Biography

j-hope

South Korean musician J-Hope is best known as a member of the K-pop boy band BTS. He made his official solo debut in 2018 with the Hope World mixtape. The next year, he scored a hit with his single "Chicken Noodle Soup" with Becky G. In 2022, he issued his first official solo album, Jack in the Box. Born Jung Ho-seok in Gwangju, he developed a love of dance at a young age, later delving into singing and rapping. He made his debut in BTS in 2013. The band went on to become one of the biggest K-pop acts of a generation, breaking into the U.S. market with their hip-hop-influenced dance sound. In 2018, Jung became the third BTS member to embark on a solo career with his debut mixtape, Hope World. In addition to becoming just the fifth Korean artist to chart on the Billboard 200 (following BoA, Taeyang, Jonghyun, and G-Dragon), he also became the highest-charting solo K-pop act on the Billboard 200 to date. Landing at number 63 on the main chart, Hope World also topped the World Albums chart. That same year, he hit number one on the Billboard 200 twice with BTS for Love Yourself: Tear and Love Yourself: Answer. In 2019, a duet with Becky G, "Chicken Noodle Soup," shot up the charts across the globe. Popularized with a social media dance challenge, the track topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart and even edged into the Hot 100. Meanwhile, activity with BTS continued into the 2020s, with more number one singles and albums pushing the group further into record-breaking territory. After the release of their 2022 compilation Proof, Hybe announced J-Hope's official solo debut album, Jack in the Box, which arrived that July. The same month, he became the first South Korean artist to headline a main stage at a major U.S. festival with his Lollapalooza debut. - Spotify

J. Cole

Raised on 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, and JAY-Z, J. Cole emerged in the 2010s as a kind of torchbearer for serious hip-hop. He takes on capital-T topics with an earnestness—and moral imperative—that most rappers seem to avoid. A North Carolina native (born in Frankfurt, West Germany, in 1985), Cole moved to New York City on scholarship to St. John’s University, graduating magna cum laude while making beats on the side, at one point waiting outside JAY-Z’s studio for three hours to give him a CD. Jay dismissed him initially, but circled back a year or so later on the strength of Cole’s mixtapes, making him the first signee to the Roc Nation label. Cole’s since gone on to release a string of ambitious, increasingly confident albums, often meditating on single subjects at length: 2018’s KOD, for example, offered a sustained look at addiction, while several songs on 2016’s 4 Your Eyez Only were written from the perspective of a friend killed in his early twenties after leaving the drug game—a composite of people Cole knew from childhood. Despite the gravity of his subjects (and his sobering delivery), Cole—like his occasional collaborator Kendrick Lamar—is the rare artist who's managed to reconcile the conscious with the commercial, balancing his conceptual side with giant singles like “Work Out,” “Deja Vu,” and “ATM.” - Apple Music

Biography

Solána Rowe had a weird time growing up. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the cops into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hard-headed, very curious.” It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts and what people think about my thoughts.” - Apple Music

Biography

Nathan Dawe

Nathan Dawe is fast-becoming one of the UK’s most talked-about new dance acts. Buoyed by a huge fan base in Birmingham and the Midlands, Nathan’s regional pull has seen him sell-out 3000-capacity headline shows in the city’s 02 Academy, as well as curate the first ever, one-day 0121 Fest in the summer of 2019. That pull is now starting to transmit nationwide, with Nathan’s single ‘Flowers’ ft. Birmingham rapper Jaykae – a fresh twist on the UK Garage classic — spending 11 weeks inside the UK Top 20, peaking at #12 earlier this summer. Nathan’s new single ‘Lighter’ ft. KSI went straight to #1 on iTunes on launch and the official video, which also features Window Kid, S-X and Lotto Boyz’s Ash, racked up over 3.5 million views in its first 48 hours – it’s already shaping up to be one of the records of 2020. Both singles follow Nathan’s first Atlantic Records singles ‘Cheatin’ and ‘Repeat After Me’ ft. Melissa Steel, both of which spotlighted his ability to write crisp, infectious dance music. - Spotify

