Q3

It's time for the third installment of my favourite songs of the last three months, covering July-September (and a bit of October x). I was on my holidays for a good chunk of this period so on the one hand, I would be distracted or playing music I already know to celebrate but on the other, I wasn't at work for a lot of it so was able to have time to explore new music, and the weather gave a lot of great long walk opportunities to do this. Being cooped up with Covid the last few days, I've had the time to compile my favourites (some of these do come with the caveat of not being from exactly this period, but given I'm not always switched on to new music at the best of times, I will allow myself this caveat x):

This will be the last one I'll post here for the year as my Q4 thread will be mixed with my EOY.

01; Daniel Avery - Higher

02; Gorillaz feat. Tame Impala & Bootie Brown - New Gold

03; Julien Bracht - Don't Chase Your Enemies

04; Panda Bear & Sonic Boom - Edge of the Edge

05; Sung - Cosmic Road

06; Grimes - Shinigami Eyes

07; Arctic Monkeys - There'd Better Be a Mirrorball

08; Yeah Yeah Yeahs feat. Perfume Genius - Spitting Off the Edge of the World

09; NoSo - Man Who Loves You

10; bdrmm - Three

11; Magdalena Bay - All You Do

12; Desire - Black Latex

13; Gabe Gurnsey - Higher Estates

14; Hot Chip - Eleanor

15; Resina - A Crooked God

16; George Fitzgerald feat. SOAK - Rainbows and Dreams

17; Beyonce - BREAK MY SOUL

18; Eliza Rose & Interplanetary Criminal - B.O.T.A (Baddest of Them All)

19; Mitski - The Only Heartbreaker

20; Jessie Ware - Free Yourself

Higher is a beautiful instrumental with wonderful piano accompanying frenetic beats, I haven't heard from him in a while so thank you to 6Music for reintroducing me to this. Also given quite regular rotation on the morning radio there is the second single from Gorillaz which I like more than the first with a great chorus courtesy of Tame Impala and also this wonderfully dreamy track from George Fitzgerald with vocals from SOAK.

A few long summer walks with Apple Music playlists in the background did allow me to catch up with a lot of Indie/Electro hits from the likes of Grimes, Gabe Gurnsey, Magdalena Bay and Hot Chip. NoSo I've not seen as much buzz about on here, but I would recommend it, a really wonderful Indie-pop track with some great vocal and synth production. Likewise, Panda Bear is a quirky electro track with Beach Boys style harmonies. I'm hopelessly late to Mitski, but it's still 2022 it was getting airplay, so it counts x

My trio of failure in BJSC - bdrmm, Sung and Desire - have nonetheless provided an intensely dark, synth heavy soundtrack to my summer, and one I almost sent to BJSC from Julien Bracht. On the slightly more positive side is Beyonce's dance masterpiece which sounded a lot better in the context of the album and on the other side is this dark, classical piece from Resina, an under the radar cellist who I would highly recommend if you're into dark classical inspired music.

Eliza Rose finally grew on me by the time it reached number 1, sorry Kath :'( Best 2022 number 1 in quite a long time (just counting 2022 songs x). Jessie Ware, Arctic Monkeys and Yeah Yeah Yeahs also good songs most of you probably already know x

Thanks for all the comments last time, next time I'll see you guys will be in the EOY forum ;o

Hey Chez :hi:

Very pleased to see the appreciation for 'The Only Heartbreaker' now *.* I presume it is 6Music delivering those residual plays? if so then, taste. The accompanying album is fab too!

'New Gold' is a massive Q3 highlight for me as well  also a fan of the songs by Grimes, Arctics, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, bdrmm (you're being slept on in recent times :'( ), Desire (the suggested in Q2 thread to appearing in Q3 thread timeline we love to see it x), Hot Chip, George, Beyoncé and Jessie!

Need to check out some of the others here, I love 'Push' by Gabe Gurnsey at the moment but don't know the song here - will add it straight to my 'listen to this' style playlist.

Hyped for your EOY countdown, I'm also planning to do one (not done so since 2013 so a bit rusty *_*) - so will save a novel of recommendations for that instead, although would more hurriedly recommend the new album by Vandal Moon called Queen Of The Night as it's a dark one so perfect for Halloween, I think you might like it too <3 also 'Good To Go!' by Los Bitchos tbh xx

Daniel Avery has been dropping basically nothing but bangers all year and 'Higher' is definitely my favourite of his 2022 output to date (/his entire discography) so an excellent choice of #1  Super excited for his album.

I love all of your top 8 here - Sung was really robbed, that was your best entry for a while :/ but still grateful for the discovery of course. Love the Beach Boys vibes on the Panda Bear/Sonic Boom track, it really is a time capsule! Julien Bracht fast becoming a new fave electronic act for me (after discovering him via a remix by the aforementioned Daniel Avery) with the song here being my fave I've heard from him to date <3 and 'There'd Better Be A Mirrorball' is a gorgeous comeback from the Arctics, working better for me than anything off their last era.

Some good stuff in the lower half here too, particularly the belated appearance for Mitski, easily by favourite song from her. The George FitzGerald song is fab too but there were a few others from that album I liked more, the trio of 'Setting Sun', 'Cosmonaut Alley' and 'Retina Flash' midway through in particular is just gorgeous as I mentioned in the thread for the album.

I really need to get on Gabe Gurnsey with all of this hype coming from various people who I trust to have good taste x

Hi there!

Nice to see "Spitting Off the Edge of the World", "Break My Soul", "B.O.T.A.", "The Only Heartbreaker" and "Free Yourself" in your chart.

Great chart!

Hey chez!

I'm actually so happy to see Shinigami eyes so high up at this point in the year. Grimes is generally hit or miss for me though with more hits. Shinigami eyes is one of my favourite songs from Grimes in the full discography. Player of Games is right up there as well so it's a shame it's not featured here.

I'm actually quite shocked to see Break My Soul enter here for your last three months if only for the fact I thought your musical taste was a bit more high brow than this. Great song though and love the sample. I am a bit shocked she's not released any music videos for this era though.

Noice!

Hi Jade! It was actually on an Indie Faves playlist from Apple Music I heard Mitski, I did hear it a bit towards the start of the year but not properly until then, I have been meaning to check out the album too

Pleased to see you're liking so much, I would highly recommend Cosmic Road from BJSC, you were one of the people I'd hoped would be into it but you were in the other semi :'( It's a great 80s synthwave vibe x

I have been really interested in seeing a Jade EOY these last few years so pleased to see you doing one, I'll look out for it *.

Quite, I heard another song of his yesterday - Wall of Sleep with HAAi - which is already sounding like a Q4 contender <3

Pleased someone else knows the Panda Bear/Sonic Boom, it's wonderfully eclectic and has some great visuals to accompany it. Pretty much everything I've heard from Julien Bracht is sounding amazing, shame I had to limit this to one song per artist, whoever picked that song in Club Bizarre has good taste x

Gabe Gurnsey's song is great, I don't actually know anything else from them but I'm gonna check them out x

Hi James! Shinigami Eyes has been in my head since I first heard it, I did quite like Player of Games (it was 2021 I first heard it, so not quite eligible for here), but didn't quite hit me the same way.

High Brow music taste, what a compliment :cheeseblock: you obvviously haven't seen my plays for the Birdie Song, I think this is a really good song from her though, it's very well put together dance music that both critics and fans can like. I am surprised she hasn't released a video either, feels like one is needed!
