So I managed to get down to the pop-up after work and catch the last screening of the first episode..

It’s very good - with a couple of caveats.

The Take That stuff is covered very quickly, and is almost all well-known archive footage if you’re a fan and have watched all the other docs..

There’s just one clip I hadn’t seen before that made me go ‘ouch!’.

Nothing new here really - they get off very lightly, as has been the trend in recent years. Nigel Martin Smith is not even mentioned by name, the legal and financial side does not even get a mention, Rob is remorseful as ever about being nasty about Gary.

No mention at all of the things Gary had done himself that prompted said nastiness.

(I hope someday a documentary redresses the balance - it irks me that Gary always comes out looking like an innocent.)

The other thing is that because it’s based on archive footage, if it wasn’t filmed it doesn’t get discussed.

So although there is some very sweet footage of Rob and Nicole Appleton there is absolutely no mention at all

of her pregnancy and abortion, even though she has discussed that at length in her autobiography.

Mentioning the pregnancy was really my litmus test for whether this series is truly going deep or going to skip over stuff.

lI’ve lowered my expectations accordingly.

The new interview footage with Rob at home is really nice, though, and Teddy steals the show.

How is the new stuff:old stuff ratio in part 1?

I am curious if they’ve managed to tell the story of Take That without all the same old archive clips fans have seen a hundred times.

Basically there is barely any new film -it's RW watching old film in chronological order and giving his thoughts on it.

There was a fair bit on TT and their fans at the timr, then a lot on Guy and writing the first two albums (Guy comes across as lovely ) some on Nicole Appleton and Rob is commenting on it.

The only new film in part 1 is RW at his house explaining his sleep patterns

without giving away something, Laura, is it good?

It's good elisabeth although I would say in part one I didn't learn anything new and Lisa said the same.

Just further explanation of what we (as fans) know already but I guess Joe Public won't.

Yes agree about the ouch moment - I know which bit you mean and certainly if RW wanted to avoid the wrath of TT fans, they wouldn't have included that bit so to me that was an indication of how open he was going to be.

We commented about the abortion being missed out but I liked that fact - I guess he didn't think it was his subject to discuss. After all he had never mentioned it and it only came out in Nicole's book didn't it so I liked that he had respected her and left it out.

Agree about Teddy -isn't she a gorgeous little girl? As un show-bizzy as you can imagine.

Won't say anymore now so everyone else can catch up next Wednesday :)

I understand that reasoning, but at the same time I disagree.

How can thinking that you are going to be a daddy and then not having it happen not be ‘his subject to discuss’?

Especially when family is so important to him.

That he has never spoken about it before it why to me it’s the litmus test of whether this series is actually

going to reveal anything new, or if it’s going to be things the hardcore fans already know.

The new footage of them as a family is lovely, but like you said, I didn’t learn anything new.

Apart from possibly the restrictive eating disorder he mentions. That’s a bit of a ‘d’oh’ moment because he lost so much

weight so quickly when he went to rehab, of course he can’t have been eating properly. It really was one of those things that everyone saw but no-one noticed.

I was thinking about the abortion the other day and if it will be mentioned. If it would not happened Rob would have a 24 year old child now. I don't think that many people are aware about this and how it must have hurt. I remember I have read at least some interviews where Rob also said that he thinks this sometimes. Maybe he wanted to protect his children of now. On the other hand it is part of his scars. I also agree that there should be a balance in regard of Gary's behaviour in the band (he mentioned himself) causing at least some of Rob's later nastiness. All written in theory as I have not seen it yet and it might take a while as I do not have Netflix and won't get it for the documentary.

I can only guess that he did not want to speak about the abortion given that it affected someone that was once very close to him & it was a very personal thing & given the high profile he has & the way that social media/press sometimes use misleading headlines to their draw attention to their stories it might draw a lot of unwanted attention from a lot a scary crazy keyboard warriors out there . The stuff between him & the other TT band members is not that surprising , there can only be one leader of the band & if Rob wanted to be the leader he had to do it on his own when he did as it was never going to happen as part of TT.

But there will be thousands of Netflix fans if they choose to watch the documentary who will never have seen any of the archive footage & know very little about him. We know nearly every story there is to know because we are die hard fans. I think Netflix is a great platform for Rob to get noticed & given the career he has had he deserves it.

I am looking forward to watching all of it & wont be disappointed either way .

Just happened to turn on the radio this morning ( Brendan O'Connor show ) & they were reviewing upcoming streams on Netflix & Rob's documentary was mentioned, they did a kind of mini review outlining his age/career/a brief explanation of the documentary , kind of middle of the road review but given the radio audience that the B O'C show has I was delighted to hear them talk about it as any publicity is good publicity as far as I am concerned , they could have totally ignored it but they didn't which is great imo.

I have seen two mentioning about the pop up, one in German television and one in Dutch television. I really hope that many people watch it and it will get as much attention as the Beckham documentary. I know none of those his director must have done like the one about Wham or was it about Andrew Ridgeley (sorry if I misspell the name). I cannot judge the attention in the UK as it would pull other European countries at least. Still when i scroll through the showbiz news it is the K's, Taylor and many British people of soaps or reality soaps I never heard of.

Britney Spears had done it better in reference of 'sensation'. She went in with really this one head line about her abortion. Memories are selling like sliced bread and this will happen with her documentary either. We all can say that Rob is more sensitive etc. but when he decides to go the way for public discussions in times like these then i do not know if this sells enough aside to his fans.

Laura, i was wondering if they show Teddy in the documentary? in the snippets her face was half visible. Did they show her when she comments or does she comment from the off o back to the camera?

Teddy is shown fully - she pops around the door and Rob invites her over for a cuddle (he’s watching the footage in bed, so he invites her to get into bed with him - must admit that made me a cringe a little as something the malicious could take out of context).

I am hopeful that the doc has the desired effect in terms of profile boost and better understanding of Rob among the general public.

It is certainly generating a lot of press here and the response seems to be positive this far.

thank you, Kathryn. Interesting to hear. On the less serious side I sometimes wonder that Robbie is getting away with swearing and less but still slippery remarks on stage. I also sometimes wonder that there has been no one from the past yet who has sued him for whatever. So i can understand your remark especially considering that some tabloids wonder about a kiss between Beckham and his daughter.

Sorry but why has the discussion taken this turn . It's out of order in my opinion

To be clear, Rob and Teddy in the doc is 100% pure and innocent and I am probably worrying

unnecessarily!

Sorry, Tess, was not meant to be inappropriate.

No need to apologise to me Elizabeth, no ill feelings intended , it always worries me when I see the word sued :)
