Posted December 25, 200618 yr I thought this was better than nearly all episodes of the last series of Dr Who. Catherine Tate was excellent (although I did expect an 'Am I Bovvered' all the time!!) and the storyline was pretty good too. All in all, I was impressed ^_^
December 26, 200618 yr Certainly an improvement on about three quarters of series two... But yet AGAIN, it's a case of a modern day Earth/London setting....YAWN... I'm getting totally bored of the continuous Earth-bound nature of Dr Who; it's not as if there's any particular plot reason for it as there was during Jon Pertwee's tenure when the TARDIS was basically fukked and he was stranded... I did like idea of the Rachnos though. and the bit where the Doctor basically flushes the spiders down the plughole by flooding the pit with water from the Thames was pretty funny....
December 26, 200618 yr Was Santa init? There were killer robots dressed in Santa suits.... It was supposedly set during Christmas Eve, but the weather in the location shots made it look as though they'd actually filmed it in July or summat....
December 26, 200618 yr I felt Catherine Tate ruined an otherwise so-so episode. I kept expecting her to burst into one of her many catchphrases. She had none of the acting presence or chemistry with the Doctor that (Billie Piper) Rose had. Catherine was nowhere near as good as she was in Wild West or Bleak House. For a Christmas special I expected something much better than that. After last night's episode, knowing that the entire third series is going to be earthbound & realising the vacuum that the loss of Rose Tyler's character has made on the show. I'm really starting to fear the worse for the third series of the revived Dr Who. 6/10
December 26, 200618 yr i thought it was really good and although i have never seen catherine tate do an actual drama piece, i am used to see her doing comedy sketch scenes on her show. For her first time on a popular well known show i thought she was good although does not compare to billie piper (rose) from which who left the show, and considering it was an xmas special i suppose it was entertaining to watch as one of those shows for christmas TV.
December 26, 200618 yr I didn't like her acting at all. I fell asleep after the spider thing came on screen and didn't even see the end.
December 26, 200618 yr Author There were killer robots dressed in Santa suits.... It was supposedly set during Christmas Eve, but the weather in the location shots made it look as though they'd actually filmed it in July or summat....  2 points: Apparently it was filmed in the Summer  Secondly, I totally agree about the boring Cardiff/London setting, and I think I read somehwere that they keep them Earth based at its cheaper. I think thats a bit of a swizz, myself :(
December 26, 200618 yr The parallel earth thing annoys me aswell. That's another way of them being able to just film it in Cardiff/London. They filmed this on some of the hottest days of the year apparantly. Edited December 26, 200618 yr by x-The_Royston_Poisoner-x
December 26, 200618 yr I really liked it, SO good :o I thought Catherine Tate was good but I did keep expecting her to come out with a catchphrase. I was willing her to join the Doctor as his assistant at the end, but of course I knew it could never happen. It has made me excited in the series again
December 27, 200618 yr Secondly, I totally agree about the boring Cardiff/London setting, and I think I read somehwere that they keep them Earth based at its cheaper. I think thats a bit of a swizz, myself :( It's such a crock of sh!t excuse that is, since when was "Dr Who" all about big budgets or big SFX...? I remember the effects budget of "Babylon 5" wasn't exactly bloody huge, but they actually managed to come up with some pretty impressive alien landscapes... Time to ditch Russell T Davis, he's totally ruining the whole spirit of Dr Who.... "Torchwood" pisses on Dr Who, seriously.... Mind you, Russell doesn't actually write the scripts for "Torchwood" does he (he's only credited as being the creator of the show)....?
December 27, 200618 yr I thought it was alright. Catherine Tate was quite good. She was awful.... Cant act for sh!t... I actually found myself missing Billie Piper... All Tate did was shout in that incredibly loud, annoying chavvish voice of hers.... <_< Stick to the comedy sweetheart, straight acting just aint your thing....
December 27, 200618 yr Id give it 9/10. Once again an earth setting, but as Russel T. Davies has said, If your on an alien planet evry episode it becomes Far Fetched, Unrelistic even. With earth, you can compare and believe whats happening. Theres a certain relisticness to it. Story line was good, but their should of been a link in with the whole "Metabolis 5" eg: "Planet Of The Spiders" being John Pertwees last story, It featured giant spiders and an empress who was slightly obsessed with the whole "WORSHIP ME!!!" thing.... Effects were awsome, especially the Tardis chase. Which leads me on to a large rant. WHY WAS THE TARDIS FLYING????????? When on earth has the tardis done anything but Materialise and Dematerialise?? Once it dematerialises then in space it flies whilst spining. THis has been portrayed in many "Classic" series episodes, namely "The Horns Of Nimon" from december 1979, which was also one of the last storys to gain over 10 Million viewers. Secondly, In many episodes it has been stated that it is highly dangerous to open the tardis doors whilst in flight. The first time they were opened in flight was a story from 1964, "Planet Of Giants", the first story of season two following a month long break after the nearly year long season one. In this episode the tardis doors open whilst in flight and the crew are reduced to the height of One Inch. They land in present day England and discover a plot to sell a new insectocide- DN6 -on the market, what they then discover is that not only would it kill all insects, it would kill all those who use it. This episode was also Susan's - The Doctors Grand Daughter - penultimate story. The nest time the Doors were opened whilst in flight is in 1967's "Enemy OF The World" in which at the very end, the Doctors look-alike evil criminal Salamander enters the tardis and tries to use but does not close the doors, thus forcing him to be sucked out by the vacume of space. Another thing about the Runaway Bride is that the tardis literally took of at the end. This ceratainly has never happened in its 30 year history - If you count the origanal 26 years, then the tv movie in 1996, then the two new series, it equals 30 years feauring episodes - it has never done anything other then Dematerialise. But apart from all that, the episode was an all round enjoyable tale, and it was a perfect way of rounding of Christmas day, andit also followed a very good episode of eastenders. p.s: isnt my knowledge of doctor who good????
December 30, 200618 yr Apart from a bit of over-acting from Catherine Tate, (stick to comedy love) it was quite an enjoyable episode.
