Last month marked 10 years since the release of 'Give Me All Your Luvin'', the lead single to Madonna's twelfth album 'MDNA'. The song was written and produced with Martin Solveig and featured guest verses from Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.. Upon release, the song was given instant radio support in the US and UK through a deal Madonna with Clear Channel media and was also made instantly available to fans when they pre-ordered the album on iTunes. It received mixed reviews from critics; it was generally recognised as catchy but subpar to previous efforts and Madonna's vocals were criticised. Despite this, 'Give Me All Your Luvin' was a hit in many parts of the words, particularly Canada, Finland (reached #1), Italy (certified Platinum) and the US (certified Gold, 38th Top 10). Its success was limited in the UK, only reaching #37 and becoming Madonna's worst performing lead single since 'Everybody' failed to chart in 1982. The music video played into Madonna's upcoming Super Bowl performance with its football/cheerleader theme and was reported to have cost $1.5m, placing it among the most expensive music videos.

10 years on, what are your thoughts and memories of 'Give Me All Your Luvin''?

Everybody wasnt released in the UK.

This song should have been a one off release and not used to lead a whole campaign.

I never play it to be fair but i like the minaj rap!

This song turned a lot of radio stations and fans off.

Everybody was released here on 7" and 12", it just didn't chart!

Give Me All Your Luvin' was quite the guilty pleasure for me at the time, but I've only heard it a handful of times since 2012. Its chart position here was unfortunate, but wasn't there some sort of issue with downloads not counting because they were a part of the MDNA pre-order?

Yes, it was made instantly available as part of the pre-order as well as available to purchase separately. A shame the actual purchases of the song couldn't count, I'm sure the OCC/iTunes were able to split them. There was also the issue that the song was released on a Friday, back when the tracking week for a chart was Sunday to Saturday with new releases on Mondays.

This was the progress on iTunes based on the archives we have on Buzzjack:

Day 1: Released 2pm, reached Top 20 (Friday)

Day 2: #13

Day 3: #17

Day 4: #17

Day 5: Out (pre-order offer ended)

Day 6 #42

Day 7: #29

Day 8: #28

Day 9: #30

A peak of just #13 is a disaster for a Madonna comeback single, especially considering it received a play on Capital FM upon every hour for its first 48 and was performed at the Super Bowl. I think it's safe to say that the song really did not connect with audiences and I definitely hold it responsible for Madonna losing radio support. I'm sure it would only have been a matter of time before she was dropped but it could easily have lasted longer.

I remember thinking the song was catchy at the time but I found it too meta and juvenile to be taken seriously and I remember my friends thinking the same. I do think it's one of the better produced songs on 'MDNA' in terms of mixing and sound etc. and I can still enjoy it if I forget it's a Madonna single but, when I remind myself of the fact, it is far beneath what I expect from her.

I completely forgot how poorly it did on iTunes! :o I assumed it would have had a much bigger first couple of days than that. So it was pretty much doomed from the start, although if it had a traditional release date/method, I suppose it would have had a peak in the 20s area of the chart.

why did they release it on a Friday? cos the Super Bowl was on Sunday I assume?

but I don't understand what you wrote about iTunes, so it was a Grat? but Grats have always been allowed to chart?

Not always. There's been a few rules about instant grats over the years, can't remember the circumstances for all of them but 'Do What U Want' by Lady Gaga and 'Break Free' by Ariana Grande were chart ineligible for a while and there was a case of 'Berzerk' and 'Rap God' by Eminem being made chart ineligible for a week despite already charting (something to do with the amount of instant grats you were allowed or something).

As for the Friday release, I'm guessing because of the Super Bowl too. It premiered around the world at the same time too.

Edit: Found this thread regarding instant grats from 2013: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=159255

2. What are the chart rules regarding instant grats?

Before the start of this year, no instant grats were allowed to chart at all. This led to awkward situations like Coldplay's 'Paradise' being excluded from the chart for six weeks when it would have been comfortably top 40. The OCC were prompted to change their mind when David Bowie's 'Where Are We Now?' was looking like a #1 contender that could have been excluded from the chart. (In the event, it ended up at only #6, but that's besides the point). However, the rules have only changed for when there is ONE instant grat track from an album. If there is more than one, only one of those tracks will be able to chart. This is usually the first one to be made available but is officially the one that the record label 'nominate' as the one chart eligible instant grat.

but the Madonna song did chart, so it's not like Paradise

which didn't chart as a Grat and only charted after the album release

Maybe in Madonna's case, most people were pre-ordering the album and getting the song as a Grat, so those didn't count

and only counted the proper single sales but the majority of fans did pre-order

From the first Friday to Monday of its release, the song was an instant grat. Then the offer ended so the sales from Tuesday to Saturday were chart eligible.

Learnt something new about Everybody today!

I can see why this was given the push with the big Superbowl performance but it really was a nail in the coffin for this era before it even began. The features on paper sound INCREDIBLE; two of my faves alongside my actual fave but the end result is so devoid of what each of these artists is capable of. It's a fun song and pops off but ultimately it is not lead single material and she really could've come back with something so much stronger with the two features on board. A shame thinking about what could've been with Nicki and M.I.A. on board a lead single for Madonna.
