Biography

Calvin Harris

Talk about an unexpected career trajectory. In 2007, 23-year-old Calvin Harris released I Created Disco, a cheeky shot across dance music’s bow that presented him as Scotland’s brow-arched answer to LCD Soundsystem. Fast-forward a few years, and the scruffy fellow playing house-party host in the “Merrymaking at My Place” video is suddenly baring oil-slicked abs on Emporio Armani billboards. What happened, of course, is that Harris (born Adam Richard Wiles in 1984) traded up from the Amiga computer of his teens, developed some of the best studio chops in the business with deep-house rollers like 2013's “Thinking About You”, and helped spark EDM’s pop crossover with hits for Rihanna, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding and others. Along the way, he became one of the 2010s’ first DJ/producer/songwriter polymaths to earn top billing even on the songs in which he didn’t sing. No stranger to pyro-lit main stages—his percussive, synth-strafed 2014 single “C.U.B.A.” is big-room house at its most gargantuan—Harris has resisted getting boxed into any one sound. On 2017’s Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, he lays down a set of slinky R&B jams for Frank Ocean, Migos and Young Thug, while the 2018 singles “Promises”, with Sam Smith, and “One Kiss”, with Dua Lipa, proved just how versatile his vision of pop can be. - Apple Music

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding's breakthrough was nothing if not decisive. She rose to stardom in 2010 with her debut album, Lights, which earned the Critics’ Choice prize at the Brit Awards and led the BBC’s “Sound of…” poll. She’s only the second artist to win both in the same year, sharing the honour with none other than Adele. The Hereford-born singer started performing and composing as a young girl, influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush, then teamed with Lights producer Starsmith while still a student at the University of Kent. The collaboration helped elevate Goulding’s natural talents as a singer-songwriter, turning her into an electropop phenom as she blended acoustic guitars and dance-floor-ready beats on “Starry Eyes” and the Bjork-evoking “Under the Sheets”. Her biggest moment came in 2015 with “Love Me Like You Do”, the power ballad from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack that sold millions and cemented her as a world-class pop star. In addition to going platinum with her albums Halcyon and Delirium, Goulding’s versatility with genres and lyricism has made her an in-demand collaborator, working on “Return to Love” with classical tenor Andrea Bocelli, the club hit "I Need Your Love" with producer Calvin Harris and the 2019 break-up anthem "Hate Me" with Juice WRLD. What’s next for Goulding’s career? To quote the title of another of her 2012 hits, “anything could happen.” - Apple Music

Biography

If you want to see something sweet, have a look back at Niall Horan’s 2010 audition for the The X Factor. The swoop of bleached hair, the boyish jitters, the idea that he was gonna become the Irish Justin Bieber and it was all—going—to—start—today. Of course, things worked out a little differently, but if teaming up with a few other contestant runoffs and starting a group—One Direction—that went on to break Beatles-level records is your consolation prize, you probably came out okay. Not that Horan had a lot of time to think about it. “When it was happening, it was like we were in our own little bubble and everyone else was outside it,” he told Apple Music on the occasion of his second solo album, 2020’s Heartbreak Weather. “I didn’t realize the phenomenon. Like, apart from the fact that we played to 60,000 people every night.” Born in Westmeath, Ireland in 1993, Horan grew up listening to stuff like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young—influences not immediately apparent in One Direction but that surfaced in his solo career. His first album, 2017’s Flicker, didn’t cling to youth. If anything, Horan—like Ed Sheeran—proved himself one of those artists capable of riding the divide between a teenage audience and a decidedly adult one, crafting earnest, uplifting folk-pop with a slight modern shimmer. Heartbreak Weather took the sound a step further, incorporating soul, dance, and classic pop-rock. Not that he’s aiming for cool. If anything, what makes Horan appealing is that he feels more like an Everyman than a rockstar—the boy from around the way who made good. Good thing he didn’t win after all. - Apple Music

Biography

British belter Jess Glynne—born in London in 1989—got a powerful introduction into the pop world in 2014, when Clean Bandit's fizzy banger "Rather Be," which featured her on vocals, conquered the pop charts. But while listeners knew her sultry, soulful voice, she didn't fully reveal her artistry until the following year, when she released her debut, I Cry When I Laugh. "It was a really amazing transition to have a song do really well [while] keeping a bit of myself to me," Glynne told Apple Music. "It was kind of like leaving love behind and going off into… the unknown." That album established Glynne as a radio-ready diva who possessed a deep respect for soul music and a drive to inspire, with songs like the giddy "Ain't Got Far To Go" and the jubilant "Hold My Hand" retaining the ebullient vibe of her breakthrough hit while drawing from R&B influences. Glynne's 2018 follow-up Always in Between continued her quest to pep up the pop world, and songs like the deliberate "I'll Be There" and the groovy "Rollin" showcase her strong vibrato and unwavering spirit over vigorous beats. - Apple Music

Though Kushner seems to be pushing ahead so it'll be interesting to see if the signed CDs actually make a difference.

And 1975 breaking their run of #1 albums :nocheer:

I’m sure that’s why Polydor gave mass amounts to Banquet of the CD and Casssette to be sure they would all be shipped out in time, I’m guessing prior to RSD they were expecting an easy #1?

Does a live album really count? By that logic Taylor has ruined her streak of 9 consecutive #1 albums

People have differing views but for me it’s an album that’s made the album charts and their history will always be 1-1-1-1-1-2 for anyone looking it up, if it had reached #1 it would be claimed as their 6th chart topper so the fact that it didn’t and is a live album I don’t think it should be disregarded.
