is much better. Isotonik also sounds like a rave track I've forgotten. It is, and I haven't missed owt. Just to underline the new entries this week, we finally have Rubbish from Carter USM. Ironically, it's not rubbish. And it's better than most of the tracks immediately above it that are new entries.

2nd February 1992

It's 3 weeks on top for Marc Almond's under-rated and forgotten My hand Over Your Heart, as Pet Shop Boys get Cicero a number 3. I'm a PSB fan, so a trifle over-rated I think. Wet Wet Wet get their biggest chart hit since Wishing I Was Lucky peaked at 4 5 years earlier, still their first and best record, but Goodnight Girl is a step up on everything in between. The KLF are back with an OTT revamp of What Time Is Love which I love more than the original. Such great fun, such epic records, such a tragedy that they called it a day after this single, new at 13.

Primal Scream movin' on up into the top 20 with leaps and bounds, ditto Buffy Sainte-Marie's finest moment, The Big Ones Get Away. This weeks oldies debuting include Dr.Hook's 1979 number 2 When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman at 23, a DNA revamp of Sharon Redd's 1981 club hit Can You Handle It at 28, The Valentine Brothers' original version of Money's Too Tight To Mention at 60 a first-time charter, as is the 1977 Punk pop minor classic Another Girl Another Planet from The Only Ones at 68. That leaves Michael Jackson starting to mine the new album for hit singles as Remember The Time enters at 33, Europe crying at 65 6 years on from The Final Countdown, the under-rated Definition Of Sound at 70 with Moira Jane's Cafe, 2 Unlimited entering the Twilight Zone at 72, and The Prodigy new at 75 with Everybody In The Place.

9th February 1992

It's a climb of 14 to give Primal Scream a first chart topper since Loaded went top 10 in 1990, with the fab gospel vibes of Movin' On Up. That keeps Madness off the top spot as the revived It Must Be Love, the Labi Siffre cover, enters at 2, still great fun 11 years on. A film, meanwhile, helps The Temptations 1965 Motown classic My Girl to debut at 5, written by Smokey Robinson and covered by many, but none as good as the original.

James keep the top 10 run going as Born Of Frustration is up to 10, ahead of a plethora of new entries and a bit of a chart clearout, the highest new track enters at 32 for Tears For Fears and Laid So Low, ironically kicking out Feel So High, Des'ree plummeting. That's chart balance. Michael Bolton gets another decent single shock - Steel Bars new at 33. At 34, teenage Fanclub debut the terrific and under-rated What You Do For Me, as Texas drop in at 37 with Alone With You, one of their less-remembered songs, but me still supporting them as I do now, regardless of how they do chart-wise.

Massive Attack return at 38 with a cover of the 1974 William De Vaughan soul classic, Be Thankful (For What You've Got), which itself was inspired by Curtis Mayfield, and Timmy Thomas' 1972 classic Why Can't We Live Together, still hanging on in the chart - albeit the 1990 added-Martin-Luther-King-Jr remix that is still unavailable due to copyright issues. Tina Turner has a Love Thing, and 23 years of chart hits, Sounds Of Blackness are looking Optimistic, one of Bryan Adams' best ballads drops in at 60, Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven.

And down the bottom end of the chart, Take That debut with Once You've Tasted Love, and I can honestly say I don't recall charting it so early in their career, but there you go new at 72 ahead of Dream frequency's Feel So Real, a minor Julia Fordham return at 75 for 4 years of chart action, and as they top my Playlisted non-chart tracks of the week, Michael Jackson's 2 album tracks that I most rated at 76 and 77, Will You Be There and Heal The World eventually became singles (and big hits) but he'd opted for Remember The Time. Had I allowed album tracks, both of them would be higher than that, likely top 5, this week.

Some great songs in there at the moment, love the current #1 and that's probably Madness' best song new at 2.

I especially love that Tears For Fears track, I think it may actually be my favourite of theirs and it deserves so much more than being tucked away on that one best of.

Also just spotted that Teenage Fanclub track, another good choice!

Thanks dandy :) Glad you approve of Primal Scream & Madness, TFF I'd sort of forgotten that track (I never bought the hits CD as I had the hits on vinyl or CD already for the most part), and Teenage Fanclub is a goodie - don't worry about the chart drop, I obviously didnt get to hear it the following week, but it'll go back up. I eventually bought the CD single in a bargain bin and got into it a lot more. :)

16th February 1992

It's up to the top spot for a belated 4th number one for Madness, 11 years after It Must Be Love peaked a bit lower than 1. Fellow oldie The Boxer also returns to give Simon & Garfunkel a second run in the top 5 23 years after I first charted it, aged 11. Another oldie, from 1991, is also back for another go, Crucified being big in Europe and not in the UK for Army Of Lovers, and top 10 again here. Buffy Sainte-Marie gets her first top 10 since 1971's Soldier Blue, with her fab The Big Ones Get away.

