After the video got added to their channel and the comments it got I was wondering:

• Should they have released Love u more?

• If so, would you combine it with another song?

• Which would be the date of release?

• What would be it’s run + total sales look like?

Curious to see your thoughts :)

Yes :claire:

Actually a new song called ‘I do’ with a nice video.

• Which would be the date of release?

Somewhere in July ‘99 and postpone ‘Love’s got a hold..’

5-7-15-12-14-26-17-23-26-39-39-56-74-, around 232.00

I've mentioned this a couple of times but yes with Back to you as the double a-side. I think it would easily have been another top 5 for them, I see a run something like Better best forgotten had with slightly less sales.

And a UK release only or not?

I do think with some promo it could be top 20 in Australia, NZ, Belgium (Flanders) and top 50 in the Netherlands.

  • 3 weeks later...
I would have released it in all markets they were releasing in, at that time.
I think at the time a top 10 was a sure thing but overall may not have made much difference to album sales as it had done so well at that point, maybe a love u more with a brand new track could have resulted in a big hit but they did that with tragedy so 2 in a row may not have been as successful.

I think so, Better Best Forgotten showed there was a bit of life left in Step One, though it may have been a bit too much.

Maybe Back To You or a Double A with Just Like The First Time and include that on all version of Steptacular.

• Which would be the date of release?

Maybe July, though that'd then push back Loves Got A Hold On My Heart release and so on. So maybe not.

2 weeks top 10, 4 weeks top 20. (3-8-13-19)

I agree I don't think it'd have shifted anymore albums for them so in the end it's probably best they moved on to Steptacular.

It would have made a great double a-side with Better Best Forgotten, and maybe kept that single higher up the chart for a few extra weeks. I wouldn't have put it out in place of Love's Got A Hold On My Heart in July, as that was a great summer single for them, and in early 1999 they also had the ABBA tribute out with the other artists so any time around March/April could have been overkill. It might have worked as a standalone May single perhaps but I'm not mad that it wasn't because that might have diluted the hype and sales for LGAHOMY.

I also wouldn't have sacrificed Love's Got a Hold on My Heart release in favour of Love U More, and I think by that point there was no real need to make it a Double A Side release. Summer 1999 proved to be the perfect time for them to move on. LGAHOMH was a really big hit for them! Their sixth best seller, and one of only four of their singles to sell 100k+ in week 1.

I don't think their singles run is sorely missing Love U More. I appreciate it being one of their highlight album tracks instead. Five songs released as singles from Step One was probably enough.

There was the danger of releasing 2 many singles from one album as it would ended up like a greatest hits and it is nice having good album tracks as sometimes you have albums that have no good songs outside the singles but I have to say that's not the case with steps as each album has good songs outside the singles.
Love U More is fan popular and preferred to some singles but it would have provided them with an extra Top 10 hit if it had been released.
I would say the same for back to you, it's great to see that steps have revisited some older tracks like these, id say they know how popular they are with fans, same with paradise lost.

For me, there’s only one song I’d take off Step One and we all know which one that is…

But it isn’t THAT bad… it’s just because it’s H singing it lol!
