Maybe I had demand over estimated but I expected this to be sold out now unless they are keeping it open so they will print all that they need.

It would be nice if the fans can throw weight behind the song on the week of release and stream and download it where they can and help it chart as an extra honour of Sarah.

I wonder would the proceeds from these be donated aswell.

That's right! Occasionally we've heard other alternative takes, although we shouldn't have heard them:

Radio stations once played a version of Sound of the Underground without any Kimberley vocals on it. See the Day with only Nadine's vocals was played once. Radio rips exist of both. The Promise was played with Nadine singing Nicola's part instead: I got my hands all ready to touch your soul - I'm gonna get the energy to wire me close to you - Got my eyes on the prize I see - Are you watching me, baby? but unfortunately only a bad quality recording exists of someone filming the radio in their car. (I'm wondering how all these radio mishaps were able to happen lol).

Kimberley actually referenced the existence of that version of Sound of the Underground in her autobiography. I guess somehow a radio station was sent the wrong version instead of the final mix.

I've since discovered that the people at our record label, Polydor, and the producers of Popstars had considered almost every combination of the six but never once considered a line-up without Javine. For them, it was really about her. Consequently, she was over the original recording of the song, and in almost every one of the cover shots for the single sleeve. Apparently, they were gobsmacked when Javine wasn't chosen that Saturday night, and they had to scrabble around to find the best photos of the rest of us together. Then Cheryl was dispatched straight back down to the recording studio to re-record all of Javine's parts, because we were due to shoot the video on Monday.

When we finally heard the finished single, however, I wasn't on it at all – I didn't have a single line – so when it came to rehearsing our choreography for the video, I burst into tears in front of everyone ... In the end, the producers did a quick re-mix of the song so that I had some solo lines on it, but who was singing what on our singles was often an issue after that, as it is in many pop bands.

A Beautiful Cause You Love Me lyric video was initially uploaded to Girls Aloud's YouTube channel which had Nadine singing a verse, but it was quite swiftly made private and then replaced with the version that we know from the Ten album.

There's even a version of No Good Advice that leaked which only has Nadine on the verses! Plus the outro is only Nicola and Sarah.

Unfortunately I think that's too much of a tall order because the threshold to go Top 100 becomes higher than usual. I think it could be close to 7,000 sales needed to go Top 100 in the week before the Christmas chart?

Going off old data it seems that Sound of the Underground usually manages a little over 1,000 sales a week (I wonder if that picks up a little bit at Christmas time because of Christmas #1 association?) and with ACR applied that would be halved. There's 5,000 copies of the vinyl, some of which will be purchased by non-UK fans.

At the very least it'll be nice to see it do as well as possible in the sales and physical charts

Nicole doesn't have any solo lines in the song does she? Would be interesting if her solo lines were taken and given to Kimberly.

They really must have been gobsmacked when javanese didn't go through, I would also understand kimberley been upset realising initially her lines weren't in.

“Then it drops and catches like a fire” is Nicola!

I don’t remember someone called Javanese been being a contestant! :teresa:

To be hair, wasn’t Kimberley in the bottom every week? so they probably thought she had least chance of getting in

Nadine posted about it earlier today: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjnFVR1DhCK/?hl=en

Hello lovely loves!!! This is such a lovely thing that is happening!! Polydor Records are releasing a limited edition 7” vinyl of ‘Sound Of The Underground’ in celebration of its 20th anniversary. It’s never been on vinyl before! On the b-side is a fun version of the song where we all sing each others parts that our producer, the brilliant Brian Higgins, uncovered in the GA/Xenomania archive. And, each copy comes with a set of Buy Girls, Bye Boys stickers. 😂

Most importantly, profits for the single go to The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal which is part of The Christie Charitable Fund. 💖💞💖 You can pre-order your copy now.. the link is in my biog”

I honestly dont remember but from what i do remember Nadine and Javine seemed to the 2 that everyone assumed would go through. I also remember when it was down to Sarah and Javine i was sure Javine would go through but i wanted Sarah.

Girls Week 1 [10 contestants]

Top 7: Aimee Kearsley, Cheryl Tweedy, Chloe Staines, Javine Hylton, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts & Sarah Harding

Bottom 3: Kimberley Walsh [8th], Emma Beard & Lynsey Brown

Bottom 2: Emma Beard [9th] & Lynsey Brown

Eliminated: Lynsey Brown [10th]

Girls Week 2 [9 contestants]

Top 5: Aimee Kearsley, Javine Hylton, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts & Sarah Harding

Two separate Bottom 2s: Cheryl Tweedy & Emma Beard // Kimberley Walsh & Chloe Staines

Eliminated: Emma Beard & Chloe Staines

^ The results that week were done in a strange way, presumably as a twist to be entertaining:

"The girls were split into two groups and were told that one girl would be eliminated from each group. From group one, Cheryl Tweedy and Emma Beard received the lowest number of votes and ended up in the bottom two. Emma was eliminated. From group two, Chloe Staines and Kimberley Walsh received the lowest number of votes and ended up in the bottom two. Chloe was eliminated."

