There's a chance, though I think what's accelerated The Pogues' decline is its lack of international (specifically stateside) popularity. Spotify in particular is very geared to the US so the playlists reflect that a little more and The Pogues end up under-represented. That mixed with the fact I'd argue it's probably a more dated song in its sheer concept than Mariah/Wham! has probably contributed to a decline, but obviously it's still extremely popular.

It's very low down on the Spotify Christmas playlist and as we all know those playlists basically dictate what Christmas songs do well.

I'm sure it will end up back in the chart before too long though but it clearly isn't at this point a Christmas classic.

No sign of Merry Christmas then? Have people forgotten about it already?

Only Apple Music 101

Isn’t Last Christmas older than Fairytale of New York?

Yeh true think it’s big stateside and also George’s recent death and the film will have kept its popularity high.

It’s still on SCR so will likely chart officially a lot higher and is doing well on iTunes for some reason lol!

I all seriousness I do wonder if this will happen to a lot of other older songs as time goes by including Wham and Mariah?

Well Brenda Lee and Bobby Helms are doing exceptionally well and they're ancient - nah it's people playing a Spotify playlist and that's the December chart fixed largely.

Yeh the Bobby one especially charts here every year due to playlisting on Spotify, it’s not hugely a British classic!

Amazon right now:

#1 Mariah

#9 Wham!

#14 Brenda Lee

#17 Band Aid

#20 Shaky

#22 Bublé

#29 Wizzard

#33 Ed & Elton

#34 Elton - SIC

[#35 Three Lions - the original I presume]

#37 Slade

#38 Bobby Helms

#39 & #61 Stormzy - Firebabe

#40 Chris Rea

#46 Ariana

#49 Leona

#50 Lizzo - Someday At Christmas

Wondering if Kate Bush's 'December will be magic again' has a chance of breaking through this year after the success of 'Running up that Hill'. Probably a bit too leftfield but one can hope.

Actually scratch that. Realised its not even on Spotify (not sure why) so obviously her or the label have no desire for it to be more than a relatively obscure gem.

With 1st December being on a Thursday this year and therefore Spotify and Apple streams estimated, I don't think we'll see as big a surge within the one week as we have in the last couple of years.
Will Mariah and Wham be top 5 next Friday then given this weekends streams or will what you say about 1st dec falling on Thursday hinder that?
