If anyone cares about complete historical accuracy, I will point out that last week I accidentally swapped Ed Sheeran & Steve Lacy's similarly titled songs, which I didn't catch because honestly those trajectories look more reasonable than what actually happened that week, but anyway yes, the former is the more popular one right now.

For only the 3rd time this year, we have a new #1. I don't know if there's any proof that moving into the #1 spot is a 'big deal' that generates more buzz, but it is interesting to me that "Last Night" is showing big gains again after seemingly fading on Spotify lately. If it's true though, we could see some galvanising that'll solidify Morgan Wallen at #1 for a while because I'm not sure what's supposed to take over. David Kushner is maybe hoping for a top 5 debut but I'm not yet convinced this isn't another one of those "Fingers Crossed" type deals that fade once the radio audience doesn't replace the TikTok audience fast enough. On an unrelated note, Drake debuts in the top 10, and won't be in the top 10 next week, you know the drill. Unless the last two days are a complete aberration, perhaps Glass Animals will be back to extend their reign for longest running top 10 hit ever. I noticed the other day that Ed Sheeran's "Shivers" became one of a very small group of songs that have been in the ARIA top 10 in 3 different calendar years. The only other non-Christmas songs I can think of that have done this are "Black Or White" and "I Will Always Love You", but "Heat Waves" could join this odd group next week. If not, at least it was a good excuse for me to research this odd curiosity. Speaking of songs that are allergic to not being in the chart, Lewis Capaldi is back with another attempt to have the longest reigning top 50 hit of all time. "Someone You Loved" is back up to #30 this week and is still making gains on Spotify well over a week after the documentary came out, which might be because he was announced as a sort of headliner for Splendour In The Grass. The rule of inertia means that the song could continue to remain in the top 50 for a long time. On an unrelated note, "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac is also back. I feared there might only be one Australian song in the top 50 this week but against all odds, "Love Again" survived another week and "Rhyme Dust" even snuck back in. Lastly, NLE Choppa gets his first ever chart entry here. He's made the Spotify chart a few times before but I don't recall what's actually been let on the ARIA Chart before.

"Rhyme Dust"'s return also prevents the New Music chart from tying its record on Christmas for having only 8 songs in the top 50. We might be safe from that list getting smaller in the near future with David Kushner & Labrinth climbing up, and maybe Kanii can reach the top 50 next week too, hard to tell with the two versions.

For the first time this year, we have an Australian artist at #1. It comes from perennial stalwarts Cub Sport hitting #1 for the first time in their career. In case you were wondering, Cub Sport have been around since 2010. For a few years they were known as Cub Scouts but then got an injunction from Scouts Australia. They'd released a bunch of EPs but didn't actually put out a full length until 2016, and it's not unreasonable to say that the song "Come On Mess Me Up" sent them to the relative stratosphere. Around the same time, the lead singer came out and married the keyboard player, with many of their songs of late exploring this relationship. This new #1 keeps off NF, who can take solace in now having hit the 3 highest prime number ranks on the chart. Linkin Park return to the top 10 with "Meteora". You'd think it would've been a sure bet for #1 back in 2003 but unfortunately they chose to release it on the same week as Delta Goodrem's debut album, the first of 29 weeks that "Innocent Eyes" spent at #1. Lower down, Cub Sport were actually beaten on the vinyl chart this week by Frenzal Rhomb who score their 4th top 20 peak, having gotten as high as #9 in 2017. It's been almost 20 years since Jay from Frenzal made a fool out of Kyle Sandilands in a radio interview and we're still stuck with him on the airwaves being generally awful. The 1975 are back on the album chart corresponding with them playing shows here recently. Daniel Caesar gets his second top 50 album, and has been on a pretty solid run of singles lately in my opinion. Next week is Metallica's for the taking and perhaps The Wolfe Brothers can provide our weekly Australian contingent.

Do we know what caused Green Green Grass to finally take off over here? Twelve months after it’s release.

surprised Higher than Heaven didn't do anything

Miracle doesn't seem to be as popular as in the UK either

Do we know what caused Green Green Grass to finally take off over here? Twelve months after it’s release.

I'd say it's similar to whatever's boosting it back up in the UK. Ours is a bit more exaggerated because it's got a playlisting boost on Spotify it didn't have before, and I guess it's a little less overexposed if that matters. Though for what it's worth it already had a radio run here last year that went nowhere (it's only improved its radio peak by 1 position so far this year).