Therefore the eliminated two weren't necessarily the actual bottom 2 overall. One of them was definitely the least voted for overall, but the other wasn't necessarily the second least voted for overall. Not exactly a fair way of doing things that week!

Girls Week 3 [7 contestants]

Top 3: Javine Hylton, Nadine Coyle & Nicola Roberts

Bottom 4: Kimberley Walsh [4th or 5th], Sarah Harding [4th or 5th], Cheryl Tweedy & Aimee Kearsley

Bottom 2: Cheryl Tweedy [6th] & Aimee Kearsley

Eliminated: Aimee Kearsley [7th]

Week 4 was the final, and as we know, Javine came 6th.

It's certainly interesting that Javine did better than Kimberley in the first three weeks, but ultimately did worse than her in the final. Javine presumably did better than Cheryl in week 2 (impossible to know for sure considering the split into two groups thing) - but she definitely did better than Cheryl in week 3. Javine did better than Sarah in week 3.

Cheryl was rather lucky. She went into that final 6 having been the least voted for out of them in the previous week. When it came to the line up being announced, Cheryl's name was read out first. I'm not sure if that was meant to be an indication that she got the most votes in the final, or if Davina unveiled the top 4 at random. Regardless, Cheryl clearly picked up considerably more support in the final to jump ahead of Sarah and Javine.

Javine did seem like a dead cert to make it, it was a genuine shock when she didn't. I'm glad it worked out that way purely because the line up we got is the one we went on to get to know and love, so it's difficult to imagine a different combination.

There was a controversy over whether there was a fix with the phone votes. Perhaps when it came down to it, viewers just assumed Javine would make it and didn't feel motivated to vote for her, which could have been her downfall.

Only Nadine and Nicola had an easy ride when it came to the process of the live shows, never finding themselves at risk of going.

However when it comes to Nicola, her being in the final 10 at all wasn't technically supposed to happen. She initially only made it into the Top 15 - the same goes for Kimberley. An original Top 10 finalist, Hazel, was removed because she had broken the rules about the age limit. Kimberley was chosen to replace her; Geri was really passionate about Nicola being chosen instead but Louis refused. Then thankfully another original final 10 girl, funnily enough also called Nicola, decided to pull out of the show - and only then did Nicola Roberts get put into the final 10.

Learning that Nicola did so well in the competition makes it more odd she basically got crumbs in terms of vocal contribution on the first album.

Was she born 15th June 1985, making her a Gemini?

To be hair

This typo is pure perfection, especially coming right after the Primark nightwear conversation :D

I don't think it's a coincidence that the distribution of lines early in their career seems to reflect Louis Walsh's preferences: Nadine's the lead singer, Cheryl and Sarah should have their fair share of the spotlight, and Kimberley and Nicola weren't even in his top 10, let alone top 5, so they're just there to make up the numbers.

Poor Nicola is also focused on the least in the music video.

Hazel had the opposite problem of being too old! She was born on 20 June 1977, and was 25 years and 10 days old on the day of her audition. Presumably she lied about it to make it all the way to the final 10 before she was found out. The upper age limit was the ripe old age of 24! I suppose rules are rules, but wow, it seems kind of harsh when it was just a matter of days. I wonder if an upper age limit for an audition is even be allowed anymore - it seems discriminatory? While I know pop groups are youth orientated, it just seems a bit dodgy!

Going off on a tangent but Una Healy [10 October 1981] was about 26 years and 8 months old when The Saturdays released If This Is Love. Quite a bit older than her band mates (Mollie - 1987, the other three 1989) but it clearly didn't matter and I'm glad the team who put The Saturdays together didn't dismiss Una for her age at the time.

Although we can thank those age rules for Girls Aloud being able to become the line up we got, of course.

I honestly think Javine would've quit within months and caused them to implode, thank heavens she didn't make it!

I get this vibe too. Maybe it's not fair to assume this, but I feel like she would have been itching for a solo career and essentially used the group as a temporary launchpad towards that.

I honestly think Javine would've quit within months and caused them to implode, thank heavens she didn't make it!

I totally thought that too, could see her being like Kym Marsh who very clearly did the same thing with Hear’Say. Then again I think there was a lot of tension in that group wheres Girls Aloud seemed to get along a lot better in the earlier days so perhaps it’s unfair to assume that of Javine. She was definitely pushed as the “star” of the group though just from the fact that they did all the covers with her on them assuming she couldn’t possibly not be in the group.

The Girls Aloud line up worked wonderfully.

Javines inclusion would have resulted in her departing after their debut album.

I didn't need any second bidding to pre-order this. I only just recently bought a case for my 7" vinyls - which houses all my GA 7" vinyls - so I can't wait for this to be added. Even better that the royalties are being donated in Sarah's memory.

I really hope this is testing the waters for the albums to follow next year!
