It's not Eskimo Callboy. BOO.

Eros Atomus – Alive

Felicia Lu – Anxiety

Maël & Jonas – I Swear To God

Emily Roberts – Soap

Nico Suave & Team Liebe – Hallo Welt

Malik Harris – Rockstars

5 average pop songs and some incredibly embarassing German language thing.

Hallo Welt, wie geht's dir kill me

admittedly 'Anxiety' is slightly better than the rest so I pick that one.

Rockstars and Anxiety could do ok, i.e. 19th instead of 25th. Both are pretty decent.

The others all scream 'Germany, I'm sorry, zero points'. Soap is passable, the other three are not good at all. I'm amazed this was the best six of nearly 1,000 received submissions.

Eskimo Callboy very publicly confirmed they had submitted this and now, quite understandably, they're trending in Germany because this is LIGHT YEARS ahead of those 6.

I don't know if they couldn't get through on a technicality or the selectors just really don't want to win or they're the wrong kind of people to be choosing this and deselected it because they don't like the genre but this'd have had far more of a chance.

Wow! It's not massively my thing but yeah that could have been a potential Eurovision top 10 for them and a TikTok powered hit.

I guess there's as much rot in the German selection committee as there is in the UK one. Both countries have been peddling beige radio pop for years and years now.

None of those songs seem like they'd get 12 points OVERALL let alone from one country lmao, christ they are as bad as us at this
“I Don’t Feel Hate” may be many things, but I wouldn’t say that it’s beige radio pop!

That's true, that's their equivalent of our Electro Velvet I guess.

To be fair actually, Violent Thing could have done ok for them too.

But for the most part, over the last decade the offerings from both us and Germany have been serviceable but dreadfully boring filler.

Violent Thing was and still is an absolute banger. Gutted that never got a proper chance to strut its stuff.

This talent field, or lack thereof, is representative of the general messiness of the process. Basically the show is the 4th of March but voting starts on the 28th BUT only on the websites of the radio stations: Antenne Brandenburg, Bayern 3, Bremen 4, hr3, MDR Jump, NDR2, SR1, SWR1 and WDR2. (Looks like the first is part of rbb which is the regional public broadcaster for Berlin and Brandenburg, so I’ll be voting there)

Hallo Welt is ja echt peinlich. Thankfully not the kind of German language rap that Germans actually go for. If this was more in the vein of Capital Bra then this would be in with a big chance but as it is, I’d write it off.

Rockstar, it’s alright but doesn’t set me on fire tbh. He’s opened for a lot of major artists so he should be a competent performer and he was the first German artist to grace the Spotify billboard on Times Square! (Tho Spotify Tag him as German-American he was German born and raised). He is currently scheduled to Perform at a hole in the wall in Berlin Freidrichshain the day after the ESC Final. In case you were curious of his chances, he scheduled his tour for may….

Soap. Not terrible but doesn’t really go anywhere. Again should be a competent performer but also has actually had a hit with a cover of Bitter Sweet Symphony. I say hit. It was 53 in Germany and spent 13 weeks on the chart but did better in Austria peaking at 33 with a 21 wk run

I Swear To God. Acceptable but also a probable winner. They came 3rd in The Voice of Germany in 2020 on team Nico Santos (who has a massive, and young, fanbase that can be mobilised for the online voting). If I was a betting man, I’d bet on this one being picked

Alive. Pretty dull. He came 4th on the Voice in 2018 which, fun fact, was the year that 2020 rep Ben came runner up.

Anxiety. Probably my fave of the 6 options. I’m quite enjoying it. She failed in her quest to be Germanys rep in 2017 and has done basically f*** all of note since then.

Id like Anxiety but I’m expecting I Swear To God based on more recent Voice appearances and being able to Call on Nicos fans for the online voting

Why schlager acts don't want to participate in Eurovision pre-selections in German speaking countries ?

Edited by Last Dreamer

Because Schlager is considered a joke in DACH and it’s considered uncool and deeply cringe. It doesn’t get mainstream radio play and it is heavily looked down upon - especially by the younger generations. It is still popular in some demographics in Germany but not in the demos that ARD Are targeting with their radio stations or ESC

My ratings:

1. Anxiety (7/10)

2. Rockstars (6/10)

3. Alive (6/10)

4. Soap (6/10)

5. I swear to god (5/10)

6. Hallo Welt (4/10)

Overall rating: 5.67/10

Top 5 rating: 6/10

This selection is so bang average... I question whether these 6 songs are the best songs in the pile and I think there are quite a few that are overlooked. That being said, I don't think any song here would do well in Eurovision bar maybe Anxiety.

Cast my vote for Anxiety with Antenne Brandenburg! This goes down tomorrow so let’s see how badly the German public f***s this up

'Rockstars' won:

I suppose it's not the worst that could have been chosen and the spoken word part makes it at least slightly interesting.

It's very 23rd place, not in a way that it's terrible but in a way that it's fine but wouldn't stand out that much.
Embarrassing.

It's... acceptable.

It has the same vibe as NF - Time which was okay at best so I'm not entirely sure I'll go back to it in 6 months time but for now it's... nice

Poor Emily Roberts forgetting the lyrics of her song "Soap" halfway through the performance :(