"Last Night" is #1 for a second week, but will it be the last night? No. Not just because the charts come out on Friday and are dated for the Monday so there's guaranteed time to soak up the sun, but also because it'll almost certainly be #1 again next week. There's momentum for David Kushner on Spotify this week though I'm suspicious that it might be built on algorithms. If that turns out to be the case I will make sure not to needlessly neg the song for a 3rd week in a row. It's doing quite well for him in any case, he previously got to #36 with "Miserable Man" last year. Luke Combs also has his first ever top 10 hit this week, and the 3rd version of "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman to make the top 10. Time will tell if we ever increase the number of versions of "Fast Car" by Taio Cruz to make the top 10, we're currently at a steady 0. Fifty Fifty are also in the top 10 for the first time ever. Post Malone debuts at #14, and seems to be declining slightly on Spotify, so that could be the overall peak. I have no idea what will happen with Post Malone's new compilation and whether or not it will sabotage his first three albums' near permanent residency on the top 50 hip-hop/R&B charts despite a sometimes dubious claim to those genres. Labrinth is new in the top 50 and is the latest recipient of a funny timing on an autoplay algorithm that is completely misrepresented on the chart. So he'll probably climb but you'd have no way of knowing he was #8 on Spotify not long ago. J. Cole is back again with "No Role Modelz" which is an excuse to highlight that it has spent 25 weeks between #43 and #50. I don't know if there are still people who draw the line at the top 40 for representing a hit but they are surely letting their dislike of J. Cole cloud reasonable judgement if they're still at it. The highest selling song to not reach the top 50 is probably "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey which peaked at #100 (it may have been higher if let back on the chart in 2009 but my memory of the incident is foggy), or "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol which technically peaked at #52 but only because it took a year to be included. "The Nosebleed Section" by Hilltop Hoods was not a commercial single back in 2003 but eventually peaked at #75 a couple of years ago. It regularly outsells the rest of their catalogue and is probably another contender. The biggest one with no dubious incident behind it is possibly "Ni**as In Paris" even with several years of not being on Spotify. It's currently not on the ARIA survey to my knowledge as a consequence of that but it's not on track to match its #66 peak anyway.

To note on the Bubbling Under chart, Lewis Capaldi looks to be relying on an algorithm to make the top 50 next week as he just snuck into the Spotify top 50 after a very suspicious one day climb on Friday that stopped very suddenly the next day. Sam Barber is here to prove that Australia is interested in more than just 3 country singers, while also probably providing the first ARIA top 100 hit written by Samuel Barber since William Orbit's version of "Adagio For Strings". Yes it's a very good joke, no need to thank me. As is often the case, the 'debut' for Barber on this chart implies that it was submitted for tracking after blowing up 2 weeks ago, and so there was a one week lag before ARIA added it to their data. The same is also true of Jack Black, and I'll just use this opportunity to point out that Tenacious D's "Tribute" was a massive hit in Australia, talking, #15 on the 2002 End Of Year list, wedged closely between "Lose Yourself" and "Hot In Herre" big.

Metallica score their 8th #1 album this week. Clearly they were made famous by Stranger Things. Once again we have 2 Australian albums debuting in the top 50, and 2 Australian albums in the top 50. This week's honours go to The Wolfe Brothers who pick up their 4th top 10 album, and The Wiggles who are also familiar to this rodeo or so I'm told. Next week Australian music is ready to be saved again, by Bluey.

"Last Night" is #1 for a 3rd week. It's showing signs of slipping but also every now and then gets a new jolt of energy. In any case nothing is close to overtaking. It turns out I was right to ridicule David Kushner because "Daylight" tanked dramatically this week, but is showing signs of recovery now. Maybe the real one to watch is Fifty Fifty who have been vaulting up the streaming charts and I could see them reaching the top 3 next week. The Weeknd arrives in the top 10 with "Double Fantasy", for which I must preserve ARIA's funny typo of a listing that's still on the website. As his penchant is to not quite reach the top 10 normally, this is just Future's second top 10 hit after "Way 2 Sexy". "Heat Waves" drops to quite a bit lower than it was 2 weeks ago which to me implies that there's been an overcorrection after last week's oddity. There are two debuts this week. Firstly Lewis Capaldi who seems to have had a convenient algorithm boost to solidify a top 50 position so he'll potentially drop back a bit next week but it won't be the end of the world. The other top 50 entry proves it's a good week for cupid as he hits me with precision in allowing Tyler, The Creator to score a top 50 hit with "See You Again". The vast majority of Tyler's top 50 hits spent a single week in, but this looks like it will continue to climb next week. It's also Kali Uchis' second top 50 hit after "telepatia", although ARIA have neglected to put her name on it. It also got upgraded to triple platinum status this week which puts it probably on par in lifetime sales with bafflingly perennial hit "Sunroof" which you probably scrolled past on the chart but yes, it's still here. In Australian music update, things got increasingly bleak as "STAY" is now out of the top 50 and "Rhyme Dust" also surprisingly slipped out. If you even want to dignify "Cold Heart" as counting, even that's starting to approach an exit. "Riptide" is #13 on Spotify right now which is its highest ever position in the 3105 days that kworb's been tracking it, although I know with certainty that it got to #1 for a week at the start of 2014 after triple j's Hottest 100, still before streams counted to the official chart.

