I can only see 13 songs on that list for Elton (including the 3 within Cold Heart)? I wondered if he might have a co-write in Are You Ready For Love? I guess last year's the LadBaby song should give him an extra week at #1 too, although it's the same song as Merry Christmas.

My Bad I forgot to list "The Man" in his chart toppers but he should have just 14 not 15- altered. It doesn't change his position though. I haven't given any writer another No 1 for "Sausage Rolls" as it is essentially the same song but it does contribute to the weeks at No 1 tally.
#nospoilers but it’s so frustrating ! I think I know four of the final five but I can’t think of the fifth one for the life of me hahah
#7 is missing right?! Sorry Gezza don’t want it to sound like we’re constantly nit-picking in your fantastic thread! :D

Hmm. To be honest I'd probably include 'Sausage Rolls' as, even though it has the same melody, pretty much all the lyrics are different from the original.

You can give an extra to Elton if you want- won't change his position :D

You know Steve Mac. He started out as one half of Nomad (“I Wanna Give You Devotion” #2 in 91) before moving on to be part of Undercover (“Baker Street” #2 in September 1992). His chart topping days arrived when he worked with Westlife co-penning 4 No 1’s for them, and more recently even Clean Bandit and Ed Sheeran has realised his worth.

I know of Steve Mac but didn't realise until now that he was part of Nomad and Undercover!

And speaking of Sheeran, he’s often derided on Buzzjack but the truth is he is already the 4th most successful songwriter of all time on this matrix! No writer has demonstrated a bigger domination over the charts over the past decade and who knows how far he can reach on this survey ultimately! He’s one of three people to have spent over a year at No 1 as a songwriter.

“Don’t need another wordsmith to make my tunes sell” (Ed Sheeran, 2011)

Perfect is the only #1 solely composed by Sheeran.

Caught up with this thread and today I learned of a few songs with big name co-writers that I did not know about and seem a bit surprising - Drake on 'R.I.P.' (I see that was written for Rihanna originally which makes the Drake connection make a lot more sense), Madonna on that one Gary Barlow song (I don't blame her not wanting to release that one herself x) and Elton John on 'I Don't Feel Like Dancin''.

Pretty sure I know who all of the top 3 will be, intrigued to see how far ahead they will be.

Have to say I'm not sure I quite understand counting 'Cold Heart' as 3 separate #1s in the tallies of Elton and Bernie Taupin but hey ho, I trust you had some kind of consistent logic here...! (I assume that doesn't mean you also counted it as 3 weeks?)

  • Author
No they counted as just as 1 week in total. It was because it contained samples of 4 Elton songs only one of which had made no 1 before. If they were all written by different people I would have had to credit each writer separately so I followed that logic.

I still don't understand this logic. It is still one song (Cold Heart) that reached #1. Those three songs didn't claim the #1 spot on their own. They are not #1 songs.

It's not that much of an issue really.

Although if StarsOn 45 had reached #1...

Imagine the alternative. Let's say that someone made a mash up of "Common people/ love the way you lie/ and "moves like jagger" then each of the writers of that song (let's call it "common love moves" for ease) would have got a credit even though only one song got to No 1. I followed this logic- just because they are all written by the same people on "Cold Heart" isn't a reason to play down their contribution.

But as others say you can apply whatever rules you want to it :D

A whopping 20 chart toppers evidence what a mark Max Martin has had on the UK charts, Martin started out in a group called It’s Alive which were signed to Cheiron label so it was a natural home when Martin quit the band in 95 to concentrate on writing. He’s since had a period of 21 years of chart toppers with multiple million sellers.
