42 - Gala - Freed From Desire

17th best seller of 1997

Chart Run

4-3-4-2-3-5-5-9-13-20-24-32-42-65

This song is one of most fruitful examples of misheard lyrics in music. There's two main lyrics that have given rise to hilarious misinterpretations.

The first is the verse has been variously heard as

My Doctor's got no money

his God is Taiwanese

My Lover's Got Pneumonia,

He's got his trumpet leaves

My father's got no money

He's got his trampoline.

My love has got no money

He's got a stronger leash

My love has got no money

He's got his own disease.

My love has got no money

He's got his Stromboli's.

My lover's got my money

It's in his dungarees.

Then the chorus....

Freed from Desire

Minor sex and securified

Freed from desire

Bob Monkhouse is crucified.

Free from desire

light incense and purify

Free from desire

minor senses Uruguay

The immovable I'll Be Missing You from Puff Daddy and Faith Evans got in the way of this securing a number 1 hit for Gala.

Also… Swamp Thing was a huge favourite of mine, like the more credible Rednex :D

Since myself and Dr Blind did that 90s dance thread, I've really grown to like Cotton Eye Joe.

Aerosmith another later riser but gues that was due to the film release, reminds me to check that thread of climbing singles between 1995-2006!

To misquote dandy, yes thanks goodness for five.

Of these Black Velvet, No Mercy both topped my charts, and The Boy is Mine, Dr Alban, Aerosmith, were great

Oh I don't mind it for what it is either, it's fun!

I liked the R Kelly track as a song in its own right but yes good it didn't get to no.1 all considering. Remember that No Mercy chart run as insanely long back at the time whereas it would be relatively short lived nowadays!

Songs about freedom have always been popular. They were particularly inspirational in mid-90s dance music.

And if you'd like to consider what the grumpy, elder states men of Buzzjack thought of this slice of euphoric rave in 2008, then step this way

Celine Dion was in the middle of her 75 weeks at number one with Think Twice when this nipped at her heals.

Love Set You Free.

It's perfect 90s dance!! One of those songs you can guarantee to be used in any comedy tv series about the 90s.

Can't remember if I name checked it in my own (unpublished) novel that is actually set in 1995!!

40 - Luther Vandross & Janet Jackson - The Best Things In Life Are Free

17th best seller of 1992

Chart Run

Another song about things that are free.

It seems rather light weight now. I seem to remember liking it a lot more than I do, on listening to it this evening.

Stuck behind Snap!'s Rhythm is a Dancer for a fortnight, but biggest hit for both singers.

The Best Things in Life are Free (despite not being that great I agree) also made no. 7 in 1995 but guessing that won’t be taken into account in this ranking? It’s one of those tracks I never know what the original is and what is the remix as so many versions are out.

Set you Free was great especially that thunderstorm sound at the beginning. Shame their other hits included some very rubbish covers.

I hadn’t realised that the Luther & Janet track had been that big, surprised to see it in the 20 best sellers of 92
Looks like most 17th placed songs in their respective years didn't reach #1. I Try by Macy Gray would have just missed out on this list as it was the 20th best seller of 1999 despite its #6 peak, though another song which peaked even lower should feature quite high up.
The Best Things In Life Are Free was absolutely murdered by overplay by my local radio station. Freed From Desire and Set You Free are great.

I Try would have been down in 65th place.

39 - Diana Ross - When You Tell Me That You Love Me

17th best seller of 1991

A simply magnificent song from D-Ross that was stuck in the number 2 spot firstly behind George Michael and Elton John's Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me. After she overcame that, Bohemian Rhapsody '91 (which no one ever called it :D) steamrolled in and outsold it by a factor of 4 in Christmas week.

Perhaps if the artwork was less awful it might have sold a few more copies.

38 - Technotronic - Get Up (Before The Night Is Over)

Completely superfluous follow up to the earth-shaking Pump Up the Jam. Plenty of buyers were interested. However, Sinead O'Connor wasn't have any of it and sold double.

It's commonly known that this was part of the first ever reggae top 3 with Shaggy and Shabba Ranks. It also had to settle for second place behind The Bluebells' Young At Heart for a fortnight too.

Looking back, he was very much the Vanilla Ice of reggae.

I guess Im in the minority but prefer Get Up to Pump up the Jam