For this week's Bubbling Under chart, we note "Boat". Sam Barber is climbing fast though and might be the only new entry in the top 50 next week. There's basically nothing else within striking distance right now although I shall root for "Money Trees" to get some action because it's creeping curiously high lately. It is amusing how particularly ancient the bottom end of the top 50 is though, with "Wish You The Best" at #34 being the lowest song that's actually from this year. It'll keep the new hits afloat though for now, with nothing close to slipping out and only "Flowers" poised to age out in the near future.

Morgan Wallen returns to #1 on the album chart, achieving the rare double. I want to say it's a rarer double that neither are debuts but honestly the #1 single/#1 album debut double is not particularly common unless you're Taylor Swift. The highest debut this week goes to Agust D at #4, though he previously made #2 back in 2020. We regrettably only have one Australian album in the top 50 again, oddly enough it's Bluey. Bluey previously had a #1 album in 2021, which interestingly enough, held off The Kid LAROI temporarily on his quest for a #1 album. This time Bluey can only manage #7 and I have no idea if a second week in the top 50 is on the cards. I'm not sure what to expect next week, possibly Peach PRC's 6 track EP will count to the chart but I don't think Morgan Evans' 5 track EP will. Potentially set to make it tougher to do so is the new Post Malone chart occupier. However, we must remember that the ARIA Charts are funny like that, and so what I gather is that only the crossover tracks from "Hollywood's Bleeding" have been included because it's the only Post Malone album that saw a significant shift down the chart this week. HOWEVER, I can't make the maths make sense with just 3 tracks counting. I'll keep an eye on this one. Taylor Swift lands a new entry which is mostly just notable because she now has 8 simultaneous top 50 albums, which I'm sure bothers no one because they're real albums (ironically she's probably an artist whose positions wouldn't change much if big hit songs dominating were taken out of the equation). Tiesto has what is only his 3rd ever top 50 album here. Lower down we have two of those big new entries on the UK album chart that are so on the edge of the top 50 you have to wonder if any excited campaigning splashing out to here by accident helped them over the line. Everything But The Girl previously had two top 50 albums both with respectable longevity. Enter Shikari also only have had two previously and they only started getting them in 2012, even though I remember being scared shitless when I saw the music video for "Sorry, You're Not A Winner" back in 2007, but with time I accept it as an all-time banger.

"Last Night" is #1 for a 4th week. This could potentially be its last week as FIFTY FIFTY are vaulting up the chart. They have a pretty hefty lead on Spotify and YouTube but are behind elsewhere. For now they're #2 which makes it the equal 3rd highest charting K-Pop song in history. BTS got to #2 with "Dynamite", while we've had #1 hits in "Gangnam Style" and "Pink Venom", the big two. My David Kushner shade is justified as his streams retreated back this week. An interesting climb to note this week is "Calm Down", which gets a new peak in its 35th week on the chart. I have to look further into this but it's looking like climbing again next week and I suspect it might be the slowest ever climb into the top 10 if so. Also an interesting climb this week is for "Wish You The Best", which has been retreating on streams but had a bizarre boost on YouTube. I'm not sure what to make of it, but with it currently #43 on Apple and #53 on Spotify, one has to suspect that the low on-demand streaming is gonna catch up with it eventually. New in the top 50 this week is Sam Barber who is doing curiously well in Australia compared to other markets. Once upon a time Australia was a proving ground for future global hits.

For the Bubbling Under chart, we arrive upon that Haddaway remake that I have been carefully avoiding so far. Jack Harlow also sneaks in an entry though I'm not certain he's even made the ARIA top 100 with this. Ed Sheeran may be able to populate the upper end of this chart next week, although my gut feeling at the moment is that he'll have 3 songs in the top 50 this week. For comparison, "=" had 6 songs in the top 50 on release week, 3 of which were debuts.

