After an intriguing battle it ends with a Coolio victory. The California rapper had modest success with his debut album before unleashing the monster track Gangsta's Paradise in 1995 from the eponymously-titled second album. The song, which features singer LV, interpolates Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise and went on to top charts around the world. It's widely regarded as one of the greatest ever hip hop tracks and set Coolio on a path for several more big hits before the turn of the century. The track re-entered the chart in 2006 following his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother and again last year following his untimely death aged just 59.

Which means our runners-up here are legendary Mancunian rock band Oasis. After their hugely success debut album, their follow-up shot them into the stratosphere, at present it is the fifth best-selling album of all time in the UK. The eternal Wonderwall was the fourth single released from the album and has transcended society and culture perhaps like few other songs. It is an ever-present in many media's "best ever" lists and still streams well today. It is also notable for never reaching UK #1 despite its success, being held off by the not so legendary I Believe by good ol' Robson & Jerome. Oasis disbanded in 2009 and the Gallagher Brothers have enjoyed individual success ever since.

As always, thanks to those who participated in this survivor and 1996 will be following shortly.

Bitt disappointed with the result, ideally for me it would have been:

1 Missing

2 Wonderwall

3 Coolio

Has a hip-hop song ever won a survivor on this site before I wonder? Great winner anyways.
