Thought it might be good to have a thread here rather than in a genre forum as it's an opportunity to reminsce but also cover the second wave of this song. Thanks to TikTok, and a sped up version of the track, Santana's track 'Maria Maria' is receiving success on streaming services resulting in a re-entry into the UK singles chart on Friday at #51.

 

Now before anyone comes for me, I am well aware it was released in the US in 1999 (where it went to #1 in October), but it crossed over to the UK in the summer of 2000 and reached #6. The song itself is built around a couple of samples, but this also led to DJ Khaled (2017) and Tech It Deep (2022) interpolating the track into their own singles.

 

 

I swear that and 'Smooth' are the only ones people know to latch onto lol when there's a whole back catalogue of songs they could pick instead. Similarly with other artists too of course.

 

I actually don't mind the sped up version though tbh.

I can't decide if the current trend that insists every song must be "sped-up" and "chipmunked" is LAZY and ANNOYING. Or if I love that it gives random throwbacks like this or Miguel a second lease of life

Seems to be heading for the top 40 this week then. I had looked it up and realised it peaked at 10 and didn't have a long run but back in 2000 that was never the case lol.

It's just so random, this didn't even feel that massive at the time and I genuinely don't think I've even heard it since the year 2000 lol (although I am aware the album it's from was huuuuge that year)

 

Of all the hits from that year to get a revival.