Another week on the album chart, another week of no second weeks for Australian artists. Maybe things can be different this time because we actually have one at #1. The TikTok era has been brutal for Australian artists trying to break out, but maybe the only major exception is Peach PRC, who has amassed a huge following on the platform. She hasn't really lit up the charts as of yet but she's racking up Hottest 100 entries. This week's #1 album is an interesting one as it might just be the shortest running #1 album ever. Last year Huskii got to #1 with an EP that ran for 19 minutes but this 6 track EP skirts hard on the line of eligibility and is also just shy of 18 minutes. The biggest single from it heavily interpolates "Stars Are Blind" by Paris Hilton. Elsewhere this week, The National have their 4th consecutive top 10 album though with a not particularly optimistic trajectory. Their best selling album "High Violet" only peaked at #29. Jack Harlow also now can claim both of the least desired peaks in his discography, following up his #2 peaking album last year with a #11 peak this week. Lastly we have a new entry for Kip Moore, who has previously made the top 10 twice. This week also showcases the funny second weeks of Post Malone & Tiesto, letting us know how much of their performance last week was just based on incidental streaming. Next week you have to imagine is Ed Sheeran's for the taking, while I think there's a posthumous Olivia Newton-John album to save Australian music for another week.

"Last Night" is #1 for a 5th week. I have to imagine this was a remarkably tight margin as FIFTY FIFTY made up a lot of ground in this week but have fallen just barely short. It looks also like this was their best shot as the week so far is trending back to Morgan Wallen. Ed Sheeran vaults back into the top 10 but doesn't quite get a new peak, however seemingly has prevented Rema from a remarkably belated #11 peak. "Calm Down" is also retreating this week so it'll be a tough ask to get any higher. Ed Sheeran has just the two top 50 debuts this week with "Curtains" and "Boat", though both are receding fast, maybe "Life Goes On" might make a better impression next week. Anyway, this is all window dressing for the biggest news of the week/year(?), "Riptide" is back. I forget the last time I explained this, but "Riptide" is the most enduring hit ever in some ways, having never left the Spotify top 200 for a single week since first appearing there a little over 10 years ago. There are no records of it on kworb but I have it on my own authority that it actually topped the Spotify chart in early 2014. On one week in 2020, the song vanished without explanation from the ARIA Chart. My theory for this relates to the fact that the song constantly has its crediting switched between the single and the EP, in fact it was last seen as "God Loves Us When We're Dancing - EP" on the chart. This sort of thing could easily cause a clerical error that erases it from the chart. The song ebbs and flows on the Spotify chart but has been on a particularly good stride lately, actually getting its highest daily position since early 2014 (#12). This makes me believe that it could've squeaked the top 20 last week, which brings in my second pet theory. The ARIA Chart is riddled with errors, but usually once you reach the top 20, things are cleared up. However, my understanding with ARIA is that they tend to take a week to process these things, so "Riptide" is re-entering this week in response to its last week performance. This is a far cry from the ARIA of 10 years ago that issued a public correction when Troy Cassar-Daley had erroneous sales counted to put him ahead of Kanye West on the album chart. In theory, we should be prepared for a lengthy tenure going on, which should at least stop us from having 0 Australian entries in the near future. This also means that it's the most accurate top 50 in a long time, however in saying that, it's possible that "Princess Diana" should be in the top 50 but is missing. Frank Ocean's "Pink + White" (and "Blonde" for that matter) is also forever missing just below the top 50.

On the Bubbling Under side of things with songs that are actually being counted. Bring Me The Horizon are back. They've actually had a decent handful of chart entries, including top 50 entries for "Drown", and featuring on MGK's "maybe". The former was actually their first ever singles chart entry and was aided by weeks of pre-ordering, as was the style at the time. At this point they'd already had 2 #1 albums and they've picked up 3 more since.

