Biography

J Balvin

In an interview with Apple Music about his 2020 album Colores, J Balvin told a story about a guy who came up to him one day on the treadmill. He’d been watching Balvin, he said. Watching his influence, his impact, his good work. He felt inspired by him, quit drugs and gave his dreams another look. Fame was nice, but this, Balvin said, was the point. “When you throw in good energy, good vibes, people just start catching up to it.” More than a musician, Balvin has become a kind of role model, the emblem of Latino culture’s evolution—like hip-hop in the '80s—from a specialty market into a dominant force in mainstream pop. The guy at the gym wasn’t just seeing a star; he was seeing something he maybe thought couldn’t exist years before.

Born José Álvaro Osorio Balvín in Medellín, Colombia, in 1985, Balvin grew up listening to rock music before falling in love with Daddy Yankee and reggaetón. He moved to the States as a teenager, first for a language exchange program in Oklahoma, then to New York City, before heading back to Colombia to start making music—a grassroots, home-first approach that Balvin has sustained throughout his career. Balvin’s biggest songs—from early singles like “6 AM” and “Ay Vamos” to 2017’s massive “Mi Gente” and the ROSALÍA collaboration “Con Altura”—are, in a sense, crossover Latin tracks, but not because they’re trying to cross over. If anything, Balvin, along with musicians like his collaborator Bad Bunny, represents a generation of Latino artists having global impact without having to cater to mainstream pop audiences—an approach that, ironically, helped reveal a changing understanding of who that mainstream audience actually is. In other words, they didn’t break into the conversation, they brought the conversation to them. And they’re having it in Spanish. - Apple Music

Ed Sheeran

There’s a lovely moment a little ways into Apple Music’s Songwriter documentary about Ed Sheeran in which Sheeran, jet-lagged and carrying a cup of tea, straggles out into a yard in Malibu at dawn, sits down at his laptop and begins writing a song about the moment right in front of him: the crisp air, the birdsong, the hot tea, the day ahead. He gets a full verse in, melody and all, then pauses. “Songs are weird things,” he says. “How so?” an interviewer asks. “They just come and go,” Sheeran says, smiling. “And they never give you any warning.” For Sheeran, they seem to come pretty reliably. Born in 1991 in Halifax, England, he started out gigging on the UK pub circuit before releasing his first studio album, +, in 2011, and has since become one of the most unstoppable singer-songwriters in music, forging a light blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and dance that feels slick but lived-in, intimate but universal. Whether on his own (“Sing”, “The A Team”, “Shape of You”, “Perfect”) or in collaboration with artists from Taylor Swift to Eminem to Justin Bieber, Sheeran has a unique ability to strike a chord that feels both bittersweet and redemptive, good-natured and genuine: the hopeless romantic who convinces you he might just be right. In 2017, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, touching Prince Charles on the arm while shaking his hand—a breach of royal protocol, and an appealingly human one at that. - Apple Music

Biography

Following the success of 2016’s Moana, Lin-Manuel Miranda reunites with Disney as chief songwriter for Encanto, a celebration of family that also pays loving tribute to Colombia’s rich and diverse musical tradition. But there’s another name on the bill that’s just as exciting and noteworthy: Germaine Franco, the first female-identifying composer to score a Disney animated feature-length film. - Apple Music

Biography

Machine Gun Kelly

In an interview with Apple Music about his 2019 album, Hotel Diablo, Machine Gun Kelly described the night he hit bottom. He was in the iamspamspamami his daughter asleep in the next room. “I just had no serotonin in my body left to give me any type of motivation or happiness,” he said. “I realize that I wanted all this”—his circumstance, his art, his life—“to go away.” He didn’t die that night. But he did write a song about trying to (“Glass House”). It’s not an easy listen—at one point, he passes out with blood dripping on the floor. But the same extremes that can make Kelly’s music unsettling have also made him a beacon for his fans, the kind of artist who shines light in the darkest corners of his mind.

Born Richard Colson Baker in 1990, to missionary parents in Houston, Kelly was raised primarily in Cleveland, a city whose atmosphere of crime and post-industrial decay formed a backdrop for his tracks. Drugs, childhood trauma, self-negation: Kelly’s music never offers an easy way out. But as bleak as it can be, there’s a sense of catharsis to it, too, bridging the grit of hip-hop with the melodic quality of pop-punk and nu-metal—the spoonful of sugar that makes Kelly’s bitter pill go down. Is it rap? Is it rock? Nirvana, LINKIN PARK, or Eminem? To Kelly’s generation—including peers like Trippie Redd and the late Juice WRLD—the distinction is antiquated. They’re here for the feeling. Or at least the promise of letting the feeling out. - Apple Music

Bring Me The Horizon

“Why would you want to make a record with all the songs sounding the same?” Bring Me The Horizon singer Oliver Sykes posed this question during an interview with Apple Music, and it very much reveals the guiding principle behind BMTH’s always-shifting music. As with a caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly, the band that started in the mid-2000s by unleashing a particularly vicious brand of metalcore is a vastly different creature from the one that achieved stardom with 2015’s That’s the Spirit, a meticulously crafted blend of alt-rock melodies, thunderous guitars, and electronic music. And that isn’t even half of it. Within their hits, the band (not unlike their heroes LINKIN PARK in the nu-metal days) consistently incorporate elements from styles across the pop-music spectrum. In addition to the EDM synths busting through “Throne,” there are immaculately polished vocals woven into the otherwise snarling “Mantra.” Then there’s “Nihilist Blues,” a 2019 collaboration with electro-pop eccentric Grimes that sees Bring Me The Horizon completely ditching the mosh pit for the all-night rave. None of this has gone down in a bubble, it should be noted. Along with the similarly minded I Prevail and A Day to Remember, Bring Me The Horizon belong to a cluster of forward-thinking metalcore outfits who have redefined heavy, riff-fueled music with a love of genre-busting adventurousness and utterly infectious hooks. - Apple Music

Not that it's MUCH better, but I'd prefer if "emo girl" was the hit from this album just for the lols if nothing else.
