March 29, 20232 yr Yeah, I was thinking 2pm on a Wednesday is a bit of a random time to drop a single  it is a bit of a meh song title but let's reserve judgment until we hear it!
March 29, 20232 yr So apparently it's their heaviest album yet in terms of guitars, and they're not expecting radio to play any of the singles! It's very much along the 'Radio:Active' vibe but heavier. The video for the single will also be out this Friday. Oh, and also Dougie sings more on this album than he's sung on any other album :D Edited March 29, 20232 yr by Mangø
March 30, 20232 yr Good that they’re finally giving Dougie some love and attention! I like his vocals!
March 30, 20232 yr The song is decent, but the lyrical content is exactly as you'd expect from the title lol.
March 30, 20232 yr Im really intrigued by the Niall Horan v Tom Grennan v McFly chart battle that will happen. Niall sold the least last time, but I expect him to improve whilst Tom and McFly will probably drop in sales slightly
March 30, 20232 yr It's tricky really. Although Tom hasn't had a big hit on this album, I feel as though he has a bigger fanbase this time around (he's certainly playing much bigger venues at least).
March 30, 20232 yr It's out and I'm liking it! Definitely the heaviest they've sounded on a single! The riff reminds me a bit of Arctic Monkeys for some reason, and I'm loving Danny's guitar solo too. Lyrics are a little cringey in places but it's still a banger! I doubt radio will go anywhere near it but it's so good to have them back :D
March 31, 20232 yr Author Hmmm. Just had my first listen and I'm a bit on the fence about it. It's OK, but it doesn't really pop in the same joyful way that "Happiness" did on the last album. Also, lyrically they kind of covered this territory on "One For The Radio". That for me was one of their best singles because it came at a time where they were so ignored by mainstream radio and basically delivered this rollicking anthemic belter that very cheekily said "Well as you won't play us, here's a song you won't play, despite the fact we're no different from the supposedly 'cooler' bands you're throwing your weight behind." Calling a song "Where Did All The Guitars Go?" also runs the risk of sounding a bit "This youth of today..." (strokes chins and tuts in manner of old man). Hopefully it clicks with a few repeat listens but so far it's not their best or their worst. Just sort of somewhere in between.
April 2, 20232 yr I really hoped to like it but it sounds so whiny Boomer! The instrumentation is great but I won't be returning to it with those self pitying lyrics...
April 3, 20232 yr Wow, this is way harder than they've been before indeed :o I like the music but the vocals are completely drowned out and the lyrics are a choice. Missed opportunity to properly nail going 'authentic rock' if the lyrics are corny as hell.
April 6, 20232 yr Author Just been reading this interview with Tom and Harry on Official Charts: https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/m...sations__38903/ I have to say I know not every artist is gonna be completely satisfied with their body of work, but in McFly's case it's exceptionally irritating when they do an album like "Young Dumb Thrills" - which I actually thought was their best record since Radio:ACTIVE - and then proceed to rubbish it at every turn and then Harry passes it off as "Oh that crazy thing we did in lockdown". Trouble is, and this has always been McFly's flaw, they can never just be comfortable and embracing doing what they're brilliant at for long, going on like it's 2005 and they're hard done by in the NME or some bullshit. Which is how we end up with albums like "Above The Noise".
April 6, 20232 yr I actually don’t mind Above The Noise but they really need to stop shitting over past material. It doesn’t make anyone certain that this is their “genuine” and that in three years time they’ll slag this new album off!

It's not a good look at all.
April 6, 20232 yr Author I agree with everything in this except Above the noise is actually really good. I don't get why they slag off their own material? It's not a good look at all. It's such shitty behaviour. It seems to be an almost frequent occurrence every time they bring out a new album. And it's insulting to the fans who've gone out and invested in it and by definition, them. As I said, it's one thing not being fond of say, a certain song or album in retrospect, in fact most artists all have one they're less fond of. Sophie Ellis-Bextor for example isn't keen on "I Won't Change You". Little Mix aren't fond of some of the songs on their first album. But they still seem so het up about certain things and how people perceive them, when they actually don't need to be.

I LOVE I won't change you!!!!   Yeah Jesy doesn't like Black Magic (wtf) Melanie C hates On the horizon (wtf) what is it with acts not liking the songs I like?
April 6, 20232 yr Author Bold of you to infer Jesy actually has taste though. Oh I wasn't saying anything about Jesy (and I'm with you there, because her choices since leaving the band have highlighted her inability to choose correctly). But like I know Perrie and Jade both don't like "We Are Who We Are" off the first album for example.