Ed Sheeran scores his 6th #1 album, you probably don't need me to tell you what the other 5 were. We have a surprisingly healthy supply of Australian entries this week, which comes with a peculiar chart stat that someone on Facebook noticed and I will share. #3 this week is "Flowers", on both charts. I tried to no avail to see if this has ever happened before (with different artists ofc) and the closest I found was that Neon Trees and Kesha had their respective "Animal"s 1 position apart on the singles & albums charts at one point in early 2011. As for the album itself, we are still dealing with the remnants of this year's Hottest 100, as Pacific Avenue picked up their first entry with "Leaving For London". Supposedly that is, my iTunes shuffle playlist doesn't ever seem to want to play it so I don't recall it very well. In any case, that song made it onto this album 4 months later. It's their first album and they come with a pretty decent showing at #3. Also on that Australian tilt in the top 10 is Brad Cox, with a new high for him, having previously entered at #12 back in 2020. Vaguely sandwiched between is The Smashing Pumpkins, who after a pretty lousy showing in 2020, have their highest charting album in over 2 decades. It's their 8th top 10 peak. Joji returns on the back of vinyl sales and we also have new entries for Guardians of the Galaxy and a posthumous ONJ. This is fairly underwhelming for GOTG as the first two volumes peaked at #2, and also had very lengthy chart runs, but we'll have to see how this one follows through. Next week's top challenger will likely be perennial #1 peakers The Amity Affliction (although their last album missed out). There's also the annual Eurovision album entry. In case you're wondering, only Sweden & Finland's entries popped into the Spotify top 200 over here last night, so I'm not expecting any singles chart impact (which is the norm for the past few years).

"Last Night" is #1 for a 6th week. Any declines it ever shows on the streaming chart is matched by anything near it, so I can't see the current crop unsettling it unless we get one of those screwy remixes or something. David Kushner does manage a new peak and could keep climbing given there's nothing else to do the same. Mind you our top two debuts should continue to climb but I suspect they don't have that full cross-market popularity to go far enough. Lil Mabu charts for the first time and Lil Durk has his first ever lead artist entry. Featured J. Cole actually re-climbs to the #43 peak of "No Role Modelz", but maybe it is a spiritual new peak because "Riptide" is on the chart now and wasn't when it peaked last year. Maybe he'll just get a new peak next week anyway. Speaking of songs not being included, the debut for Ed Sheeran this week strongly suggests that at least some of his album tracks weren't included last week. Given that sequence of events, it lines up well for Luke Combs being credited on "Life Goes On". Last week Coldplay announced a second show in Perth, and despite my frequent assertion that nobody actually lives here, it's enough of a reason for "Viva la vida" to re-enter the top 50 for the first time since 2009 (I believe this was also when Coldplay were touring Australia). I don't think it would've quite gotten there, but to my knowledge, ARIA is not counting "Yellow" which achieved similarly high streaming numbers this week.

Just missing the top 50 this week is Kali, who almost certainly will get there next week.

Ed Sheeran does what he couldn't do in 2021 and achieves a second week at #1 with his album. In the process we're prevented another Australian #1 album from The Amity Affliction. They had a string of #1's in the 2010s but don't quite have that same reliable fanbase to do it anymore. They do still lead the pack of Australian entries in the top 10 though, with Kate Ceberano and Midnight Oil also entering. I don't have Midnight Oil's chart history on hand but this is Kate's 8th top 10 album. Guardians of the Galaxy indeed do make a big climb this week, I don't know if "Dog Days Are Over" is being counted on the chart, but it might be in the top 100 if so. Daft Punk return with a re-issue, while this year's ESC album appears lower than last year, but higher than the year before that. It's a big week for The Album in the middle of the chart, in addition to Morgan Wallen at #30, we've got a new The Album from Jonas Brothers, and a new The Album from Bailey Zimmerman. Next week I imagine is Lewis Capaldi's to take although he's not exactly lighting up the streaming chart. He'll make history either way.

"Last Night" is #1 for a 7th week. It is dropping, but not as fast as anything near it so its lead is getting incredulously larger, while simultaneously our country is not interested in discovering anything new to take over. Of note this week, J. Cole has his first ever top 10 hit, guesting on "All My Life". Lana Del Rey has been allowed to debut on the chart, as has Kylie Minogue and Post Malone. Why yes that is an unusual way to phrase that but of course I must note that Beyonce was not given such liberty. Kali also jumps into the top 50 for the first time. Tragically the original Ludacris & Nate Dogg track never quite did. Also Lewis Capaldi makes history again as "Someone You Loved" is again the equal longest running top 50 hit. I am using top 100 weeks here, but on top 50 weeks, it equals "Blinding Lights" on 136, and with them both gaining 1 per week, it makes it quite difficult for "Heat Waves" to catch up which is 7 weeks behind. Lewis will be in the country again in July so any suspicion that the song is starting to drop off is irrelevant, we're never getting rid of it.

