One of many discoveries from the old josepvinaixa blog (this countdown is reminding me of just how much music I discovered from that place!), Lia Marie Johnson rose to fame as an internet personality on YouTube, appearing on channels such as Kids React and associated series. Moment Like You was her debut single, showing off her brilliant voice that could easily be compared to Ariana Grande over a dance-pop track that was love at first listen. It became my second BJSC top 10 hit back in 2015, scraping in at #10 to my delight! Lia has continued to release music in the years since, as well as branching out into acting, though I only heard one follow-up single, the lovely DNA.

One of the first things I did upon joining Buzzjack was create a thread for Lucie Silvas' then-upcoming third album Letters to Ghosts. Bear in mind, this was back in 2011, about a year before I joined BJSC. Nevertheless, by then, the album still hadn't materialised (5 years on from Lucie's second album), and I was keen to send one of my absolute favourite artists to the contest. I tried Reset in my first contest, but I'd been beaten to it (and spared an even worse result in the end), so I attempted Hide & Seek (a song Lucie had played live before, and its studio version/possibly a not-quite-finished demo was uploaded to Soundcloud with the expectation it'd be on the album) in my fourth go. It was my best result up until then, but that wasn't saying much...! Hide & Seek didn't feature on the tracklist of Letters to Ghosts when it finally arrived in 2015, and Lucie's released another album since, but has just given birth to twins with her husband John Osborne (of Brothers Osborne) so is naturally more focused on her family currently!

One of the weirdest and most hectic songs I've sent was by British singer and rapper Tanya Lacey back in early 2013. Tanya is best known for featuring on UK #2 hit How We Roll by Loick Essien in 2011, and had released her debut solo single that same year. Still yet to find my feet in the contest, I figured I had nothing to lose with this one! Too Many Cooks is nothing if not brash, and whether you love it or hate it, it's certainly not forgettable! It didn't win over the voterbase, DNQing, but Too Many Cooks was a solid hit in my chart and peaked at #2. Tanya charted a follow-up song, the beautiful Now That You're Gone (a BJFest entry of mine), and hit the UK top 40 again in 2014 on Matrix & Futurebound's Don't Look Back. She auditioned for The Voice UK in 2017, but has been quiet on the music front since. Too Many Cooks is one that's definitely held up for me in the years since - it's one my sister loves too so we always stan when it comes on shuffle during a car journey...!

Fun fact: we're now at a point where only two further artists remain who haven't scored any hits in my personal chart away from their BJSC song. Catey Shaw, however, is the highest placed lead artist who remains a one hit wonder for me. It's no real surprise, either. I hadn't enjoyed pretty much anything of Catey's, including the original version of The Ransom. Somehow, the Tommy Walker remix of it turns The Ransom into an infectious, euphoric dance bop streets ahead of its original version. It was a moderate BJSC hit, but it's one that's really held up for me in the years since - that drop is SO good! As mentioned at the start, I'd not been fussed with any other Catey songs, so naturally I've not sought out any of her other music, but Spotify tells me her most recent single was released in 2021.

It was our very own Oricon who sent Isac Elliot's New Way Home to me back in 2013 I'm sure, knowing it'd be right up my street. Isac was just 12 years old when he released that song, but it was an instant banger. Jáhq sent it to BJSC representing Bignia-Zaragovina, but I wanted Isac to be a TARO Bellamia artist at some point too. I think Jack and I actually had a mini disagreement over this one, but I got in quickly to secure it. Unfortunately, I ended up eating humble pie when Jack confirmed another song I was considering (Greyson Chance's Back on the Wall) and did better, as Worth Something DNQd. Oops. Obviously Isac got redemption later, more to come on that further down the line, but I still adore Worth Something and it stands up as one of Isac's best, so no regrets. Isac's brand of dance-pop was unstoppable around this time, with Worth Something forming part of his FAITH album (his best project IMO). Isac's currently on top form, scoring a consistent run of hits in his home country of Finland for the first time in his career (including two #1s), while he's achieved a top 10 in my chart every year since 2013 - a streak of 11 years.

Being a keen collaborator, there's a pretty big number of artists who have only made my chart in collaboration with Powfu, including a few that have more than one hit to their name. Sarcastic Sounds was once one of those artists, his first five hits over a twelve month period all coming with the Canadian lo-fi artist in tow. The tables have turned since then, though, with Sarcastic Sounds, a Canadian producer, singer and songwriter (real name Jeremy Fedryk) becoming an even more notable presence at the top of my personal chart than his friend. Following #1 hit say goodbye in mid-2021, he almost hit the top again with Song You'll Never Hear. The track features Sarcastic Sounds' own vocals over the chorus but pitched up, while Maisie Peters sings the chorus. The ambient track has top notch production and is one that really holds up for me, even if it wasn't very BJSC friendly and didn't make it past the semi-final. With Jeremy focusing more on songs with his own unfiltered vocals now, he released a #1 EP in my chart, and single ohfuckimnotok made my top 10 songs of 2022. His first full-length album has been completed and is due for release this year, and I can't wait!