Bru-C

“We are on a wave/Take over the place,” Bru-C raps on his 2019 single “You & I”, and while he’s ostensibly speaking to a new love, he could very well have been talking about himself and his producer Simula. After his scene-stealing appearance on Skepsis’ “Hold It Down” made him a leading voice in the UK’s jacked-up bassline scene, “You & I” pushed the Nottingham MC (born Josh Bruce in 1991) further overground, by hitching his deep, authoritative voice to a fleet-footed drum ‘n’ bass track that became his first breakthrough hit (and also helped him establish his own clubwear line, Krudd). Bru-C continued on a D’n’B tip with the equally frenetic 2021 single “Streetside”; however, lyrically, the song tapped into a more introspective side. Chronicling his hard-knock upbringing, Bru-C declares “music is my freedom”—and true to his word, he adapted the track into a melancholic acoustic ballad for promotional appearances, suggesting that freedom knows no bounds. - Apple Music

Biography

Jax Jones

When Duke Dumont topped the UK charts with his single “I Got U” in 2014, many listeners may have assumed that featured artist Jax Jones was the singer. In fact, Jones (born Timucin Aluo in 1987) was a co-writer and producer on the song, and its No. 1 position marked his auspicious debut. Raised in London by a Turkish father, a Malaysian mother and a Nigerian stepfather, the Apple Music Up Next alum grew up on a mix of American hip-hop, UK dance and African music, which might help to explain the mix of styles that swirls through his own tracks: His youthful fondness for Prince shows through in funk-infused cuts like 2015’s “Ocean Drive”, while Afro-Caribbean accents bubble up in 2018’s “Ring Ring”, a lilting tropical-house collaboration with Mabel and Rich the Kid. Though his beats generally follow the punchy cadence of deep-diving future house, he brings a hip-hop producer’s collage sensibility to the mixing desk: Many of his productions slyly interpolate other songs. “You Don’t Know Me”, from 2016, is built around the slinky hook of M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade’s 2005 anthem “Body Language”, while “I Got U” contains a choice bit of Whitney Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love”. Whether on his own productions or his remixes for Ellie Goulding, Charli XCX and Missy Elliott, Jones’ habitual blend of pop polish and house groove is unmistakable. “I just thought I'd try it,” he told Apple Music about his relationship to dance music. “House is a collage of everything the creator is. If you love hip-hop, you can chuck that in there. If you love rock, you can chuck that in there too. It took a long time, but now it makes a lot of sense. It’s sample-based and also musical, so it's a very natural fit. Life is beautiful like that. They say you have to, like, get rid of yourself to go to the next level. And I think that’s what happened.” - Apple Music

Calum Scott

Calum Scott honed his huge, honeyed pipes singing other people’s songs, but he didn’t fully find his voice until he began creating his own intimate pop vignettes. Born in 1988, in the Northern England city of Kingston upon Hull, Scott first took up the drums, while his sister Jade became the singer of the family. Eventually, Jade discovered her brother’s natural way with a fierce falsetto and chilling vibrato and signed him up for a local singing competition in 2013. He sang Paolo Nutini’s “Last Request” and won. Following that thrill of performing in front of a crowd, Scott joined Maroon 4, a Maroon 5 cover band, before tagging along with Jade at an audition for the ninth series of Britain’s Got Talent. There, with a stunning, slowed-down version of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own,” he blew away the judges, especially the notoriously scathing Simon Cowell, who pressed the “Golden Buzzer,” sending Scott directly to the live semifinals. Nerves got the better of him in the finals, and while he didn’t win, the singer used that exposure to launch his solo career and start writing material for his 2018 debut album, Only Human. Like his showstopping Robyn cover, Scott’s original songs are both poignant and empowering, especially the swaying, gospel-tinged celebration “You Are the Reason” and the piano-powered tearjerker “No Matter What,” a raw retelling of his experience coming out to his parents. Such personal tales bring out a sincerity and soulfulness that show Scott’s songwriting to be just as moving as his voice. - Apple Music

whistle is decent, but its jax's worst imo. love the eurodance style hes continuing with after where did you go, but that drop is really underwhelming imo