That being said with a busy week of new entries, the Bubbling Under chart is slim on giving us new information. After all this time though, "Baby Don't Hurt Me" has gotten the playlist treatment (and quite high up too) which is rocketing it up, not to the extent that it's threatening the top 50 yet but give it time.

For the first time ever, Lewis Capaldi is #1 in Australia. In fact the #4 peak of "Someone You Loved" was the highest he'd ever charted before. One may be skeptical of the album's futures though, given that it debuted at #9 on the Spotify album chart, with the previous album not far behind at #15, so it might not even be his most streamed album on Spotify next week. It also means we miss out on a philosophical debate as to whether or not a soundtrack album counts to John Farnham's hefty tally of #1 albums, given his name is in the title but not the artist credit. We've got a rare sighting of a metal band formed in the last 10 years, with Sleep Token getting their first chart appearance all the way up at #3. Also charting for the first time is Australian band The Vanns with their second album. They are otherwise most famous for doing a cover of Bon Iver's "Hey, Ma". Bad//Dreems have charted a bunch of times before but score their first ever top 10 this week. Lower down we have a Best Of from Pete Murray, who you can read as Dean Lewis for millennials, and also Tina Turner, who I suspect could chart higher next week given the timing of things for this week, but I'm not really sure how all the streaming data gets divvied out, I never am. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has taken a break from working with Elvis to hang out with Def Leppard, and that results in a top 50 charter. I also must of course note more ARIA silliness, as Kanye West's "Graduation" has appeared out of nowhere for the first time since 2007. I suspect it wouldn't have been in the top 50 previously and only climbs in now because "Flashing Lights" and "I Wonder" have been popping off in streams lately and probably some other tracks are too, to an extent. I still think "Graduation" is Kanye West's worst album until "JESUS IS KING" came out so I do not endorse this increasing zoomer narrative that it's actually his masterpiece.

"Last Night" is #1 for an 8th week, but could this be it? You're probably aware of Dave & Central Cee putting out an EP this week and "Sprinter" is making an Usain Bolt dash for the top spot. Only I don't have enough info to really call the race. You'd think the 115K gap they pushed last night on Spotify would be enough, but Morgan Wallen remains very solid on digital sales. He's also still #1 on Apple although that might be because "Sprinter" is split into two versions there and it's anyone's guess where #4 and #59 combined gets you there. No doubt though it'll be a new chart peak for both of them. Speaking of new peaks, it was almost a race last week except that "Karma" dropped off a cliff during the week and couldn't maintain its strength. So it did enough to pick up #2, a step up from its #9 peak last year (you could say this is the second time that it's been bested by only one non-Taylor Swift song). Taylor Swift also arrives a further two times in the top 20. Debuting behind them is Dua Lipa who I'm pretty sure will climb next week but we don't know yet if it's just algorithm funnies. Certainly Hot Hits Australia is being very kind to the song. Might also be worth noting that Dua Lipa still maintains having been in the top 50 every single week of this decade, and with "Cold Heart" perhaps finally being on the brink of leaving, it's good timing for this arrival. Tina Turner's sole return to the chart this week is "The Best", which is not her highest charting song ("What's Love Got To Do With It" and "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)" both hit #1), but it is a song with a certain connection to Australia, due to its use in advertisements for Rugby League. Or so I'm told. I live on the other side of the Barassi Line so I know hardly anything about the NRL. I have perhaps mentioned before that ARIA requires every entry on the chart to be manually submitted and if not done at the start of the tracking week, that can take a week to process. What I'm saying is that Beyonce belatedly arrives after being needlessly omitted last week (actually there's a point to Morgan Wallen's favour next week, we can't be certain Dave & Cench will absolutely chart). At long last, J. Cole's "No Role Modelz" is a top 40 hit, and in similar respects, after just missing the top 50 a few years ago, Kendrick Lamar has finally cracked the top 50 with "Money Trees". "Swimming Pools (Drank)" made the top 100 back in 2013 so this is actually the first ever top 50 entry from "good kid, m.A.A.d city", and I'm fairly sure it's also the only top 50 hit with writing credits for Beach House. Pog to be sure.

The abrupt arrival of Taylor Swift's entries effectively replaces some abrupt entries, as Ed Sheeran & Lil Mabu plummet quite hard this week. Kylie Minogue has faired a bit better (relatively), though I couldn't tell you if she's poised to climb back into the top 50 as her streaming gains need to better offset her digital declines.

