My ReviewNow That’s What I Call Music! 104 or Now 104 was the third volume released in 2019, just before Christmas. This volume contained 47 tracks with 2 UK #1 singles. It also featured a selection of songs at the end of Disc 2 as a throwback to the fourth volume of the series. It was the first time in the series that we saw music from Tones & I, Regard, Joel Corry, AJ Tracey, Riton, Becky Hill (as a lead artist), Lizzo, Aitch and Dermot Kennedy.

The omissions from this volume included the surprise absense of One Direction stars Harry Styles and Niall Horan with their respective hits, along with Travis Scott, Freya Ridings, Coldplay, blackbear, The Script, Solardo & Eli Brown, Halsey and others.

There has been no other music in the entire series so far from Jorja Smith, Lil Tecca, MIST, Young T & Bugsey, Y2K & bbno$, Dan + Shay, Normani (as a lead artist), DJ Spoony and Colin Thackery.

Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good

This time the theme used for the artwork was liquid gold against a dark backdrop and a plain white logo. It's actually very striking and I have commented before how I always liked the darker covers when they are done right, and this choice of simplicity and colours is aesthetically pleasing.

Disc 1 Favourite: Riton x Oliver Heldens feat. Vula – Turn Me On

I decided to go for the excellent combination of Riton and Oliver Heldens for this disc, it was a well produced track with a sample of a song from Yazoo from the 80's. Definitely a standout from this volume for me. I'd probably have put Regard in second place with a strong debut single (also a cover).

Disc 2 Favourite: Sam Fender – Will We Talk?

This disc is not a very vintage selection of tracks, especially as many are DNC's or tracks from the original version of Now 4. Sam Fender was still an emerging artist and this song which failed to make the Top 40 was quite a good one.

Disc 3 Tracklist:

(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Ed Sheeran feat. Khalid – Beautiful People 3:18 {1}

2. Harry Styles – Lights Up 2:52 {3}

3. Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus & Lana Del Rey – Don't Call Me Angel (Charlie's Angels) 3:10 {2}

4. Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down 2:51 {5}

5. Niall Horan – Nice To Meet Ya 2:39 {22}

6. Lauv & Anne-Marie – f**k, i'm lonely 3:19 {32}

7. Ellie Goulding & Juice WRLD – Hate Me 3:06 {33}

8. Halsey – Graveyard 3:02 {29}

9. blackbear – hot girl bummer 3:08 {14}

10. Travis Scott – HIGHEST IN THE ROOM 2:56 {2}

11. Dave – Professor X 3:38 {12}

12. AJ Tracey feat. MoStack & Not3s – Floss 3:02 {22}

13. Aitch feat. ZieZie – Buss Down 3:32 {8}

14. 5 Seconds Of Summer – Teeth 3:26 {46}

15. Megan Thee Stallion feat. Nicki Minaj – Hot Girl Summer 3:19 {40}

16. RAYE & Jess Glynne – Love Me Again 3:09 {55}

17. Katy Perry – Small Talk 2:42 {43}

18. The Script – The Last Time 3:16 {32}

19. Liam Gallagher – One Of Us 3:25 {50}

20. Coldplay – Orphans 3:18 {27}

21. Freya Ridings – Castles 3:32 {16}

22. Mark Ronson feat. Yebba – Don't Leave Me Lonely 3:36 {58}

23. The Chainsmokers, ILLENIUM & Lennon Stella – Takeaway 3:30 {64}

24. Yves V feat. Afrojack & Icona Pop – We Got That Cool 3:33 {68}

25. Solardo & Eli Brown – XTC 2:37 {48}

Total time: 1:19:53

Overall Rating: 6/10 Good

The choice of songs that did not chart is quite remarkable. Colin Thackery was not even well known at the time, and his cover version of Wind Beneath My Wings is one of the worst selections of the whole series. There is a lot that could make this volume better, but thankfully this was the last time that Disc 2 would conclude with a load of historic tracks to fill disc space. I think some of the omissions were not deserving of being overlooked for this volume, but the chart dominance of Dance Monkey for so many weeks made it much harder for fresh hits to be had.

Celine Dion did actually appear before this, on Now 29 with The Power Of Love.

Oh wow yes of course, I thought immediately you were wrong and that it was the version by Jennifer Rush... but on inspection I made the mistake! :blush:

A pretty poor edition for me sadly, I rated it 5/10. My favourites were I Could Get Used To This on a quite average Disc 1 (I accidentally voted for my second favourite Dance Monkey, so take one away from that) and Memories on a largely bad Disc 2.

Castles by Freya Ridings definitely should have made it.

Ignoring the retro picks, these are the songs I would still listen to today, but I only love about four of these:

1. Tones & I – Dance Monkey 3:30 {1}

2. Kygo & Whitney Houston – Higher Love 3:47 {2}

4. Ed Sheeran feat. Stormzy – Take Me Back To London 3:09 {1}

8. AJ Tracey – Ladbroke Grove 3:10 {3}

9. Jorja Smith feat. Burna Boy – Be Honest 3:28 {8}

18. Becky Hill & WEISS – I Could Get Used To This 3:14 {45}

19. Tiësto, Jonas Blue & Rita Ora – Ritual 3:18 {24}

21. Lizzo – Good As Hell 2:37 {7}

27. Dermot Kennedy – Outnumbered 4:05 {6}

31. Camila Cabello – Liar 3:28 {21}

32. Normani – Motivation 3:14 {27}

34. Lana Del Rey – Doin' Time 3:20 {42}

37. HAIM – Summer Girl 3:26 {DNC}

38. Maroon 5 – Memories 3:07 {5}

40. Westlife – Dynamite 3:31 {DNC}

I can't believe Celine has only appeared twice in the entirety of the NOW back catalogue. Think Twice, My Heart Will Go On, I'm Alive, A New Day Has Come, and Taking Chances should've all made appearances in my opinion