I knew her already from Psycho which I really liked (and John Hughes Movie earlier which I liked but didn't love), Song You'll Never Hear remains my favourite though!

It felt great to be able to send one of my all-time favourite artists last year. My absolute favourite album is Kate Nash's Made of Bricks, a bold, brash debut filled with genius lyricism and hooks aplenty that defined about a year of my life, with it remaining not just a favourite of mine but also of my sister's. My interest in Kate remained mostly high (though third album Girl Talk tested it at times), and I finally saw a proper Kate live show in 2022 (previously I saw her play an intimate acoustic show for Banquet Records before meeting her at the signing!). Alongside many classics, Kate debuted a few new, unreleased tracks, with the most exciting one being this unexpected banger. Starting off with the piano, Wasteman builds into a dance-pop track with cutting lyrics that could only be found in a Kate Nash song. It became her second #1 in my personal chart and I figured it could get through the BJSC veto if she'd made it through not long before for D'yermak'er! Wasteman qualified and finished at a respectable 23rd. Kate's yet to release a new album, but with the quality she's been providing recently, it's bound to be another great one. (oh, and the music video's brilliant, one of the best of 2022)

There's a bit of a random story behind finding this one. Searching to see if an official artwork for Tom Odell's Grow Old With Me existed, Google Images brought up someone who looked absolutely nothing like Tom. I clicked out of curiosity to find it was German singer/songwriter Michael Schulte with a song called You Said You'd Grow Old With Me. I listened and it was really lovely, so checked out more of his stuff. It was another song, Jump Before We Fall, that really captured me, though. It hit #1 for two weeks in my personal chart, and I sent it to BJSC, where the love wasn't shared and it unfortunately DNQd, ending a then-personal best run of three consecutive qualifiers. Michael has gone on to be a consistent presence in my taste since then, with new single Waterfall becoming his highest charting song in my chart since 2014's Rock and Scissors just last week. Of course, Michael is best known for representing Germany in Eurovision 2018, where his song You Let Me Walk Alone finished fourth. His new album Remember Me (much delayed) is finally expected later this year!

Achieving a UK top 10 hit in 2014 with Oliver Heldens on Last All Night (Koala), KStewart was one of those artists I always kept in the back of my mind for a potential BJSC entry. Her solo music never blew up, but with a voice like that, I knew KStewart (real name Kate Stewart) had potential. Fast-forward to summer 2017 and I was checking through Spotify for some BJSC entries, and I find KStewart's song Hands. Immediately, I was addicted. It was super catchy and infectious, and it quickly gave her a second top 10 hit in my chart, peaking at #2 for two weeks behind the second and third weeks at the top for Louis Tomlinson's Back to You. The track also features Yungen, whose song Bestie was blowing up in the chart at that point. His rap is an essential part of the track, too, one of my favourite guest rap verses! It screamed BJSC entry, but this unfortunately has to be one of my most surprising DNQs. I still can't quite put my finger on what didn't click, but the song gets regular plays from me even now. KStewart's switched to using her full name in her music, and I've checked out one or two songs but wasn't super fussed. Her latest single, London Town, came out in November 2022.

Quick fact correction - I mistakenly said before that Catey Shaw was the highest placed lead artist to only score a single hit in my personal chart. I completely skimmed past this name, who I can confirm is definitely the correct artist for the criteria! It's hard to find much about Caroline Brooks online due to there being a real housewife of Dubai called Caroline Brooks, but narrowing the search reveals a little more. An American singer, Caroline formerly released music under the names BELL and BELLSAINT before branching out with her own full name. I found Parachute on josepvinaixa and loved it, and I was desperate to send it to BJSC. Guttingly, it DNQd. I didn't have expectations of it winning, but I definitely took its DNQ to heart and it's still one of the non-qualifiers that stings the most. Y'all did her dirty! Caroline has returned to the BELLSAINT name and is still releasing music under it, but she fell off my radar many years ago.

ooh now we're getting into a section with most of my faves: "The Ransom", "Moment Like You" (side note: so glad she's doing okay now), "Bimbo Doll", "Fade Out" and "Gold" (I heard this in the radio randomly like 10 years ago and it was the weirdest thing ever) in particular shine so bright in this crop

 

Have you really not heard any of the previous Ready Set songs before "Higher"?

I did like 'Wasteman' also.