Taylor Swift's deluxe antics naturally return her to the top spot on the album chart, which is unlucky for several artists who in fairness have seen the top spot before. The words Matchbox Twenty might not mean much in the UK, but they've always been a big deal over here. The majority of their albums + "Exile On Main Street" have all hit the top spot, and this new one is only their second to miss out (2002's "More Than You Think You Are" climbed to #3 in 2003, which of course means that Delta Goodrem was in front of them). Earlier this year I just so happened to see an episode of RocKwiz with Jimmy Barnes on it where he revealed the existence of a rockabilly super group with Chris Cheney from The Living End and Slim Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats. They've also got Kevin Shirley & Jools Holland in tow. That arrives this week as The Barnestormers, a pun that Jimmy Barnes has already used before for a 1988 live album which went to #1. On the more relaxed side of Australian rock & roll, we've got Boy & Bear, two time #1 album getters who reverse their fortune to arrive at #4 this week, after their last album only got to #9. My son Lil Durk gets his second top 50 album and first that's a solo project. Also going solo, we've got Mick Thomas and the Roving Commission charting for the first time. Who's that you say? Why Mick Thomas is the frontman for early '90s hit band Weddings, Parties, Anything, I'm sure that settles things.

oh nice for Lana to make the t 20

but what do you mean "she has been allowed to chart"?? she didn't do enough?

As per this week's commentary, ARIA works on a submission system, so there's no guarantee that a song/album will appear on the chart even if it's selling enough (eg, "Riptide" until a few weeks ago). I think but can't prove that ARIA might sometimes manually fix this if they notice an error, usually more common once something's top 20 bound. This is a simple submission form but it always takes a week to go through. In many cases this is a week too late and they don't get to chart at all as a result. So I was facetiously noting the songs that were 'allowed' to chart, because on the very same week, Beyonce was not, though I expected her to appear this week, and she did.

I'm busy but just want to note that ARIA erroneously claimed that "Sprinter" is the first UK rap song to hit #1, presumably forgetting about "Body" a couple of years ago. Haven't watched Spider-Verse yet, no spoilers thanks.

The great mystery has been answered, ARIA did not change the clunky comma separation on "Sprinter" on its second week. In any case it looks good for a 3rd week at #1 although it's slipping relatively fast and no, nothing is close to preventing "Last Night" from returning to #1. That said Luke Combs is climbing up, and I now inform you that he's outpeaked Tracy Chapman who has only the 3rd highest charting version of "Fast Car", Tobtok needs to hustle harder. Incredulously, Zach Bryan also got a new peak this week and is pacing to climb some more, in the quest to score the slowest ever climb to become a top 10 hit. All the Spider-Verse stuff is on the way up, and as such, "Self Love" is the only top 50 entry this week. Good movie that, also.

Bubbling Under, Dave & Central Cee are unlucky to not score some extra top 50 entries. BTS also debut but I expect all 3 of these entries to tank next week.

Niall Horan gets his first ever #1 album, having previously only ever peaked at #2. The Spider-Verse soundtrack reaches a new peak, quite a bit higher than the #11 peak of the first movie, and honestly it's a really impressive second week hold for Stray Kids. Noah Kahan never charted with the original release of his album, but this re-release gets him to #13. You might remember that several years ago he had one of the most Spotify-forced hits of the time with "Hurt Somebody", and also new song "Dial Drunk" is hovering just outside the top 50 on Spotify at the moment (not sure if it's missing from the New Music Chart or it just wasn't high enough). Extreme of "More Than Words" fame chart for the first time in 30 years, I'm unsure if their fanbase is pro-"More Than Words" or more pro all the other stuff that doesn't sound like it. Melbourne band GELD also sneak into the top 50 for their first ever chart appearance, while the highest Australian album this week is the vinyl re-issue of Savage Garden's first album. We're getting awful close to having no Australian albums in the top 50 but I assume The Teskey Brothers will at least do alright next week.

Did ARIA run out of budget to include any & symbols in new entries the last couple of weeks? Only commas in Dave/Central Cee, Playboi Carti/The Weeknd/third artist and all of the Spiderman songs

Yay for Dave and Cench ending the Wallen reign of terror for at least a few weeks anyways x and I'll count myself lucky to still live in an Anglosphere country that hasn't deemed this Luke Combs cover of 'Fast Car' worthy of a higher peak than the original. I'll stick with my at least slightly more transformative Metro Boomin Mario Winans covers...