In a busy week for new entries, Gary Moore's bluesy Cold Day In Hell is an instant top 40 13 years on from Parisienne Walkways, Martika returns with some Coloured Kisses, and Everything But The Girl join the throng of covers of the 50's classic Love Is Strange, as they do a pretty good version of Mickey & Sylvia's still-charming original. Mike + The Mechanics get a second chance, Mike being 8 places behind himself in Genesis sitting at 50, that's just greedy. Diana Ross has a swift follow-up, ditto Amy Grant, and Naughty By Nature, while English band Pele debut Megalomania.

Inspiral carpets are Dragging Me Down, in a good way, Ronnie Jordan says So What, PM Dawn keep their run running with Reality Used To Be A Friend Of Mine (I think that's true for all of us these days), and Chic are back for a 3rd decade, with a spot of Chic Mystique over 20 years early for the Nile Rodgers 10's revival. I like to think I'm ahead of the times, but actually I'm just a lot more faithful to fave old pop stars than the fashion-chasing singles chart is. I don't care if something or someone is out of fashion with the Sound Of The Moment - even if I'm very into that Sound Of The Moment.

2 and a bit months behind but hoping to catch up...

23rd February 1992

It's yet another oldie on top as the CD-single reactivated The Boxer tops my chart 23 years late for Simon & Garfunkel, a song I know every single word to. If only I could sing in tune. The KLF climb 10 and threaten a 4th chart-topper in a row with the What Time Is Love revamp that I prefer to the original hit version. Buffy Sainte-Marie gets a top 5 for the first time in 21 years, when Soldier Blue did the trick. Gary Moore climbs into the top 10 with a Cold Day In Hell as Blues undergoes a 90's revival, and Jacko sneaks a top 10 with Remember The Time under-performing by usual MJ standards.

Highest new entry is Julian Cope, 11 years on from Reward peaking at 2 for Teardrop Explodes, as he sings Lover times 3. At 34, ex-Spandau Tony Hadley has a solo entry for Lost In Your Love, and Tone is into his 12th year of charting. Rozalla flies back with another dance anthem, U2 drop an absolute classic ballad anthem in One, and Crowded House enter with their most-famous song Weather With You, the former also 11 years into the hits, the latter 12 years including Split Enz.

That leaves The Troggs unexpectedly staging an album comeback Athens Andover, and single entry at 70 with Don't You Know, actually their debut in my charts as their career predated my charting years. The album title refers to Andover, Reg Presley's UFO-cornfield-chasing home in the UK, and Athens Georgia where they recorded the album along with some local fans, REM, cough. River City People return, and Opus III insist it's a fine day.

1st March 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for 1969's Simon & Garfunkel classic, The Boxer, and Ian McCulloch gets his first top 10 in a few years and 10 years since Echo & The Bunnymen first popped up. Bryan Adams gets his biggest since THAT record topped the chart, top 20 this week as is Everything But The Girl's cover of Love Is Strange (previously covered by Echo & The Bunnymen) 8 years on from Each And Every One hitting 2 in my charts, and Massive Attack take Be Thankful into the 20 16 years on from William De Vaughan's fab original doing the same.

New entries include The Lightning Seeds returning at 51 for a proper run of hits 3 years after Pure didn't do that, with The Life Of Riley, that football backdrop fave. I wonder if they'll do a proper footie record.... Alison Limerick keeps a run of dance tracks going, Brand New Heavies keep a run of jazzfunk dance tracks going, and Pearl Jam announce they are Alive and part of the Seattle grunge scene too. Jeff Beck & Rod Stewart get together for a cover of Curtis Mayfield's soul classic 20 years since they first had a chart hit together, with a reissue of their 1968-ish flop I've Been Drinking. Zoe's back again, and so is Seal with Violet.

Playlisted oldies of that week

1 RIVER DEEP MOUNTAIN HIGH Ike & Tina Turner

2 LODI Creedence Clearwater Revival

3 SAND Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood

'My Girl' is a classic, did that song at Uni back in the day. 'Stay' still going strong in the top 10 there as well, such a classic. Strange to think the scary girl in the video is also a member of Bananarama
