Decided to create a general thread for them as I wasn't sure where else to put this.

The latest album of theirs getting the reissued boxset treatment is none other than 'Revolver', out on October 28th!

I haven't bought any of these boxsets so far, due to the expense and taking up a lot of room in my collection, but I think I may have to make an exception for my favourite album of all-time *.*

There are other products available on their store here like CDs and a less pricey vinyl option.

The 2022 mix of 'Taxman' is out there now and it's sounding glorious:

Most hyped for the 2022 mix of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' as it's a particularly rich experience production-wise  hearing 'Rain' in the trailer made me very excited too (an excellent song recorded during the sessions for this album, but never made the cut, if I had to swap anything about the 'Revolver' track list then it'd be replacing 'Yellow Submarine' with 'Rain' - the former got the movie to shine!)

Was there already a Beatles songs rate?

I hosted a survivor for the '1' compilation before but not sure about anything else

Revolver is candidate for Greatest Album Ever do a great fave choice. 💕 id love to buy this but ive already got it 3 times. Tempting though!

Maybe i'll do a Beatles Quickie Rate and resurrect that format. Id be interested to see if Here Comes The Sun wins or Let It Be or Hey Jude. If it was any other track id be very surprised but interested still to find out.

The Beatles deserve more than just a quickie rate but at the same time they deserve more scope than just a singles rate too.

Revolver is probably my favourite album of theirs but like PCF I already have it multiple times... it's still tempting to get the new vinyl to see whether it's improved or not though

What’s a Quickie Rate?

Its a sporadic rate I organise which forces people to pick only 5 absolute faves from the act, with heavily weighted points to the top faves of the 5 10/7/5/3/1 for example. It's more unpredictable cos if the usual winning track is everybody's 6th fave it gets nowt :D Plus it's easy to pick just 5 tracks rather than rating a whole career with 0.5 splitting about 10 tracks (in my case if I love the artist)

Narrow it down to 5? That sounds harder than doing it properly.

If 25 people will vote in a Westlife singles rate hopefully you’d get a decent turnout for a Beatles one!

One possible list for inclusion would be everything from the red and blue albums. That’s about 54 tracks I think - there are still some greats omitted but it covers most of them.

 Yes it really forces you to feel the love! I also allow any tracks, not just singles. In the case of The Beatles Here Comes The Sun is currently their most popular track but the hit version was Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel 7 years later :o

I'm going to do a review of each Beatles album in conjunction with my Record Of The Week 60 Years Ago thread so the first one will be in March next year. I'll also throw in B sides and any non UK singles. The first B side will be coming soon.
Sounds Fab :) One of my long-delayed projects is to create the ultimate Beatles albums as they should have been had marketing been the same as it is in 2022 - that is to include only your best tracks on an album, with everything else "bonus tracks" for hard-core fans. As singles tended not to be on albums back then, ditto B sides, they could have been more amazing than they actually are (or else there would have been extra albums with different track listings, as the USA issued out, but mine would be based on when they were recorded not when they were issued)

As promised, here's the first B side:

P.S. I Love You (B side of Love Me Do)

George Martin wasn't present at Abbey Road when this was recorded so it was produced by Ron Richards who knew of another song with the same title so he told the group that it couldn't be an A side. Although Ringo Starr had replaced Pete Best by this time, the drums were played by session drummer Andy White.

I don't remember hearing the song before. There's no intro, it goes straight into Paul McCartney's vocal. John Lennon adds harmonies on some of the words but not on others which makes this quite an interesting song vocally. There's a 'cha cha' rhythm going on throughout the song combining with the bass guitar, giving it a lighter sound compared to Love Me Do. I enjoyed the song, it gets a thumbs up from me.

I'm pretty familiar with 'P.S. I Love You' due to it making the track list of Please Please Me!

Their debut was quite a safe launch pad on the whole (with the simplistic catchy love songs and covers) but the rhythm of this song is a more spicy moment on it.

Ringo and McCartney should release a Beatles cover of Spice Girls' Too Much and Spice Girls' Sleigh Ride. Ooh must go listen to thwt now actually!!

Yeah I like PS I Love You too, catchy enough for them to have given away to Billy J. Kramer, or other assorted scouse labelmates, for a proper hit at the time.

I just saw the £110 Revolver box set in HMV and I must say it's very very sexy and attractive.... :o

There seems to be a fair proportion of problems with the box set so I’m steering clear. Lots reporting warped records with others reporting duplicates accidentally included rather than the different mixes that should be in there.

doh! that at least makes me want to buy it from HMV if I get around to it - I can at least return it pretty easily!

Giles Martin has done a super job with the mixing once again! Revolver has been my favourite album for almost a decade yet some instrumental parts are jumping out at me more than ever.

Good to see that the reissue managed to chart at #2 in the U.K. this week only behind Taylor Swift. I was happy to see people discovering and enjoying it for the first time in the chart forum.

(shame to hear about the vinyl problems though :( I hadn't got the boxset yet because the price is a bit too high for me at the moment)

It's time for the second B side now:

Ask Me Why (B side of Please Please Me)

John Lennon was the main writer for this one and the Beatles had been performing the song live for several months before recording it. There's a Latin American flavour to the rhythm here and the song is punctuated by pauses. It has a good lead vocal by John with George and Paul harmonising in places. It's certainly not a typical pop song for this era, they've already gone in an interesting direction with this one.

Don't know this one! Or rather, I've heard it before and never been motivated to play it again. All those oo-woo-woo's and so on make it sound like an early attempt at songwriting. File under "Work In Progress!" Please Please Me is way better, as are both sides of Love Me Do...

Plus side it's all uphill from here!
