Having discovered Lewis Watson through a blog, I was already paying attention to his career by the time Stay came around. I really liked his acoustic pop style, with previous single Even If being his first top 10 hit in my chart not long before this dropped. Stay was the first single from Lewis' first full-length studio album at a time where it felt like he had a little hype building. After a couple of his EPs made the top 100 singles chart, his album made the UK top 40 at #28, but he did far better in my personal chart. Though it didn't quite make #1, Stay was a long-running #2 hit and the album was a comfortable #1, and I met him in release week at the album signing where he played a bunch of songs live, including Stay! I sent it to BJSC with little expectation of success but it turned into a cute hit, albeit not lighting up the scoreboard. Lewis' second album also hit #1 in my chart and spawned another top 10 hit, but I've paid less attention to him since as recent stuff hasn't grabbed me as much.

I've sent just two songs to BJSC that are entirely in a language other than English. Jakob Karlberg's Fan va bra featured lower down, but it's probably no surprise to those who know me that Ulrik Munther comes out on top out of the two of them. Swedish singer/songwriter Ulrik had two albums under his belt by the time this came about (I'll save the origin story for later), and for his third album, Ulrik experimented a little, composing the music while writer and novelist Jonas Gardell wrote the lyrics. The result was an album entirely in Ulrik's mother tongue for the first time in his career, and the music was still just as good. My favourite from the era was second single Nån gång (translation: Sometime). The track fought its way to #1 in my chart after a run of other big name songs kept it away for a few weeks, and I figured it could be a great BJSC entry. It fared much better than my first Ulrik entry, qualifying for the final (I remember following this result closely at a concert, oops. Since then I've sworn not to look at my phone while the artist is performing x). Ulrik's pivoted back to English-language music since but as an independent artist, the sound and vibe of this era seems to have most strongly influenced what has followed, including his fourth full-length album Put Your Self Out There in 2021.

After making a return to music with the excellent portraits album in 2019, it felt like Greyson Chance's third studio album era got off to a few false starts. A single, Boots, followed later in 2019, followed by Dancing Next to Me in 2020 which was easily my favourite of what turned out to be a run of interim singles in the end. Dancing Next to Me is boppier than much of portraits with such an infectious beat, it's no surprise that it's gone on to be one of my favourite Greyson songs. It made for a perfect BJSC entry, seeking redemption 8 years after I sent Greyson to my first ever BJSC contest and he DNQd, but I didn't anticipate it doing as well as it did. Dancing Next to Me finished 10th in the final, easily the best result for any Greyson song in the contest! A third album finally followed in 2022, and an EP before that in 2021, but Dancing Next to Me didn't feature on either unfortunately. Greyson remains on top form though, one of the most underrated artists of the last decade!

I've only ever been vetoed in BJSC once. I tried my luck with Alyssa Reid's Running Guns about a year after Alone Again hit the UK chart, and it had a little bit of Buzzjack interest so I couldn't really disagree with the veto but was definitely keen to try my luck. This was in BJSC 53, and I sent Tanya Lacey's Too Many Cooks instead (to the result of a DNQ oop). With drama building around the veto system and the ongoing need to build a points system that is more objective, the veto system was suspended for BJSC 54 so people could make a point if they needed to. I didn't really have a point to make, but I sent Running Guns again anyway...! It's a great song so I figured why not? Running Guns had already been a big #1 in my chart - it was Alyssa's first release since The Game era wrapped up so I was extremely hyped for it - and it did moderately in BJSC, qualifying but finishing low in the final. Of course, I sent Alyssa twice more, but this reigns supreme as my favourite of the three!

DVBBS and Powfu

Sent initially in BJSC 59 with Borgeous on Tsunami, the original version of what later became a UK #1 hit, DJ duo DVBBS are much like any DJ or producer who releases music as an artist first and foremost - inconsistent and varying depending on the vocals! Tsunami didn't make my top 40 in any form (though I didn't dislike it, I think it may well have been just outside on a couple of occasions), and they actually didn't chart at all for me until they teamed up with Cheat Codes in 2018. Johnny Orlando brought them to the top 10 a further three years later, but it was only a matter of months before they reached the top tier again with help from one of my current faves. One of the most prolific artists around, a Powfu dance track had me intrigued, and it didn't let me down. Losing Sleep came out at the end of a couple of weeks where I felt ill and extremely anxious, and it was a big distraction from everything I had going on. It hit #1 in my chart - Powfu's third, DVBBS' first - and I figured it could make a great BJSC entry a few months down the line when it was still going strong in my chart! It qualified, though didn't win like Mack's odds had it pegged as the favourite to do, and it felt like a redemption for Powfu who DNQd on his previous appearance. Powfu's latest EP topped my chart just a couple of weeks ago, and DVBBS scored a follow-up hit in 2022 with Cody Simpson on vocals for When the Lights Go Down.

