Danni Wyatt warmed up for potential involvement in the Women's Ashes series with 50 off 28 balls as Southern Vipers retained the Charlotte Edwards Cup.

The Blaze, who were 53-4 in the 10th over when rain halted play on Saturday, managed to push their total to 114-8.

Wyatt and Maia Bouchier made the most of the powerplay fielding restrictions with an opening stand of 67 in reply.

Nadine de Klerk had Wyatt lbw in the 11th over, but Vipers finished the job on 118-3 with 34 balls to spare.

Skipper Georgia Adams edged successive boundaries off Sophie Munro as she finished the match 16 not out, with Freya Kemp - who struck Lucy Higham for a superb straight six in the previous over - on 13.

England stunned Edgbaston by declaring against Australia on the first day of an Ashes series that more than lived up to the hype.

Joe Root's masterful unbeaten 118 pulled England from 176-5 to 393-8 when captain Ben Stokes executed the earliest first-innings declaration in Ashes history.

This is delicately poised going into the last day with Australia needing 174 to win with 7 wickets left. I hope there is enough good weather tomorrow to ensure a result.

Coach Brendon McCullum says England will go "harder" at Australia after their agonising two-wicket defeat in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

Ninth-wicket pair Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon got Australia to their target of 281 with a stand of 55.

The first Test was characterised by a clash of styles - England looking to be aggressive and Australia more cautious.

"I'm sure they'll stick to that strategy, which is great because we'll go a little harder," said McCullum.

England will look to level the series in the second Test at Lord's, which begins next Wednesday.

The defeat at Edgbaston was only England's third in 14 Tests since McCullum and captain Ben Stokes took charge at the beginning of last summer.

Michael Leask edged a four off the final ball to secure a dramatic one-wicket win for Scotland over Ireland in their World Cup Qualifier Group B game.

Curtis Campher's superb 120 had helped Ireland to a total of 286-8, with Brandon McMullen taking 5-34.

Scotland looked to be in trouble at 122-6 but Leask's brilliant unbeaten 91 saw them snatch victory in a thriller.

Incredible performance by Tammy Beaumont in England's first innings of the only Test of the Women's Ashes.

Brandon McMullen's powerhouse 136 led Scotland to the Super Six stage of the World Cup Qualifier with a 76-run win over Oman.

McMullen registered the highest total in the tournament as Scotland finished 320 all out, with Bilal Khan taking five wickets.

Only Naseem Khushi was able to make a significant score in Oman's chase, but he was caught on 69 by Chris McBride.

The Scots finish Group B against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (08:00 BST).

Scotland sustained their first defeat of the World Cup Qualifier as Sri Lanka won by 82 runs in Bulawayo.

With both sides already through to the Super Six stages, Chris Greaves took four wickets during Sri Lanka's innings of 245 all out, Pathum Nissanka top scoring on 75.

The Scots lost half their wickets early on and despite Greaves' 56 not out, they were all out for 163 in reply.

Scotland next face West Indies on Saturday (08:00 BST).

England have included Josh Tongue in an all-pace attack on a green-tinged Lord's pitch for the second Ashes Test against Australia.

Tongue replaces off-spinner Moeen Ali, who was fit despite suffering a cut spinning finger in the first Test loss at Edgbaston.

"We turned up at Lord's and saw there was quite a lot of grass on the pitch," said England captain Ben Stokes.

"We thought we would get more out of our fourth bowler being Josh Tongue."

Though Moeen, 36, has been able to bowl in the nets this week, there remained a concern that he would be susceptible to a recurrence of the finger injury.

The Women's Ashes aren't going too well either. I am surprised at the omission of Charlie Dean, she is a wicket machine.
