International music sensation Robbie Williams is slated to perform in Israel on Thursday, with his arrival to the Holy Land now scheduled for Monday night, after requesting to move up his flight. The British pop star also revealed that he has invited local singer Noga Erez to perform with him.

Williams showed interest in the Israeli musician about six months ago when he first tweeted about her, and continued express his appreciation for her music that he says he and his daughter enjoy.

"Can this person be the next biggest person pls? Asking for a friend,” Williams said in his first tweet about the Israeli musician, and shared her song NAILS. Many responded with excitement, including Erez herself.

Erez then retweeted Williams, with the message: "Hey Robbie Williams. This person loves you!” and added, "What just happened?”

‘Incredibly excited’: British pop star Robbie Williams lands in Israel

Singer to perform Thursday night in Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park, his first Israeli show in eight years; says he’s a ‘massive Noga Erez fan’

Renowned British pop star Robbie Williams arrived in Tel Aviv Monday for his Thursday night performance in Yarkon Park, his first Israeli show in eight years.

“I was incredibly excited to get here, and much like last time, incredibly excited to be here and experience what Israel actually is and what the people actually are,” said Williams during Tuesday’s press conference at Tel Aviv’s Sheraton Hotel, adding that he can tell a lot about a place just by the entrance in the airport, including the customs officials and security and the people that drive the bus from the plane to the terminal. “You get a feel. Big smiles. Welcoming. Kindness,” he said. “There’s a lot of gratitude in people’s eyes, just from that little bit.” Williams said he was last in Israel in 2015, “so 8 years ago, that’s mental. I woke up in a really good mood today, and I woke up excited and I woke up being excited about being here, but also about the prospect of what this show could be.”

Williams, performing as part of the Summer in the City festival, was supposed to headline the second night of the event, with British singer Sam Smith performing Wednesday, May 31, but Smith withdrew earlier this month from the festival due to reported technical and logistical problems. The festival has now been whittled down to just the one event on Thursday evening. Smith’s cancelation was amidst backlash from supporters of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement calling on the performer to cancel the Tel Aviv performance.

While Williams kept his discussion of politics vague and to a minimum, he expressed anxiety about how his arrival in Israel would be construed by the public. “There’s a lot of gratitude in people’s eyes, just from that little bit.”

The British pop star, married to Turkish-American Jew Ayda Field, has said he and his family mark Jewish holidays. He has said that while he feels more Jewish than Catholic, he does not plan to convert to Judaism, apparently put off — at least in part — by the idea of circumcision. The singer, formerly a member of the English pop group Take That, got excited talking about the possibility of Israeli indie artist Noga Erez joining him at the Thursday night show.

“Noga makes me feel like a giddy fifteen-year-old,” Williams said. “When I see her, I want to be her. When I see her perform, I want to perform like that. I have great respect and am in awe of her talent.” Erez, often called “the Israeli answer to Björk,” sings heavily electronic songs that are sharp in their tone and messaging, and are primarily in English. Williams also briefly discussed a biopic based on his life that is currently in production, and is lined up to be released in late 2023 to early 2024. Michael Gracey, known for his work in “The Greatest Showman,” is directing the movie. Williams has taken an involved role in its script and production.

“It’s sort of like being invited to the best birthday party that you could ever wish for, and not feeling like you truly deserve it,” Williams said of the movie. “It’s kind of scary, once again laying yourself bare.”

Robbie Williams bonds with Noga Erez ahead of Tel Aviv show

pdmaNvU.png

K pop star Robbie Williams will fulfill his wish to perform with indie Israeli singer Noga Erez Thursday night at Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park. Williams, who arrived in Israel Monday night, rehearsed with Erez at his Wednesday evening sound check and let fans know that Erez would appear at the concert.

The two will perform the duet “Kids,” which Williams composed with Kylie Minogue, a reference to Erez’s second album, also titled “Kids.”

According to Hebrew media reports, Erez taught Williams a few Hebrew slang words during their rehearsal, including magniv, sababa and achla, all local versions of “cool.” Williams has expressed his admiration for Erez on Twitter, writing in November: “Can this person be the next biggest person pls? Asking for a friend.” At the time, Erez responded: “Hi Robbie, this woman loves you!”

