May 5, 20232 yr Author Rain probably the only thing that will make it worth watching...although they'll probably spend the entire time behind the safety car if there is anymore than light drizzle.
May 5, 20232 yr Well the expectations pre-Baku were high and we ended up with a snoozefest so given the expectations for Miami are (Hard) Rock bottom maybe we'll be rewarded with a thriller, one can hope. Edited May 5, 20232 yr by Dobbo.
May 6, 20232 yr Author If there was a Driver of the Day award for qualifying... KMag. P4 in the Haas, on pace. Blimey.
May 6, 20232 yr Author This is the first time Fernando Alonso has qualified on the front row in a dry qualifying session since the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix
May 8, 20232 yr Even with a mixed up grid it wasn't the best of entertainment. Max breezing through because no one sees any point losing time defending the inevitable, and most overtakes coming later on as those who'd done the alternative Hard > Medium strategy breezed through on newer, softer compounds.
May 8, 20232 yr I think the best overtake was Max doing a 2in1 early on, on Charles and KMag (I think..?). But otherwise the only really remarkable thing about the race for me was that Alpine actually scored points. Fairly uneventful and unremarkable tbh. Plenty of comedy throughout the weekend tho with Lewis „three yellow sectors littered with driver errors“ Hamilton immediately crying on the radio at the end of Q2 that his team left it too late to send him out on a track that evolves so much you actually want to be the last person to set a time being a real highlight in the comedy stakes There was plenty of overtakes but as you say RFC most of those were from tyre disparities and were kinda inevitable. Tho Ham taking 40 years to overtake Albon in the Williams and Charles taking the same amount of time to dispatch KMag we’re the two worst overtakes mainly because of how long it took given how actually inevitable they were on paper. Less so the Ferrari/Haas as the two are closer in performance than Merc/Williams and less so again when you factor in that the Merc was piloted by the alleged goat
May 8, 20232 yr Worst event on the calendar (until we get to Vegas I suspect) Tacky presentation, a featureless, boring track and even a mixed up grid couldn't make it any less predictable. Sadly, we've got another 7 years at least of this crap and we're likely to lose Spa before then. Best bit was Alonso watching Stroll on TV. Fair play to Gale though, her version of the Star Spangled Banner (a song I'm no fan of) was the best rendition I've heard in years.
May 8, 20232 yr I refuse to watch anything other than the race and qualifying at these types of race, just no interest at all in any of the additional enforced celebrity focussed show.
May 8, 20232 yr I turned on the pre-show on sky (de) and it was midway through that announcement cringefest and I promptly put United being inexcusably woeful against west ham back on until the start time I’d be really interested to see what US fans made of it to see if they also found it icky or if it’s a very European reaction to something quite American (and all the layers and barely concealed disdain that comes with)
May 8, 20232 yr Author Miami Review: Best driver: Worst driver: Best team: Worst team: Best overtake: Worst overtake: Best moment: Worst moment: Best thing about the race: Worst thing about the race: And the race in a sentence
May 8, 20232 yr Best driver: Verstappen Worst driver: Leclerc (when considering talent vs performance - otherwise Sargeant) Best team: Red Bull Worst team: McLaren Best overtake: Max on Magnussen and Leclerc) Worst overtake: Most were dull DRS affairs Best moment: Alonso commenting on Stroll's overtake Worst moment: The pre-race driver announcements Best thing about the race: Great first stint by Verstappen on the hards Worst thing about the race: Liberty Media will call it a huge success and there'll do more of the surrounding nonsense And the race in a sentence - Peerless Verstappen puts Perez back in his place Edited May 8, 20232 yr by Severin
May 8, 20232 yr No more 'glitz and glamour with no excitement in the actual race' than Monaco and we'll still get that every year.