The surprise result of CXLOE coming second resulted in unchartered territory for TARO Bellamia: a potential AQ. Two auto-qualifiers isn't a guarantee and only happens in the event of an even number of entries, so I couldn't bank on having one, but it was definitely a potential chance to send something a little less certain to smash. I wasn't really sure what to expect from the BJSC fortunes of Killing Butterflies. Lewis Blissett rose to fame on The Voice Kids UK, making it to the semi-final as part of Pixie Lott's team in 2017. His debut single Sick Thoughts came in 2019 and I was all over it, becoming a slow-burner in my chart. Next single Killing Butterflies made a much more instant impression, achieving three non-consecutive weeks at #1 and becoming one of my top 10 songs of 2019! It was hyped to do well in BJSC and is actually one of very few songs that could possibly have been called an underperformance of mine (perhaps it's time to start predicting bigger things of TARO Bellamia guys x). Lewis hasn't released any more music; his mother's health was poor through 2020 and they stopped posting on social media; apart from a couple of TikToks in 2021, Lewis hasn't posted publicly online since.

The story of discovering Ryan Lawrie is a bit of an unusual one. Ahead of their Summertime Ball in 2016, Capital FM posted an online vote to choose between two up-and-coming artists to give the opening slot of the show to. I heard Ryan's If Only the and instantly liked it! It was a top 10 hit in my chart, albeit a short-lived one. A couple of months later, watching The X Factor's auditions stage, I heard a Scottish singer introduce himself as Ryan Lawrie. A lightbulb went off in my head - I knew that name! Ryan had won the Summertime Ball vote and his X Factor audition was around the same time. This led me to revisit If Only and it took off properly in a big way, re-entering my chart at #1. I took a punt by entering it to BJSC at this point, while he was still competing in The X Factor, and it was a surprisingly modest hit when I didn't really expect much of its chance of success! After initially being sent home at bootcamp, Ryan returned as a wildcard at judges' houses on X Factor and made it to the live shows, finishing sixth ultimately. I met Ryan for the first time during the show and have met him a number of times since - he follows me on Twitter and Instagram and we DM each other occasionally! Musically, Ryan has released a few of his own singles (now under the name KOOLKID) and collaborated with many dance musicians, but most notably, Ryan has made a name for himself co-writing songs for huge K-Pop artists such as BTS (Mikrokosmos and Inner Child).

Redheads called Michael seem to be a recipe for success in my personal chart, but not so much in BJSC. I discovered Michael Aldag quite early in his career and had him on my radar for a little, but it wasn't until the release of this track that I really took notice. With a couple of minor top 40 hits under his belt, I was impressed by Teenage Drama from the start. Michael's vocal always stands out and it sounds really good over the soaring pop production of this track, which was love at first listen! The track became by far his biggest hit in my chart, peaking at #1 for two weeks, and I figured it was worth a shot in BJSC. Perhaps his voice was a little too divisive, because otherwise this is a super polished pop track that sounds hit-worthy to my ears. It was the start of what's been a consistent run of hits for Michael! I met him last summer at a small gig in London, and am seeing him live next month on his headline tour (and also now in 2 days as he's supporting Caity Baser on tour and I just got a ticket for that). New single girlfriends is my current personal chart #1, which is his first #1 since Teenage Drama!

I initially found Bea Miller on the second season of The X Factor US in 2012, the same season that gave us Fifth Harmony, though her ninth place finish on the show was just the start of Bea's career. Her debut album Not an Apology came three years later, peaking at #7 on the Billboard 200 with Fire n Gold becoming a Hot 100 hit. She remained on my radar after I enjoyed the album, but I didn't actually hear it's not u it's me upon release. I remember being at a gig - I was seeing Zak Abel at Roundhouse in London - and hearing a song I really liked. The beauty of Shazam which told me it was this! I quickly became obsessed. It became a long-runner in my personal chart, only just missing out on the #1 spot (to Dominic Fike's 3 Nights, a great song though a much less significant hit in the long run in my chart). After a year and a bit of mostly being on hiatus, I entered it's not u it's me to BJSC. It became my first qualifier in almost two years and finished very respectably in the top 20! It marked the start of what's been a near-permanent return to BJSC since, though that wasn't necessarily the plan at the time. it's not u it's me remains my favourite Bea song and she hasn't come close to its quality since, though I've enjoyed a number of songs, including recent single lonely bitch. Of course, featured artist 6LACK scored a big chart hit with Lil Tjay on Calling My Phone, and achieved a #1 in my chart with Rita Ora on the single mix of Only Want You.

Discovering Teen Wolf in 2017 was the start of something incredible for me. I found one of my favourite TV shows, which I've since attended conventions for, written fan-fiction about and created my own spin-off of that I continue to write. Froy Gutierrez featured in the second half of the show's sixth and final season playing Nolan Holloway, a scared teenager who is influenced by werewolf hunters. Though the character was mostly unlikeable (with a little redemption at the end), Froy played the role well and was absolutely easy on the eye, I can't lie here guys. Froy turned his hand to music in 2018, promising an EP, and the first single sideswipe dropped that summer. I loved it right away, with its moody vibe and catchy chorus making an earworm I couldn't resist. The song debuted at #1 in my personal chart and returned for two further stints (when he was confirmed to be attending the Teen Wolf convention I'd booked to go to, and then when the convention happened and I met Froy!) making a total of 5 weeks. I ended a six contest BJSC hiatus to send this, without any real expectation of success. Unfortunately it's one of my worst performing entries ever, but I still love it a lot! sideswipe was removed from Spotify before Froy released three more singles (all excellent), which themselves have also been deleted from Spotify. This is why I still download music, guys. I have trust issues. Froy went on to have a lead role in season 1 of anthology series Cruel Summer which aired in 2021.