At Williams’s Tuesday press conference, he described himself as a “massive Noga Erez fan.” “Noga makes me feel like a giddy 15-year-old,” Williams said. “When I see her, I want to be her. When I see her perform, I want to perform like that. I have great respect and am in awe of her talent.” Erez, often called “the Israeli answer to Björk,” sings heavily electronic songs that are sharp in their tone and messaging, and are primarily in English.

Williams will take the stage at 9 p.m. Thursday, following performances from English songwriter Calum Scott, Israeli pop singer Static and Dutch DJ Martin Garrix.

Williams has expressed his excitement about being in Israel, and spontaneously performed with a Tel Aviv busker this week at the city’s beach promenade, singing his hit song “Angels”:

Robbie Williams charms Israeli audience, declares: Yalla balagan! - review

Williams showed off a tattoo that says “simcha,” happiness, in Hebrew letters, and said it was his way of showing respect to his family’s Jewish traditions.

When I realized that Robbie Williams' world tour is for an album called XXV, marking 25 years to his solo career, I almost couldn't believe it, and I felt pretty old. But then I remembered that he was one of those artists who put out a song in honor of the year 2000 ("Millennium," which he did not sing on Thursday) and that the "Rock DJ" music video, in which he strips off all his clothes, then - terrifyingly - his skin and his organs until he's a dancing skeleton, was one of the first I saw on MTV as a tween.

What I'm saying is, Robbie Williams and I go way back. Maybe even 25 years back, though I really became a fan after moving to Israel as a teenager in the early 2000s, when he was ubiquitous on Galgalatz and MTV Europe. Much of the crowd, however, seemed to be fans from his early days as a member of the boy band Take That. (That’s my subtle way of saying I no longer felt old once I saw everyone else there.)

Williams looked back on his career, telling stories at different points of the show. As he reminded the audience, Take That’s first single came out in 1990, the year after the Berlin Wall fell and Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was 17, and filmed a music video - that he showed us - in which a woman rubbed jello on his naked bum, as they say in the UK. He stopped the video at that very moment, and just let that image linger for a while, as he cracked jokes about how ridiculous boy bands are and talked about his band-mates firing him. That particular part of his body was somewhat of a recurring bit, which makes sense, seeing as he’s never been shy about it.

“Allow me to reintroduce myself,” he said soon after the concert began. “I’m Robbie Williams. This is my band. This is my a**. Yalla balagan!”

Williams sang most of his biggest hits, from “Let Me Entertain You” at the top to “Angels” as the finale, and a cover of fellow British 90s sensations Oasis’s “Don’t Look Back In Anger” in the middle, dancing around the stage in gold pants and a sequined and bejeweled top for most of the night. He was backed by multiple dancers and singers and a live band, and brought in Israeli singer Noga Erez for Kylie Minogue’s parts of “Kids.” As befitting a look back at his career, he had visual callbacks to his music videos on the screens behind him.

The show was replete with the typical Robbie Williams cheekiness - and that is not a pun about his butt. The banter was practically non-stop and as much a part of the experience as the music. To be an entertainer, “you need to love your audience. In the 90s, I tried to love you all individually,” he quipped. Williams, who’s in his silver fox phase with a head of grey hair, also joked a lot about his age, 49. When he needed to sit down, he said: “I’m not old; I have long COVID!” His fans, he said, “want to mother me. They want to make sure my back doesn’t hurt and that I’ve eaten enough.” “Sex. Remember what that was?” he asked at one point. Williams, who is married to a Jewish woman and has four Jewish children, as he noted, also had quite a bit to say about his totally apolitical fondness Israel. Before his previous concert in Israel eight years ago, he already made it clear that he won’t be cowed by Roger Waters and the BDS hordes. During the concert, he made it clear that he is not just against a boycott, but he really loves being in Israel. “You have something incredibly f***ing special here,” Williams said. “There is a peace here I don’t feel in London, I don’t feel in Los Angeles. Considering that, as a people you have so much going on, there was a calm and a sincerity. I felt you, I know who you are, I know how you are and you mean an awful lot to me.”

Williams showed off a tattoo that says “simcha,” happiness, in Hebrew letters, and said it was his way of showing respect to his family’s Jewish traditions. (Never mind that tattoos go against Jewish tradition.)

“I’m grateful to you, just as a people. God bless you,” he said. Then he went back to making a balagan, with the rapt audience singing along to every word.