Come on Kylie! :cheer:

"Sprinter" is #1 for a 3rd week. It looks reasonably safe for a 4th week, and its descent has been slowing down so it could stick ahead of "Last Night" for a little longer. Last week was Zach Bryan's shock boost to nearly top 10, this week "Calm Down" gets a new peak of #11. In a shock twist, we have an Australian song in the top 20, "Padam Padam" made the Spotify top 50 for a day this week. Doja Cat has the only debut of the week and also is already out of the Spotify top 50, it's another one of those times.

The Bubbling Under chart if nothing else, proves that Noah Kahan was on the chart last week. Lewis Capaldi will probably return to the top 50 next week, whereas I think Morgan Wallen's track will be removed from the New Singles chart next week.

The Teskey Brothers score their 2nd #1 album. It's no slouch of a week as they best Queens Of The Stone Age, whose last two albums went to #1. Behind them at #3 is local country singer Travis Collins, who scores his 6th top 50 entry and highest ever. The Australian version of Girls Aloud returning to the top 50 is that we have Dannii Minogue back in the top 50, actually scoring a new peak for "Neon Nights" which originally reached #25, and makes it now her highest charting album ever. Gunna also sneaks in with his 4th top 50 album. "fukumean" has just cracked the Spotify top 50 so we'll see how it goes as a rare new song in the chart.

"Sprinter" is #1 for a 4th week. Next week is very difficult to call. Dave & Cench continue to lose steam so Morgan Wallen who continues to sell well could take over again. Or maybe there's "Cruel Summer", which briefly got to #1 on Spotify this week, but might not have the legs to maintain for the next 2 days. If like me, you like the song but are fairly jaded by spurious copyright suits (I don't know who instigated it but they sure didn't stop it), then it's a lot easier to root for Olivia Rodrigo, who had a slightly slow start but is climbing up on Spotify day by day which could offset lower numbers elsewhere. Oh but speaking of Taylor Swift, everything is up. Everything. What's not immediately obvious though is that the ARIA Charts have done that thing again. Much like with Adele's "21" hits, the first two singles were able to remain on the survey perennially, but the rest faltered. In this case, all of her entries this week have managed to hang around, but "Style" which had no streaming to back it up through those trying 2015 & 2016 months did not. It should probably be slightly above "Blank Space" this week, which one should hope is high enough for the omission to be noticed and for it to return next week, but you never truly know with these things. I do now know that "Cold Heart" has cheated both a week at #1 and now a week at #50. I have not yet chosen to engage with the week's only debut, I'm sure it's great.

"Style" isn't the only song missing, as I suspect Gunna should have snuck onto the New Music chart with "fukumean". It does mean that J Hus sneaks through, with what I believe is his first ever Australian chart entry outside of the Ed Sheeran feature. There are actually only 4 'new' songs in the top 20 this week, and "Fast Car" is only barely still eligible for that, I suspect this is a record for non-Christmas time but it might also be a record overall.

In a truly bizarre turn of events, Taylor Swift has been beaten to the top by Kerser. I'm sure you're all familiar with him by now, but just in case, I'll refresh that he's an MC who's been around for over a decade releasing albums fairly regularly and charting high. I most recall back around 2011/2012 when he was feuding with 360 who at the time was much more popular, but it's fair to say that his fairweather fandom has faded faster than Kerser by now. This is Kerser's 8th top 10 album and his first ever to hit the top spot, which also means he's hit every position from #1 to #5. He continues to power along with no label backing or airplay. As for the non-Taylor Swift portion of the top 10, Maisie Peters is charting for the first time, and I must of course note that Trophy Eyes have debuted at #8 for the 3rd time in a row, it's the only chart position they've ever had because they always drop straight out of the top 50 the week after. This week's vinyl lottery winner is The Cruel Sea's classic album "The Honeymoon Is Over", aka the album that has the title track & "Black Stick" which as a not-actually-Gen X Aussie I can confirm are bangers. We've got the always rare instance of a video game soundtrack charting. I think it's the second time ever after Angus & Julia Stone's "Life Is Strange" soundtrack, but this time it's the slightly more notable "Minecraft" soundtrack, which got a vinyl release this week. Volume 2 also appeared on the vinyl chart so it's probably not far off the top 50 either. While Kelly Clarkson is usually prone to a top 10 debut, this #31 debut is still not actually a career low for her because her debut album, while long charting, only got to #33. Thugger lands in the middle of the chart as he tends to do, while Lastlings get in for the first time ever with their 2nd album. As a not-actually-Zoomer Aussie I can confirm they've made many a banger over the years.
