The AI version of Leanne's child made my stomach drop in yesterday's episode, it's horrible but that's the point and it just goes to show how brainwashed Leanne has become by Rowan and his cult. Jane Danson is delivering a great performance as always, but the star of this storyline has been Georgia Taylor, who smashes everything she's given as Toyah - one of the show's biggest assets.

Been great to see Abi at the forefront of the show the last few weeks too, Sally Carman is the biggest asset the show has and she's been depressingly underutilised for a little while now.

Gail :( I really hope they do Helen Worth justice with her departure storyline, Gail is one of *the* biggest soap icons and arguably Corrie's most famous character, so they better come up with something fitting.

They are destroying Steve McDonalds character with the awful attempts at comedy and the cult storyline with Rowan and Leanne is as enjoyable as a toothache.
A massive clear out is needed for this show to become even remotely watchable again, sadly. The Leanne stuff is completely ridiculous.

Is the current era of Coronation Street it's worst?

I'm trying to remember if there was a time it was ever in the state it currently finds itself.

Pretty awful news here (i'll spoiler tag it for those who don't want to know but the news is now out there)

Debbie Webster is being killed off :(

The storyline is set to start early in 2025 and she's going to be diagnosed with Dementia what will ultimately lead to her exit.

Genuinely no idea what they are thinking here. A popular character and one of the few good ones right now. Really hope it was the actresses decision and she wasn't axed but i think it's the last thing corrie needs right now especially so soon after Pauls terminal illness story.

Oh that's just depressing, when you think the show couldn't get anymore miserable with Lauren's face always sulking around we now get this.

Edited by Simon.

If the storyline is done well it could be very good as we saw a few years ago in Emmerdale, its obvious they will be looking for the same impact but im disappointed its with the character they have chosen as i actually like her.

Well that was a crap last episode for Gail! Such a legendary character, thought they would give her a big finale rather than just driving off in the back of a car.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this was axed following the anniversary. I’ve read that they’ve got a few characters going on guest contracts similar to Tracey atm, Evelyn soon and others to come. I guess it makes sense that they are using new younger characters so much as they cost much less to pay than an established actress like Maureen Lipman or a long standing character like Helen Worth’s Gail. I’m wondering if they will do something like Hollyoaks and have major cut backs, the cast is huge and certainly big enough to do that and it might actually work?

I’ve not watched properly in a few years but everything I’ve seen online just sounds worse and worse, and it was an absolute travesty how they wrote Gail out with such little fanfare. That horrific AI child was the nadir for me though

I cant see that happening, the show just needs some tlc, the current producer just doesnt seem to be able to handle the show, im not an avid viewer but did tune in more regularly for Gails exit which i honestly think was terrible, it all felt totally out of sync, there was no build up, it felt very unbelievable for the most part and Gail was just so out of character for the whole lot of it, even the part towards her final scene they have David talking to Kit taking away the focus from Gail and the scene just felt wrong.

ITV have budget issues and both Corrie and Emmerdale have to make cut backs, Emmerdale have already axed a few characters and the same will happen with Corrie, the guest contracts will save money aswell Helen leaving, but like Emmerdale they need to get rid of some of the deadwood and i think at the moment they have plenty to choose from in Corrie. If they can cut the cast it would be good for the show aswell as the budget.

With all the soaps though i genuinely think they could all do with cutting back episodes as i think it would be beneficial for the quality, i honestly think 3 episodes a week is enough for any of the soaps, but with Corrie and Emmerdale churning out 6 a week they could maybe cut to 4 and have EastEnders on 3 as they currently only air 4 a week.

A new producer's not long started and she's promised some cast exits, which will be interesting to see. I do believe the cast needs a cull, there are too many expendable characters right now. Kirk, Craig, Sean, Brian, Izzy, Ronnie, Michael and Bobby could all easily be axed with nobody really missing them. I think someone like Yasmeen only really serves as a relative for Alya these days sadly, likewise Ed with Dee Dee. A smaller cast would allow some of the old faces to appear more often, it feels wrong only seeing Eileen twice every few months for example.

I wouldn't mind it going down to 5 x 30 minute episodes, could easily air at 8pm every night on ITV (with them splitting the Thursday hour long Emmerdale into two half-hour episodes). That'd justify a slightly smaller cast anyway, and cut out some filler.

Many of the complaints going around have been repeated for a few years and it doesn't appear to have had any detrimental impact on the show. I think the focus on the younger cast is actually really good - I don't think the show's in any position where it needs to bring back old characters, it'd risk becoming a parody of itself like EastEnders sometimes does by relying so much on its legacy instead of pushing ahead. The likes of Dee Dee, Lauren, Daisy and Lisa have been among my favourite characters this year and they're all relatively new to the show! I think it could do with finding a balance so that the likes of Eileen, Evelyn, Tracy, Mary, etc can all appear too, because I've definitely noticed the absence of the long-standing characters.

I've not found it to be that bad this year anyway. It's felt a bit like a detective show at times but when Lisa and Kit are so compelling, I don't even mind. There are interesting dynamics within the younger cast too - Betsy and Mason are a great pairing, and Max has come into his own with the recent Lauren stuff. Gail's exit felt surprisingly lowkey, it appears Helen Worth may have wanted it that way but it's a shame she didn't get a bigger send-off. Nevertheless, her final episode was beautiful, and the 1:1 scenes with Gail and each of her kids were so touching, especially with David - it felt more like a conversation between Helen and Jack P Shepherd, two friends saying goodbye after so long.

It's interesting because Emmerdale seems to have managed slightly better, you don't notice a lack of the big names in there (far from it in fact, the Dingles are more prominent than ever), so I think Corrie could do with taking a leaf out of their book. In good news, the new producer has come straight from Emmerdale...

Nooo. I like her..one of the best characters. The new Executive Producer is sure making her mark..

It will never be axed. ITV's top show.

Yeah I think Corrie is too much of a legendary show to be axed and it is still pulling in millions of viewers per episode.

I agree it needs a bit shake up though, I stopped watching years ago but my mum watching it religiously and I sometimes catch it when I am at hers... I do find it quite tedious tbh, the storylines are just not as powerful or it's too silly to even be funny.

I cant see Corrie getting axed for a very very long time if ever, if itv were to axe a soap i think Emmerdale would go first.

The show just needs a bit of work on it and we see with the soaps they all go through rough patches and bounce back and corrie will be no different.

I'd be shocked to see either axed when they both do well enough on the ratings, and I doubt ITV will want that much schedule time to fill. They'll do whatever they can to bring costs down without having to axe them, and I assume they'll want to keep as many episodes airing per week as possible too (even though I very much believe even 30 mins less per week would benefit Corrie)

As i said in a previous post i genuinely feel the soaps would benefit from losing an episode or 2 per week, it would also brings down the costs.

Id honestly be happy to see that happen with all the soaps, they should cut corrie and emmerdale by 2 episodes a week and in their place could easily air old classic episodes to fill the air time as i think there is still an audience that will watch classic episodes and same applies for EastEnders,
