Posted April 4, 20223 yr @1511038014037938178 This would be an awful outcome if so. Channel 4’s not for profit setup has allowed it to take the lead in diverse programming and to take risks that other mainstream broadcasters may not be able to. I mean it takes that in some interesting directions sometimes but, as a whole, the channel regularly punches above its weight.
April 4, 20223 yr Absolutely not. Channel 4 is a remarkable success story that has produced some incredible British content. All at risk when the channel also has to take profit into account as it’s primary objective. C4 is essential for serving some key markets
April 4, 20223 yr Author The ironic thing is you can’t get TV that is anymore British than Channel 4, for better or worse! It’s the most representative of all areas of the country and the exact thing that the Gov should be promoting rather than allowing it to be watered down.
April 4, 20223 yr So this government really is just trying to neuter all the main channels huh? :/ Channel 4 has always produced much more left-field and daring content and while I don't watch them all the time, I'd be much more interested in a drama on here than an ITV one. It would be such a loss to see that change through this.
April 5, 20223 yr Very worrying. Apparently it's profitable, apparently it's in good working order, apparently it's liked by the public, but what it isn't is supportive of the government. same playbook as all the other conservative authoritarians from Orban to Putin, do not allow dissenting media and your government will survive. Labour should announce they'll protect it/reverse privatisation but I suspect committing to anything drastic and actually doable before it happens like that would take far too much moral courage.
April 5, 20223 yr Ideally, Labour will say that they will bring it back into public ownership at the price paid for it or (if it has tradeable shares) its market value, whichever is the lower. That might help put off potential buyers and should also be a defence against any legal action as buyers will have known the risks involved. A few Tory MPs have spoken out against this. Whether that translates into them voting against it is, of course, a totally different matter.
April 5, 20223 yr All because they won't bow down and kiss the feet of Boris and his gang of mendacious crooks. It reeks of fascism.
April 5, 20223 yr All because they won't bow down and kiss the feet of Boris and his gang of mendacious crooks. It reeks of fascism. THIS!! Those fascist crooks need to gtfo of power! A disgrace that people voted them in in the first place.
April 5, 20223 yr Yup and Dorries proved on her comittee appearance about Ch4 she doesn’t actually know anything about the company hence this is clearly an ideological decision!
April 28, 20223 yr On a phone-in this morning, Dorries claimed that Channel 5 was privatised a few years ago. As it has never been state-owned, it cannot possibly have been privatised. She was invited to defend her policy on Channel 4 News, not an unreasonable request. She refused. No other Tories were prepared to defend their policy either. I can't imagine why.
September 20, 20222 yr Author In an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, she revealed that the Truss government was "looking at the business case" for privatisation despite claims under Dorries that the broadcaster lacked the financial firepower to withstand the rise of American streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+. "We are looking especially at the business case for the sale of Channel 4 and making sure that we still agree with that decision, and that is what I am doing," she said. "I'm the type of politician that bases their decisions on evidence, that bases their decisions on listening and that's what I will be doing over the coming weeks. "I will take that approach when it comes to Channel 4 and every aspect of my brief."
