Biography

Nigerian singer Burna Boy opened his Apple Music Up Next spotlight with a distinction: “Music’s supposed to be a universal language. You understanding what I’m saying is second. The primary thing is, what does the person inside you hear?” It’s a simple but radical thought: You can listen on your terms, but he doesn’t have to meet you halfway. Born in 1991 and raised on the southern coast of Nigeria before moving to London for college, Burna (born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu) has become one of the most prominent African pop artists of the 21st century, fusing his specific background—a Nigerian man entering adulthood in the United Kingdom—with a global vision that encompasses Afrobeats, dancehall, trap, UK hip-hop and just about everything else that might fit under his diasporic umbrella. The result is an artist who isn’t confined by his identity but doesn’t dilute it either. By the time he received broader recognition through a (conspicuously uncredited) feature on Drake’s 2017 mix, More Life, he was already a star in Africa; 2019’s African Giant, which featured collaborators as disparate as Angélique Kidjo, Skrillex, Damian Marley and Future, brought him into international focus. Yeah, he’s just speaking to his people. But there are more of them all the time. - Apple Music

Can they go one show without playing this? I hope FMH doesn’t get skipped as I’d much rather hear that instead

Yes, it's been skipped more than once

i was sick of this when it was in the top 10, but hearing it again after a few weeks, it sounds really nice!

Biography

With her enchanting howl of a voice and passion for outrageous creative risk, Kate Bush strikes an uncanny balance between artistic experimentation and pop satisfaction. In a career that goes back to the late ’70s, she’s produced hits like “This Woman’s Work,” “Babooshka,” and “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” alongside esoteric song cycles and conceptual works, inspiring artists as diverse as St. Vincent and Big Boi with her wonderfully witchy distillation of literary themes, musical idioms, and studio innovations. Born Catherine Bush in July 1958 in Kent, England, she grew up in a village farmhouse with an ever-supportive Roman Catholic family. Her two older brothers, John and Paddy, were her earliest collaborators; her big break came at age 16 when Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour helped her produce a demo tape and land a record deal. She was a sensation from the start with her Emily Brontë-inspired 1978 debut single, “Wuthering Heights,” summoning raw desire with her piercing soprano and the video's interpretive dance moves. She went on to produce a string of acclaimed albums throughout the ’80s and into the ’90s—including 1985’s masterful Hounds of Love, which veers between synth-pop, piano balladry, Irish folk, and earthy lyricism. Bush has been quieter in more recent years, releasing just three albums in the 2000s and 2010s. But her visionary work helped make way for the post-genre pop of artists like Lorde and Billie Eilish, while her artistic autonomy sets an important standard for the music industry. - Apple Music

Good idea and at least I’ll be contributing to its chart position

To think that a mate of mine got Oxlade confused for this:

Biography

Rosa Linn is a 21-year-old music artist, songwriter, and producer from Vanadzor, Armenia, a small city with, as she describes, “strict, conservative” views. Rosa began playing the piano at age six, but her experience as a musician prior to her involvement with Nvak had largely been a solitary experience: “You’re always on your own getting the gigs, finding the audience with no regional or global opportunity. I just didn’t think my voice had a shot at breaking through; but I kept going; and worked hard at the craft; and didn’t give up on my dream.” With the goal of becoming Armenia’s first global music artist and first female music producer, Rosa sees great potential in Armenia and wants to diminish the fear that music from the region will never be heard. Backed by punchy drums and polished synths, Rosa brings a modern twist to late 80’s and early 90’s indie-pop. She sings in both Russian and English, proving the power of a good story is universal. With a unique take on love and longing, Rosa brings a new perspective to the world of pop music. - Spotify

So am I. 2022 has really been the year that the genre really crossed over in the UK.
